:: GUIDE :: Revised Lean n' Mean 1.1.2 Unlocking MACHINE!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Drakkhen

Hi guys, first of all I want to say thanks to anyone's who's contributed any kind of positive and helpful information in this forum. It because of you, this guide and many others like it exist.

Secondly, a few days ago, I posted a guide called 'Milestone Methods to Upgrade to 1.1.2'. It was lengthy, but detailed and I have recieved some good feedback on it. However, a few users have come across some problems, particularly when trying to jailbreak their 1.1.1 phones. This got me thinking, and eventually trying different things to duplicate and resolve the issues that they are having...

...And eventually, the result is *THIS* guide, which should be much easier to follow and understand. The steps have changed, but I'll try to use the same milestone-based format of my previous post. So, if you're stuck somewhere along the road to 1.1.2, I REALLY hope this will solve your problem.
Again, this will not work for brand new 1.1.2 phones w/ the new bootloader, so those readers beware!

***

BNIB – Brand New In Box

(HOME) button – The round button on the front of your iPhone

[SLEEP] button – The long button along the top of your iPhone

DFU Mode - You don't need to know what it stands for; you just need to know how to get there. Hold down the [SLEEP] and (HOME) button until your iPhone disconnects from your computer. I know, some people say "10 seconds" or whatever, but the BEST way to do this is to turn on your speakers and listen for the device to disconnect from the USB interface. When you hear this, let go of the [SLEEP] button, but KEEP ON HOLDING the (HOME) button until you hear the device connect again.

** Please note that while in DFU mode, you SHOULD NOT see anything on your screen. If you see a yellow triangle (1.0.2), an iPod cable (1.1.1) or a picture of your mom, you ARE NOT in DFU mode.

Jailbreak – Alters the iPhone’s file system to allow writing and modifying data in specific areas. In turn, this allows 3rd party applications to be installed.

Unlock – Let’s a SIM other than AT&T operate as a cellular device in any given GSM provider. Note that when you’re at the “slide to unlock” screen on your iPhone, which is not the same ‘unlock’.

Activation – Pairs the SIM card with the phone, and for all practical purposes lets the user access the springboard (home screen)

Firmware – This is the OS of the iPhone. Current popular versions are 1.0.2, 1.1.1, and 1.1.2

Baseband – The component of the iPhone that handles all the communication aspects of the the iPhone

* Upgrading / Downgrading - When upgrading your firmware, the baseband upgrades alongside the firmware. If you are at 1.1.1 with its corresponding baseband 4.01 and you upgrade to 1.1.2, you will also upgrade your baseband to 4.02. ** Unlike upgrading, when you DOWNGRADE firmware, the baseband does NOT tag along. Instead, the baseband will stay the newest version. If you downgrade to 1.0.2 from 1.1.2 using DFU mode, you will still have the 1.1.2 baseband on your phone. This is not a bad thing. It just needs the user to BE AWARE OF THIS FACT, as it is also quite important to be comfortable with this idea.
As mentioned above, each firmware revision has its own corresponding baseband:

1.0.2 -> 3.14
1.1.1 -> 4.01
1.1.2 -> 4.02

Please note that it is possible and essential that you understand that you can have firmware 1.0.2 with baseband 4.02 on your phone by merely restoring from 1.1.2 to 1.0.2.
Virginizing – returning the phone to 1.0.2 with baseband 3.14. This is done via scripts, and there are many out there – some require minimal user input while other are more involved. I am mentioning this only because some people have this misconception that downgrading the FW is the same as virginizing, which is not the case. When someone says “I virginized it”, it means (for all practical purposes of this guide) they downgraded the firmware AND they downgraded the baseband.

***

Files - You'll need these files in this guide; nothing more, nothing less:

Files:
You’ll need these files, nothing more, nothing less...
1) 1.0.2 firmware

2) AppTappInstaller (Windows EXE file that installs AppTapp on 1.0.2 iPhones)

3) wiNstaller (Tool to jailbreak, unlock and install applications on 1.0.2 iPhones)

5) WinSCP (Windows SSH Client)

6) Jailbreak Package

You should also be running iTunes 7.5

***

Now that we have the formalities over and done with, let’s move on to preparing the phone for its upgrade to 1.1.2.
I am using this concept of milestones to emphasize the importance of WHY we are doing things. My desired result is not only an unlocked iPhone at 1.1.2, but also your understanding of why you are at where you are at any given point in time.
So, without any further ado, here is my 'Lean and Mean Milestone Methods to 1.1.2'

***

Milestones:

** If you've had a look at my previous guide, this is a much shorter list of target criteria than before. Anyhow, here are the steps to get to the first milestone:

[MILESTONE 1] To unlock 4.02 Baseband, we need to get it on the phone. This milestone focuses on nothing more than to get your phone to a clean state with the 4.02 baseband. This milestone will also get EVER SINGLE READER to the EXACT SAME PLACE on their phone.

