Garbage Excuse for a PDA!!! Pick it!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: JP Whoregan

OK, per a brilliant idea from ivwshane, here is the "worst excuse for a PDA" thread. Pick that PDA or "PDA-like" device that we hammer PDA plans on, that is just a glimmering gem of turd greatness!

My vote goes to the Palm Treo 750.

This is Windows Mobile. This is Windows Mobile on drugs. This is the Palm Treo 750.

Treo 750: Giving it the ol' "College Try" as a PDA!

edit: I was gonna pick either the Q, Duo, or the BJ, but at least those devices, I think, well.....they know deep down inside that they're garbage. They don't try to deceive you by pretending to wear the big boy pants like the Treo does.

Posted by: cingman66

You should have included the previous Treo models...600 and 650...now those were some turds! The 750 has actually been pretty good. Also, the HTC 3125 deserves mention...I owned one for about 3 months, and it almost turned me into an alcoholic. Honorable mention for the MVX-220. Jury is still out on the Duo, since I've only sold one of them, and the Q will probably never grace my walls.

I would vote, but that would be unfair to the other crappy phones listed. I am a HUGE WM fan, and I like my BlackBerries now that I have them set up to roxor soxors. God i'm a dork.

But all in all, if I had to pick one, it would probably have to go to the BlackJack, 2125 (which I'm glad died), or the 3125. WM Standard is CRAP! I LOVE my 8525 and my 8925!

I would limit the poll to current phones. If we do I vote for the pearl as the worst with the treo 750 being second.

The pearls mostly come back because of software issues and I get so many treo 750's back because the customer can't hear out of the ear piece.

The most reliable current pda phone is probably the curve. We sell a lot and get very few back.

Why all the hate on the bj and q? I have both devices and never had a problem so far. My bj I had since the day it came out and I never updated the software (same battery) and the ony real issue I started to have was the screen was starting to go. The q is awesome great battery life (compared to bj) fast speeds great reception opra browser already downloaded on the device. I would have to say the biggest pos is the treo's, people come in wanting them I try to steer them to away from them a week later "you sold me a pos", no you sold yourself a pos.

BlackBerry 8800/8820: Why isn't this one on the list? It's a giant phone for no reason. The 8820 has WiFi for no reason. Web pages load just as fast on EDGE as WiFi because RIM didn't want to put a processor with real power into it. Why they couldn't cram a 3G radio and a CPU to deal with it into this beast is beyond me. The keyboard is awful for such a big surface and I've had several 8800's charging ports just snap off and dangle uselessly in the port. And no camera either, not even a choice.

Blackberry Curve: Good keyboard, compact size, but why didn't they stick GPS in the first time around? Way to screw your loyal customers, RIM, and you think you're so much better than Apple. And the Titanium color is horrible, you should have kept it silver, at least the 8300 owners could pretend they didn't take it bending over.

Blackberry Pearl: 1) I hate the small keypad. 2) The keypad sucks 3) POS build quality that either breaks or requires replacement because it mysteriously disconnects permanently from BES servers. 4) The mushy keypad stinks.

BlackJack: Bargain PDA personified. Agonizingly slow processor, it takes 90 seconds to boot the damn thing. The keyboard is so awful it's beyond mention near polite company. The cursing and swearing reaches new heights when it comes to the battery. However, it's the only Samsung that doesn't totally suck at pulling a few bars.

BlackJack II: Shiny phone=fingerprints. Fingerprints+OCD=psychological episode. Keypad manages to be WORSE than the original Blackjack. At least the battery problem was fixed.

HTC 8525: Another on the list. Big, clunky and prone to returns. Knocking $100 off the price with the intro of the Tilt still hasn't cleared out stock. Still 100 times better than the 8125. So many people just wanted to cancel Cingular/AT&T forever after 6 months of dealing with the 8125, which is still better than the Nokia E62.

HTC Tilt: By the time the screen reorients itself when I open it, I could have walked to the person I was trying to email, wait for them to finish their conversation, and talk to them face to face. Yet, the GPS is phenomenal, the keyboard is spacious and the Tilting screen is good when composing long emails with the device laying on a flat surface.

Motorola Q9: A little big, and it's heavy for a plastic covered phone, but the keyboard is nice and spacious. Docs-To-Go and Opera Mobile, nevermind the Q-Packs, are an incredibly thoughtful addition that replace the pathetic Pocket IE and the unfinished Office Mobile. Main downside, it freezes for no apparent reason occasionally, and it lacks a touchscreen, both defects are manageable. What? There has to be at least one product we sell that I like.

Palm Treo: I just lump all of them together because they all have the same problems. Good keyboard, generally good (if dated) OS. Giant size, heavy weight, average reception at best, hardware WILL fail at some point during the phone's 2-year life. Chances are, if you walk out with a Treo you're either:

A) Too stupid to figure out Blackberry or Windows, because you've had a Palm Pilot since the Persian Gulf War.
B) You're too cheap to buy an iPhone or an HTC.
C) The company you work for is Reason A
D) You didn't know the $10 phone also has a calendar.
E) You're a masochist.