[MILESTONE 1 COMPLETE]

***

[MILESTONE 2] Milestone 2 requires some work. It describes your phone as being Activated, Jailbroken and unlocked with the 4.02 baseband. Here is where we differ a bit from the previous guide: We will also prep for an update to 1.1.2 while in 1.0.2.

a) DFU (refer to definitions above) and connect the iPhone to iTunes.
b) Restore using [SHIFT] key + ‘Restore’ and select the previously downloaded 1.02 firmware. You WILL receive an error 1013 after the restore – this is perfectly normal. Now, DFU and restore AGAIN (on every phone I’ve done, it’s taken me 2 restores to get the desired effect)
c) Use AppTappInstaller.exe to kick your phone out of restore mode
d) If iTunes is not running, start it up and then use wiNstaller and [ACTIVATE] the phone.
e) Use AppTappInsatller.exe again to install AppTapp Installer
f) Update Installer
g) Exit Installer, Connect to WiFi and set Autolock to [NEVER]
h) Install ‘Community Services’, ‘BSD Subsystem’ and ‘OpenSSH’ (NOTE: These are installed ON YOUR iPHONE, and not in Windows. Community Services, which is located in the 'Sources' category, just let's you 'see' OpenSSH, BSD Subsystem is a prerequisite for OpenSSH, and OpenSSH itself is a secure FTP server that lets you copy files between your iPhone and your PC). Both OpenSSH and BSD are located in the 'System' category.
i) Run WinSCP (You downloaded this earlier) and connect to your iPhone’s IP address (Either find it on your iPhone interface through SETTINGS->WIFI->(blue arrow on the right) or, go to your local router interface and find your iphone via it's MAC address - if you have no idea what I just said, use the first method! )
j) Unzip the AnySIM 1.2.1u archive file onto your desktop, and name the folder that it creates to 'anySIM.app'. Drag the folder into the /Applications folder on your iPhone using winSCP. Drill into the anySIM.app folder and select all the files. Right-Click and select ‘Properties’ Change the permissions on the file (top right hand corner in the pop-up window) to enable ‘execution’, or simply type in 0755 in the box below the checkboxes)
k) Run AnySIM by tapping on the icon, and sliding the bar across the screen.
l) Go back into Installer, and look for the "Tweaks 1.1.1" Category. Inside, you will find Oktoprep. Install Oktoprep and exit Installer.

[MILESTONE 2 COMPLETE]

***

[MILESTONE 3] The big difference here compared to other upgrade guides (and it is big, as I've just saved you at least 20 - 30 minutes), is that you will not touch FW 1.1.1 at all. So far we have:

1) Unlocked the baseband - CHECK!
2) Prepared for upgrade - CHECK!

So, the last step is to upgrade to 1.1.2 to jailbreak and activate that mofo!

a) Upgrade to firmware 1.1.2 using iTunes. DO NOT use the ‘Restore’, as it will undo the Oktoprep, and you’ll basically have to start over.
b) Run the Jailbreak package software (In windows, just double-click the batch file). You do not need to install SSH, as you can install it manually via installer if you need it later. Please note that you’ll need Java runtime (http://www.java.com) for this jailbreak to work. After the phone reboots, it will automatically reboot again. You should be able to access your springboard along with the Installer application.

Congrats, you are now the owner of the same iPhone you had before, but with newer software!!!!

[MILESTONE 3 COMPLETE]

***

I hope this helps out the individuals who are stuck trying to get jailbreakme.com to work (I'm sure it will, since we don't even touch 1.1.1 here), and I hope it also let's 1.0.2 users who are hesitant to upgrade make a better decision, as the process is no longer dependant on jumping between 3 different firmware revisions.

Thanks for you patients guys, and I'm REALLY, REALLY sorry for typing so much...REALLY!

Best,

Larry

I think Im going to try it out !

Posted by: latrapeze

Milestone refers to the status of the phone when you start the process? ie: if I fit the criteria for Milestone 3, I skip the first two Milestones and go directly to Milestone 3?
This is an awesome guide by the way.

Posted by: BornInBremen

You should put this in the Wiki so you can update it as needed.

edit: Noticed something...when you SSH into the iPhone, people might not know the username and password. On 1.1.1 (what I have), it's:

username: root
password: alpine

I seem to recall 1.0.2 and 1.1.2 might have different passwords for SSH, but I could be wrong on that. Should specify it in the instructions.

Posted by: BringIt

Hey Drakkhen,

I just followed the guide and updated my phone. It took me about an hour, but went through smoothly.

I couldn't resist.. having spent 2 days trying version 1 and 2 of your guide :P
I noticed you revised the guide again so I had to give it another shot.

Thanks!

very detailed guide but if i want to up to 1.1.2 and i have unlocked 1.1.1, should i follow milestone 3 ?

plz let me know what process should i do. thx.

Actually, becase this guide never really touches 1.1.1, the password is always dottie, but that's a fantastic point! Unfortunately, I can't edit the post anymore

You need to achieve all 3 milestones. If you're phone is already 1.1.1 unlocked it says:

If you are on firmware 1.1.1 and unlocked, just upgrade your phone to 1.1.2

After you upgrade to 1.1.2, Milestone 1 is achieved.. then you go onto achieve Milestone 2.. then 3

Exactly - if you fit a criterial, you are there already!!! Milestone 3 is hard to 'start off from, 'cause you'd be pretty much be done already and wouldn't need a guide if your phone matches milestone 3.

Basically, instructions on how to reach the objective follow what the objective is.

Goldsaint, milestone 3 requires an activated/jailbroken FW. This, requires that the phone be prepped for jailbreaking from a lower firmware. The milestone also requires that baseband 4.02 be unlocked, which requries 4.02 to be on the phone. This, in turn, require an unlocking program be installed on the phone, which requires a jailbroken firmware. This is why we need to go to 1.0.2, and also why we FIRST need to install 1.1.2 before anything.

If you phone is at 1.1.1 and unlocked, update to 1.1.2, and try to get to milestone 1 first.

Oddly enough, on 1.1.1, my password is "alpine", not dottie.

See, the WiKi is a better place so you can update it as needed.

Posted by: Drakkhen

I think we are agreeing on the same thing...or something like that.

1.0.2 - dottie
1.1.1 - alpine

This guide never asks you to downgrade / upgrade to 1.1.1. You only use WinSCP to SSH to your phone once to install and configure AnySIM. This is always done in 1.0.2, so the password will always be 'dottie'. The other password will come into effect after you've upgraded to 1.1.2 and want to connect to your phone via SSH.

hi Darkkhen, very nice guide...i'm about to try it. 1 question
you say:

"If you are on firmware 1.1.1 and unlocked, just upgrade your phone to 1.1.2"

do i just upgrade via itunes 7.5? or do i need to install Oktaprep from Tweaks 1.1.1 before i start?

thanks for any help

Posted by: maximumsport

Great guide so this basically eliminates the whole restore to 1.1.1 part, nice. I'll keep this in mind for the next phone I upgrade.

Posted by: DerekMartin

I don't seem to have a /applications folder on my phone. Where do I find this???

Posted by: MacGeek15

Trying this method right now Drakkhen haha
If it works, I just saved 20 whole minutes!

Everything thats on this guide I been telling people to do for days just never wrote a guide. Because the Dev team jailbreak is good but I was looking at the lockdownd file and it isnt patched that well as iPatcher does a better job.

Hi weapon,

You do not have to install or run anything on you iPhone when you're starting off with an unlocked 1.1.1 unit. All the prep and installation will be when you're in 1.0.2 (THIS INCLUDES the Oktoprep )

You should upgrade to iTunes 7.5 on your computer before you start though.

Hey Drakkhen where do I find the applications folder on the iphone to put anysim in it?? when I access the phone via ssh I can't find the folder.

when you first connect to your iPhone using SSH, you are not in the root directory (even though it's named 'root'). You need to go to the physical root, so go up two levels on the file explorer in winSCP, and you'll see Applications...

Thank you Darkkhen

Got this sucka unlocked and working. Thanks for the guide, drakkhen, much appreciated. One more question, edge and youtube not working. It says can't connect to edge/I am not subscribed.

Posted by: DerekMartin

After I slide to unlock it goes to the credits. Does that mean it is done, or do I wait.

Posted by: Drakkhen

No, scroll down to the bottom, and you'll see a red button...tap that once...

Posted by: DerekMartin

Wow, how did I miss that GIANT arrow pointing down. Thanks again

For Edge, you need to input your edge settings from your carrier - find that, and you can enter them under SETTINGS->GENERAL->NETWORK

As for YouTube, do the following:

Run Installer and go to the 'Sources' section
Tap 'EDIT'
'Add' http://markmon.mine.nu:90/iphone/repo/repo.plist as a source
Refresh the source
Go to the 'Install' section and scroll down to the bottom. You will now see a category called 'Unlock That iPhone'
Find and install the YouTube fix

Cheers,

When I run the 1.1.2 jailbreak batch file I get an error. I am redownloading the file and I will try again.

Posted by: DerekMartin

an unrecoverable error was encountered, see console for details.

In the console it says that it cannot launch iPhuc!

Do I need to install iPhuc for this to work????

Posted by: Drakkhen

Make sure you have Java installed - the package should've come with iPhuc process within the .jar file.

Posted by: DerekMartin

I went to the java page and when I click to check it says that it is installed.

Posted by: Gamezilla

Ok, I followed exactly everything in your guide down to the last step, and everything is perfectly fine EXCEPT for one thing, my imei is corrupt, and in turn I am getting thr invalid sim error.

How can I restore my imei, could you please help me, thanks

This is the error that I receive when trying to run the jailbreak.

You didn't follow everything exactly down to the last step. In fact, you probably missed / ignored a vital step in Milestone 1, where it states:

I'm going to guess you were upgrading from 1.0.2, and was either unlocked under AnySIM 1.02 or some iteration like iUnlock.

You need to downgrade your baseband, re-virginize, and then start the process over once you are sure your phone is no AnySIM unlocked anymore

I'm not sure this is a problem with the phone - more like the computer :/

well now that i got this far, and spent countless hours doing this, isn't there ANYTHING that could be done to just restore the imei?

I found a method on another forum that says to upload the "Unlock.app" folder, and then run it for 20 mins, and that should fix the imei and restore it back to its original state.

The only problem is, I dont know if the Unlock.app will mess with any thing else thats been set up

Posted by: Drakkhen

You can try it, but I'm almost certain that you'd be wasting more countless hours. The best thing to do right now is to downgrade your baseband and virginize to get your IMEI back and start the process again.

This whole upgrading to 1.1.2 should take under 45 mins if you have all the prequesites...

L.