So all-in-all, the winner is...drumroll...

...drumroll continues...

The Nokia E62, yes the Nokia E62. It's been almost a year since this beauty passed from the scene, but we're still feeling her presence. With every disgruntled customer that comes back throwing the lethally heavy metal brick at you out frustration, you can thank the great Scandinavian people in Espoo for making the worst smartphone in the history of mankind. From taking an hour to load the 10 contacts in your address book, to the internet connection that reminds you of the days when AOL was the internet, and to that little joystick that made you question whether or not there is a God, the E62 has it all:

*An uncomfortable keyboard, with matching awkward softkeys.
*A Symbian OS that no US corporation supports
*Piss poor battery life, even for an EDGE phone
*an awkward SIM card slot
*an annoying-to-put-back-on battery cover
*the 5 inch width, the 12 inch length, and the 2 foot thickness.
*A shatterable glass screen

Yes, the Grand Prize goes to the E62. The winner of the Grand Prize wins a trip to an industrial design school, slap to the face and, a pocket fisherman and a pink slip.

Thanks for playing.

Yes, the E62, with it's 10 minute turnaround time on an SMS, is possibly the biggest turd ever to grace a Cingular phone wall...

I was just trying to stick with current turds, because if I was to start back-listing previous turds, we'd have **** all over the walls.

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

Okay, fine, I'll pick the Treo as runner up.

I would like to see a "worst phone of all time" thread. That would make it far more amusing. Even today, there's only a couple of crappy phones, and most of these crappy phones aren't very popular.

Posted by: magick21

Gotta go with either the Treo 650 or the motorola Q, both unfortunate pieces of feces.

Posted by: JP Whoregan

So more than 40 votes, and it looks like a neck and neck race between the Treo 750, the Blackjack, the Q, and the Duo for the Biggest Turd Award! (I added up the last 3 voting blocks, and it adds up to 14 votes)...

Congrats to Motorola and Pantech for fantastic Turd production!!!

It looks as though Motorola might win the crown in both the crappy phone AND turd PDA threads!!!! What an achievement!!!!

All I see is a 3 way between the BJ, the Duo, and the Treo. And the poll itself is highly flawed. Why isn't the 680 or 8800 included? The Tilt? With the sound quality issues of that device, it should be up there. Also, why limit the IDK choice to the Duo or the Q? The Duo I can get, it's a Pantech and probably has issues, I can't figure out why the Q would be lumped with it. Is it just WM6 Standard? Is the Q too wide for your tastes? MicroUSB?

I still don't see why the 8820 should be on there...it seems like you hate every PDA phone. The Curve seems to be in favor, because you never really said anything negative about the phone.

There is no WAY the 8820 is a garbage excuse for a PDA. The form factor might not be in your favor, but the Blackberry OS alone makes it legit.

And the Tilt? How is this a garbage excuse? This phone has many features that some people NEED...and no other phone efficiently provides it.

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

Okay, the 8800 was good back in the day. Full keyboard+GPS, nice. However, the Curve came out at a c-bill less, still with full keyboard, and it should have had GPS as well. Now that the 8310 is out, the 8800 is utterly obsolete. Adding WiFi is like putting gas in a car you already wrecked. It should have been retired and it really doesn't sell.

As for the Tilt, I do like it, but I think it should still be a choice for the people that don't like it. It does have a poor speakerphone, and to some people that's a deal breaker. Would that stop me from using a Tilt? Nope. Would that stop someone else? Yes, and it does. Option, please.

Honestly, I like most of our PDA's, but that's not the point of the thread, now is it? This thread exists to highlight and rank the rankest smartphones. So I'm busting out the hateraide, zip it and have a sip, relax and let it go.

IMO any HTC/AT&T/Cingular PDA is junk. WM, shoddy build, hardware issues. No idea why people buy these.

Posted by: didefresh2006

The blackjack is the biggest piece of junk ever. It doesn't hold a signal.

I do like my blackberry curve, but they should give us some form of adapter for the gps for those who paid the full $299 or give us a free upgrade to the 8310. As for the platinum color, it's cool, but I bleed crimson so i'd have to have the crimson colored.

The q looks good to me, but I like that in 2008 you can get blackberry connect on this phone, so bb users won't be held to a bb...they can get a q.

Dude, that's some funny *****. And entirely true!

I have to agree with almost all of your evaluations...although I think the Curve (8310) is an excellent phone/PDA. The 8800/8820 is basically obsolete now...and even when it was the only GPS BB, how many did you actually sell...maybe 2? All WM phones seem to share that same crappy, slow processor...and God forbid you actually download something onto it (like a game or business application)--they get even slower and freeze up every other time you use them. My 3125 almost drove me to tears.

One other aspect to consider when choosing a PDA/Smartphone--Support. RIM provides (IMO) the BEST all-around support of their devices. We can ALWAYS get in touch with our RIM rep and he always knows how to fix any problem we've run into. Now if I can just get him to comp me an 8310 to replace the 8300 I bought in July.....

Looks like I just put the Blackjack ahead.

Can't wait until I get a 8525 instead.