Posted by: GeeK.dLL

Remember if you unlock 1.1.2 baseband v4.2 then You will want to install iWorld from Installer after you update (found in Tweaks 1.1.2) in order to fix a known 1.1.2 crash caused with Unsupported Carriers.

a couple of questions before i start...

b) Restore using [SHIFT] key + ‘Restore’ and select the previously downloaded 1.02 firmware. You WILL receive an error 1013 after the restore – this is perfectly normal. Now, DFU and restore AGAIN (on every phone I’ve done, it’s taken me 2 restores to get the desired effect)

what is the desired effect we are looking for?

c) Use AppTappInstaller.exe to kick your phone out of restore mode

do i just click on the AppTappInstaller icon and will that kick me out of the restore mode?

d) If iTunes is not running, start it up and then use wiNstaller and [ACTIVATE] the phone.

i dont see anything just called "ACTIVATE" in the unzipped wiNstaller folder, do i just click on the "wiNstaller" icon?

sorry for the noob questions but i would rather know what i'm doing before i start.

Posted by: DerekMartin

Once again Drakkhen, you where right. I tried it on my brothers laptop and it seems to be working.

Posted by: weapon xxx

well i'm going to start and hope someone can address my questions from above

Posted by: DerekMartin

and success. Finally unlocked under 1.1.2 Thanks Guys for all your help

WiNstaller (activation) doesn't seem to like it when you just DFU once, and run AppTappInstaller.exe to kick the phone out of restore mode.

After the 2nd DFU, WiNstaller activation will be successful. I know it's weird and flaky, but welcome to my world of trial and error!

To Kick your phone out of restore mode, click AppTappInstaller.exe, and select firmware 1.02 - it will run and fail, but you will see the activation screen on your phone.

You want to run 'winstallerGUI.exe"

ok, so here's where I'm at right now:

I did what you said about starting the process over to virginize my phone, and I'm now on 1.0.2 with the 3.14 baseband.

My imei is still corrupt, I was following this guide: http://www.modmyifone.com/forums/sh...+baseband+1.1.1

I finished phase 2, and did not proceed to phase 2.5 yet.

Is there anything that I should know if before I proceed?

Posted by: Drakkhen

Is your phone locked or unlocked right now? (I'm assuming the 0049 IMEI would indicate that you can't use it to make calls.)

You should still be able to Jailbreak and activate it though, right?

Now, install BSD and SSH -
Find the old anySIM (1.02), download and install it (WinSCP)
Run anySIM, and you should get your old IMEI back.

However, at this point you are anySIM unlocked, so you have to virginize again - after you virginize this time, your IMEI should stick.

holy cow, are you sure thats gonna work?

what made the imei go away before?

How can I prevent it from going away again?

1.0.2 -> 3.14
1.1.1 -> 4.01
1.1.2 -> 4.02

Files - You'll need these files in this guide; nothing more, nothing less:

Files:
You’ll need these files, nothing more, nothing less...
1) 1.0.2 firmware
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite...28_Restore.ipsw
2) AppTappInstaller (Windows EXE file that installs AppTapp on 1.0.2 iPhones)
http://www.nullriver.com/~adam/AppTappInstaller.exe

***

Milestones:
  • Milestone 1 - iPhone @ 1.1.2 Firmware, 4.02 Baseband, Not Activated, Not Jailbroken, Locked
  • Milestone 2 - iPhone @ 1.0.2 Firmware, 4.02 Baseband, Activated, Jailbroken, Unlocked
  • Milestone 3 - iPhone @ 1.1.2 Firmware, 4.02 Baseband, Activated, Jailbroken, Unlocked

  • If you are on firmware 1.1.1 and unlocked, just upgrade your phone to 1.1.2
  • If you are on firmware 1.0.2 and unlocked w/ ISPF or AnySIM 1.1, you may also just upgrade your phone
  • If you are on firmware 1.0.2 and unlocked w/ AnySIM 1.02 or earlier, you MUST virginize your phone before returning to this guide.
  • If you are NOT unlocked (a virgin) or just want to jailbreak your AT&T unlocked phone, you may upgrade to 1.1.2

Best,

Larry

Excellent work! Thank you for taking the time.

TRUST ME - nobody ever tusts me

Ok - when anysim 1.02 was the newest thing, everyone had it on their phone - They all had IMEI's that were fine. It was the UPGRADE to 1.1.1 that made the IMEI's bad.

Install AnySIM (at this point you should have an unlocked 1.0.2 phone)
Virginize (this will kill the anySIM unlock, but keep your IMEI)
DFU Restore (1.02)

Then aim for Milestone 1

TRUST ME...

Quick question for you guys who have updated to 1.1.2.
Will i be able to change my edge network settings the same way as in 1.1.1?
Or is there something special I need to do as well?

Yes, the edge settings in 1.1.2 are located in the same place as before.

You SHOULD be getting that. If you see a yellow triangle, then you are back on 1.0.2. The error just means that it cannot restore the baseband, which is what you want anyway.

ERROR (1) - This is usually resolved by rebooting your computer. You will also get this message if you try to restore your firmware without using DFU mode.

ERROR (1013) - Cannot restore baseband to 3.14. This happens when you are downgrading your firmware from 1.1.2 to 1.0.2. Like I mentioned in the guide, the baseband will not follow the firmware when downgrading, so you get this error. It is normal and essential that you get this error in order for you to continue.

ERROR (1015) - Cannot restore baseband to 3.14. This happens when you are upgrading your firmware from 1.0.2 to 1.1.1, but have FW 4.02 on your phone. Again, this is because you are essentially trying to downgrade the 4.02 firmware of 1.1.2, to the 4.01 firmware of 1.1.1

ERROR (1604) - SIM Problem of some sort - Pop out your SIM and reboot your phone, and try the restore again. Thanks to BringIt for unvoluntarily volunteering to be guinnea pig and for being resourceful!

Hope this helps!

I understand this now, the desired effect is this error.

However when I run next step of AppTapinstaller, it starts off by re-downloading 1.0.2 to re-install this firmware. Is this right??

Posted by: Drakkhen

Yes..the first time you run apptapp installer, it'll download the firmware...

No problem! Delete the iTunesMobileDevice.dll in your wiNstaller directory, and replace with this one...It's just a version conflict

This is after you press the red button? Try DFU restoring to 1.0.2 again, and make sure you rename the folder to anySIM.app before you copy it over.

no clue what the froze activation screen is - I've never seen it before ;\

Posted by: weapon xxx

lucky me i guess...lol, so can i get back to an unlocked 1.1.1 iphone?

Posted by: Drakkhen

well, you have to downgrade the bb to 3.14 and the upgrade to 1.1.1 then jailbreak.

Posted by: jeffd

Thanks for the guide everyone, it worked like a charm. The only snag I had was the the wiNstaller linked to had the wrong itunes.dll bundled with it. I just used a older one and all was fine.

Good work guys!

Posted by: weapon xxx

ok i got it unfrozen...but its not jailbroken. when i use the slidder it just goes to the emergency call screen...any tips?

Posted by: weapon xxx

i'm getting there...ok this is what i've done so far:
j) Unzip the AnySIM 1.2.1u archive file onto your desktop, and name the folder that it creates to 'anySIM.app'. Drag the folder into the /Applications folder on your iPhone using winSCP. Drill into the anySIM.app folder and select all the files. Right-Click and select ‘Properties’ Change the permissions on the file (top right hand corner in the pop-up window) to enable ‘execution’, or simply type in 0755 in the box below the checkboxes)

ok now the problem i have is

k) Run AnySIM by tapping on the icon, and sliding the bar across the screen.

where is the icon? and slide what bar across what screen?

do you mean anysim from the installer screen?

The icon should be on the iphone homescreen, if anySIM was transferred to the phone properly. When you click on the icon, just follow the instructions. Read each step carefully. Don't forget to reboot the iphone after transferring anySIM.

Posted by: weapon xxx

thanks for your repley...i guess i need to reinstall it as i dont have the icon on my home screen.

Posted by: jeffd

Reboot the phone to get the anysim to show.

You will then see the icon and then the slider

i have a question... what's the point in downgrading to 1.0.2 again? is it so you can upload anysim 1.2u to it? if so can't this be done instead, assuming you already unlocked and jailbroken 1.1.1

okprep 1.1.1 upgrade to 1.1.2 jailbreak 1.1.2 and add this source to installer

http://modmyifone.com/wiki/index.ph...one_from_Finder

( you can find the source in the link above ) once added download anysim 1.2u via installer and unlock your phone in 1.1.2

i haven't tried it but im wondering, wouldn't that work too? i just don't know whats the point in restoring all the way back to 1.0.2

In order to keep things simple, my main goal to this guide is to get everyone (no matter what state your phone is in) to the same place as early as possible. Otherwise, I end up writing x number of guides for x number of situations.

If you are in a position to run anySIM 1.2.1u and Oktoprep on your 1.1.1 unlocked phone, perfect; as I'm almost certain that it's possible.

The other reason I'm doing it this way, is that I feel that upgrading from a 1.0.2 with nothing on it results in a much cleaner 1.1.2 install.

Either way, if it works for ya, by all means use it!

Cheers,

L.

Posted by: avong

i was just wondering if downgrading to 1.0.2 is need for something important during the upgrading process

Posted by: Drakkhen

Well, it is - you need 4.02 firmware on your phone before you can run anySIM 1.2.1g the only way to do this is to upgrade to 1.1.2 first (your phone will lock), and then go back down to 1.0.2 or 1.1.1. I feel that 1.0.2 is a easier path.

L.

Posted by: avong

so if someone were to give a source to download anysim 1.2.1g from installer there is no need to downgrade to 1.0.2 is that correct? or does anysime 1.2.1g only works in 1.0.2 and 1.1.1?

Posted by: Drakkhen

If you unlock your phone with AnySIM 1.2.1u, you will only be able to receive signal with firmware 1.0.2 or 1.1.2.

There is ALWAYS a downgrade - if you are at 1.1.1 with 4.01 baseband and install AnySIM with any method, your baseband will be overwritten with a new 4.02 once you upgrade, so you'll be stuck with a locked phone.

Everything you see in the guide is absolutely essential.

The key is to getting 1.02 OR 1.1.1 with the 4.02 baseband. Then you can unlock it and update the firmware (the baseband would not be overwritten)

L.

Hey...I got to the last step of upgrading on iTunes to 1.1.2 again. (I started off from an unlocked 1.0.2, then it was virginized and I successfully upgraded it to an unlocked 1.1.1) After it was an unlocked 1.1.1...I followed all of your steps up until the final 1.1.2 upgrade and the jailbreak 1.1.2. When I upgraded, it gave me an "error 6" and now my iphone screen is a yellow triangle with "please connect to iTunes". I tried to use the windows.bat and jailbreak...and it saids it "cannot connect to device"...so what should i do? Did i do something wrong? Thanks!

did you upgrade to 1.1.2 originally? This was the first step!
kick your iPhone out of restore mode and restart from Milestone 1

Posted by: jonjscw

Yes, i i did upgrade to 1.1.2 as outlined in step 1. I then restored to 1.0.2 as outlined...then followed all the other steps. I encountering the error 6 on the final upgrade back to 1.1.2. So I still have to re-do the whole thing? If so, how do i kick it out of restore mode? (I actually just tried to use apptapp to kick it out...but didn't seem to work) hmm.....

Delete the iTunesMobileDevice.dll that is in the wiNstaller directory, and copy the iTunesMobileDevice.dll (newer version) that is in your iTunes directory into the wiNstaller directory.

Did you get this resolved? Why did you end up doing this? You should've followed a guide...ANY guide. AnySIM won't work when you're under 1.1.2 - that's one of the reasons you need to downgrade.

Well, at least other people will read this and know what NOT to do

So I still have to re-do the whole thing? If so, how do i kick it out of restore mode? (I actually just tried to use apptapp to kick it out...but didn't seem to work) hmm.....

If you see the yellow triangle, you're still on 1.0.2 - just run apptappinstaller.exe, and your phone will kick out of restore mode.

If you can't find that dll, it's been upped here by MacGeek(?):

Thanks for the tips. Well...i had to restore it back to an unlocked 1.1.1 for now...so that i can use the phone in the next few days...I will try do it over again on the weekend. On the other guides i have seen on the net...it saids that from 1.0.2, i have to upgrade to 1.1.1 first and then upgrade to 1.1.2...is that really necessary?

No, the only reason the guides are saying to upgrade to 1.1.1 is because the Oktoprep is in the 'Tweaks 1.1.1' category.

I've tested running Oktoprep on 1.0.2, and it works perfectly, so now it's just
1.0.2 w/ Baseband 4.02, unlock w/ anysim, Oktoprep,

Then upgrade!

Oh one more question...Do u have any idea as to why i got an error 6 on the final upgrade from 1.0.2 to 1.1.2? I just don't want to repeat the same mistake next time...thanks!

Posted by: Drakkhen

reboot your computer before you make the final upgrade - make sure your current phone is as clean as possible - make sure you didnt 'restore' your phone settings in iTunes during this whole process...

the error 6 happens for some people on and off - it's pretty random from what I can tell on the forums...

Here is a dumb question...what do u mean by "as clean as possible"?

Posted by: Drakkhen

Most people, when they see "installer" on the spring board have the tendancy to dive in and start installing applications..

Don't install anything...just oktoprep and upgrade..

L.

Posted by: acl88

do I need the genuine AT&T sim when i use this upgrade method from 1.0.2 when i get to the virginize mode? when the phone is virgined, will it operate WITH OTHER SIMS?

Posted by: Drakkhen

I always work your personal sim from your carrier - You should never need the AT&T sim for anything.

Drakkhen,
Just wanted to say thanks for the guide. I was using following the MacGeek15 guide, but ran into issues on the 1.1.1 jailbreak/activation. So I found/followed your guide about just putting Oktoprep at 1.0.2 and it worked beautifully.

Thanks so much.

Special thanks to MacGeek15 also for a great MAC tutorial.

Install AnySIM (at this point you should have an unlocked 1.0.2 phone)
Virginize (this will kill the anySIM unlock, but keep your IMEI)
DFU Restore (1.02)

Then aim for Milestone 1

TRUST ME...

Ok, here's where I'm at right now:

I did what you said, and installed anySIM 1.02 on my 1.0.2 iPhone, and that brought back my original IMEI, which I am VERY happy about.

Now the only problem I have is that my txting doesn't work. I cant send or receive any txt's, I cant even receive the free txt from Apple regarding my $100 rebate (my main concern).

So I've decided to follow your guide again, but in the quote above, you say that I now need to Virginize my phone in order to get rid of the anySIM 1.02. How exactly am I supposed to do that? Does that just mean that I need to upgrade using iTunes to 1.1.2? Restore using iTunes to 1.1.2? or what?

Could you please help me out, I really appreciate it.

Hey I'd love to help you out...

YOU GOT YOUR IMEI BACK! That's great!!! Now, the problem is, if you try to upgrade to 1.1.1 or 1.1.2, you're gonna hose your IMEI again...

So....here's what you do

1) I need to confirm that you are on 1.02 with 3.14 baseband
2) Add the following source to Installer: http://markmon.mine.nu:90/iphone/repo/repo.plist
3) Refresh Sources
3) Install BSD Subsystem (System)
4) Install VT100 Term (System)
5) Install Viriginize Script (Unlock That iPhone)

Post back here when you're done that...should take...15 minutes?

Posted by: Gamezilla

ok, got it all installed except for Viriginize Script (Unlock That iPhone), I added the source you gave me, refreshed, and its still not there...

Posted by: Drakkhen

case sensitive....make sure iphone is not 'iPhone' - the phone likes to put that in there automatically..

Refresh sources twice.

markmon.mine.nu:

Sorry, I think I mistyped it...

Posted by: Gamezilla

ok sorry it took so long, but i finally got it all installed, now what?

Posted by: Gamezilla

u still here?

Posted by: Drakkhen

ok...

Go into settings - make sure Autolock is set to 'never'

Run Terminal
type the following commands on your iPhone

cd /usr/bin
virginize

after that, DFU restore to 1.0.2 and you should be LOCKED with a good IMEI..

L.

Posted by: Gamezilla

ok, its doing its thing right now, but i currently have my tmobile sim in there, should i take it out and put my att sim?

Posted by: Drakkhen

no...everything you do is with your tmo sim.

Posted by: Gamezilla

ok, the process is done, I'm about to DFU restore to 1.0.2 and will update you in like 6 mins

Posted by: Gamezilla

ok, the iPhone has been restored to 1.0.2

I currently have the "Activate iPhone" screen along with the "Sim Locked" message

whats next?

Why don't you actually follow the guide, i mean that is what it's there for

Posted by: Gamezilla

ok, from the looks of it, at this point I could just start to follow the guide starting with milestone 1, meaning I need to upgrade to 1.1.2, but do I DFU and restore to 1.1.2 or just upgrade to 1.1.2?

Alright...now, check your IMEI - it's still good, ya>?

If it is, upgrade to 1.1.2 to get the new BB on your phone - That will put you at "MILESTONE 1 COMPLETED".

And Like MacGeek Said...the guide is here

L.

Posted by: Gamezilla

ok, I have problem

I did what you said and upgraded to 1.1.2, and now when I wanna start milestone 2 and DFU and restore to 1.0.2 I cant get the phone into DFU mode.

When I turn it on, I see the wire with the iTunes symbol

is there a different way of getting into DFU when you're in 1.1.2?

Posted by: Drakkhen

same way...check the first post on this thread - it tells you how to DFU properly. A lot of people look at the screen, but it's not as reliable as listening to the system connect / disconnect.

L.

Posted by: Gamezilla

awsome, i got it to work, before I was using the 10 second rule, but now I'm just gonna listen to the sound, its much more reliable.

I'll let you know how things are when I'm completly done, but could you please tell me why my txt messaging isn't working?

could it be because I took off the data plan? wouldn't I still be able to receive a free txt from apple with my confirmation # about my $100 rebate?

is it possible to call apple and have them email me this number or something?

Posted by: Drakkhen

I have no idea about the rebate - for the SMS messages, call your provider and make sure you can receive them...might be on their side.

DFU restore to 1.0.2 again - make sure you actually have the 4.02 baseband on your phone, and also a freshly DFU'd 1.0.2 firmware...

Oh, also please make sure you don't run Oktoprep before you run AnySIM...

L.

Posted by: murano12

Hi Drakkhen,

Thanks for your quick reply. I actually did what you said by DFU restore to 1.0.2 again and still have the same problem. So I restore to 1.1.2 again. Then instead of DFU restore to 1.0.2, I DFU restore to 1.1.1. and was able to unlocked with AnySim 1.2.1u. Problem now is I can't make any phone call. It doesn't say TMobile on the top. I am still at 1.1.1. with 4.02.13 g baseband. What do you think is the problem.

Thanks/MIke

Posted by: Drakkhen

You're fine - AnySIM 1.2.1u was designed specificly for 1.1.2 BB phones, so you won't have service until you upgrade and jail/activate 1.1.2

L.

Posted by: odion

Ok i'm stuck on Milestone 2 d, everytime i run wiNstallerGUI.exe - Activate a window pops up saying "Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click continue the applicaion will ignore this error and attempt to continue....The system cannot find the file specified" When i press continue it freezes and does nothing forcing me to cancel

Posted by: Drakkhen

Did you unzip ALL the files from the archive to a folder before running the exe?

Also try getting wiNstaller from here - the link I orginially posted at the beginning of this thread has an older version of the mobiledevice.dll.

http://www.iphoneanywhere.ca/pages.php?pageid=2

Also, you need Microsoft .NET framework to run this (same link)

Thanks Drakkhen, I'll give it a shot right now.

I have no clue what to do with WinSCP. Please advise.

I used

file protocol: SCP

Port:22 (I tried 21, 22, 23)

Yup i get the same massage

Posted by: Drakkhen

Which IP address are you guys using for the host name? You're not just putting "IP" are you?

If you are, this whole process might be a bit over your heads...

It should be:

Host name: <your phone's IP address>
User name: root
password: dottie
file protocol: SCP

On port 22

You MUST have SSH installed before hand on your phone.

I'm not very good at this and i'm trying to understand this better. Is WinSCP going to connect through the usb cable? Because the pc is hardwired, but i do have a wifi connection. Is this going to be a problem???

Posted by: Drakkhen

WinSCP is going to connect through wifi, not your cable..However, you can keep your phone connect via the cable through the whole process.

finally got it working..
checked with my router...and found different IP...
but anyway..
I am doing the last upgrade now (to 1.12)
Itunes says it will take 2 hours to download the file??
it's like 160MB

is that correct??

Download speed is 100% dependent on your internet speed. I don't know what your speed is, so I can't comment on if 2 hours is correct or not.

It doesn't matter what connection your computer is on...

your phone needs to be on a the same network as your computer.

your phone can only connect to a TCPIP network via wireless...

Posted by: odion

Ok Drakkhen, I'm really worried now. I've completed milestone 2, but anySIM says it cannot unlock the phone. Don't know what i did wrong.

Posted by: Drakkhen

I don't know what you did...it could be one thing you did, it could be serveral. Let's see..

What state was the phone in before you started the process?

Did you finish Milestone 1 before starting milestone 2?

To unlock the baseband, you need it to first be on your phone - did you upgrade firmware to 1.1.2 and baseband to 4.02 before downgrading ONLY the firmware to 1.0.2?

Did you set the proper permissions on the AnySIM.app folder?

Are you using the correct version of AnySIM???

Was your phone unlocked before you started this upgrade? If so, with what? If not, what version of firmware and baseband did you have? Did your phone actually meet the criteria that will allow you to unlock it? (i.e. NOT 1.1.2 out of the box)

Did deviate from guide in any way during the process to make something work?

All these and other factors may contribute to the problem that you are having. My guess is you don't have the 1.1.2 baseband on your phone, but it could be could be any combination of any of these. It's either that, or you just bought a new iPhone with 1.1.2 out of the box.

This guide works, if you follow it fully; completely - However, it does require a minimal skill set with regards to TCP/IP knowledge and networking - with the questions that you were asking before, I'm going to say there a half dozen places that you could have mis-interpreted an instruction incorrectly. So, I really don't know what to say - This hacking stuff isn't novice territory - I'm sorry I can't be more detailed in my Guide.

My best suggestion is to restore to 1.1.2, and dowgrade firmware to 1.0.2, jailbreak and run anySIM again.

Well

L.

Posted by: odion

I bought this from a person who already had it unlocked with anysim and was using version 1.1.1. I downloaded a crappy program and it froze my phone and put it in recovery mode. Then I used itunes to reinstall the newest version (1.1.2), then I thought I followed your instructions exact. I understand it's hard to trouble shoot someone else's retardedness, but thanks for trying. I think i'm going to try starting from scratch.

Posted by: Drakkhen

First thing first;

Can you check the IMEI on the phone for me? Dial *#06# (call) on your phone, and the number should come up - i want to make sure it wasn't 1.0.2 unlocked with AnySIM 1.02. If your IMEI starts with 0049, then you've probably been mislead by the guy who sold you the phone.

If you have an IMEI that's a match to the IMEI that's printed on the back of your phone, Upgrade to 1.1.2 This should get you to Milestone 1 (1.1.2 w/ 4.02 baseband). from there, it shouldn't take you too long this time to get to the end of Milestone 2 as you should be a bit more familiar with the tools and process - I guess practice makes perfect .

Good Luck

L.

I get 011301006.... and i'm using anySim ver. 1.1 I think i'm going to start over like you said. Thanks.

Posted by: Gamezilla

Drakkhen, I fully completed the whole process, and everything was going great with my unlocked 1.1.2 until I put in my tmo sim card inside.

it gave me somekind of message saying it was an invalid sim, but I was able to dismiss this message, and me being the ******* that I am, I thought that I could run anySIM 1.2.1u and get the phone unlocked just to make sure that its unlocked. So I start the program, and it starts copying the firmware, and just freezes.

I was barely able to turn the phone off, and when I turned it back on again, I needed to restore it. So I restored it to 1.1.2 via iTunes, and now I have a fully locked 1.1.2 iPhone.

anyways, my question is this, can I run Jailbreak 1.1.2 on this? is there a simple process of getting back to me being 1.1.2 unlocked? or do I have to go through the whole process again?

Just a quick note to anyone having problems jailbreaking the phone with wiNstaller. I was having repeated problems with wiNstaller last night where sometimes the phone would either hang when going into recovery mode, or it would tell me that the jailbreak succeeded but it would still be in "activate mode". Try using another computer. I was on a laptop last night, but I came into work this morning and tested it on my system here, and everything worked on the first try.

Hi Drakkhen,
Sorry for the question, but i am a noob in every sense of the word...and then some!
I have an unlocked 1.02 and the only reason for me to upgrade would be for the bluetooth battery indicator and volume levels.
My itunes keeps asking me to update to 1.1.2 by pressing the "button"
I am truly petrified doing this as I read that I need to upgrade to 1.1.1 first?
Thank you

You don't need to go to 1.1.1, but if your 1.0.2 phone was previously unlocked with iUnlock (anySIM 1.02), then you're going to have to do a bit of work before you can upgrade to 1.1.2 (or 1.1.1 for that matter) without bricking your phone.

The first thing you want to do right now is get your phone to a locked state (virginize) on 1.0.2 - then you can safely upgrade to 1.1.2. When you get to that point, you can start torwards Milestone 2 on this guide.

Odion,
I think the problem you are having is you are using the wrong anysim. anysim 1.1 was not designed for the v1.1.2 baseband. Download AnySIM 1.2.1u. Drakkhen posted a link to it in his first post on this thread. Download it, unzip it, and make sure you change the name of the folder to anySIM.app IT is case sensitive, and then start all over by upgrading to 1.1.2 and then downgrading to 1.0.2 and go from there. When adding anySIM.app to the the applications folder make sure you set the permission to 0755.
Hope this helps.
