Does BJII have Internet Sharing?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Can someone with BJII verify if it has internet sharing? To have that missing will be a deal breaker for me on this phone. -- Thanks!

Several have posted that it does not, its like the leaked WM6 versions for the BJ, there is a file there but it results in an error. There is USB modem connect, one has indicated the BJII was charging in this mode, which if accurate is quite different from the BJ, which required ICS to both act as a USB modem and charge.

Unfortunately, ICS is not available on the BJ2. I have one in my hand now, trying to find a way to do it. I haven't tried using USB modem connect method. I remember doing that a long time ago and recall it's a multi-step process, unlike ICS which was quick and easy.

Using it in modem mode is really easy. You have to set up a connection the first time on your laptop, then plug in the dial string (follow the instructions) and off you go. I find it very useful and easy.

Would I like to have ICS? Sure. Is it a deal breaker? Not even close.

Does the BJII have only a USB modem or its also supporting the BT-DUN profile. I read somewhere that the Microsoft WM6 team was adding BTDUN back in WM6...

How do I check?

When you pair the phone with a computer does it show a dialup modem as one of the available services in the phone?

Posted by: Parsonsbri

I cant find that option. It is not on the phone or the computer that I can see.

The phone shows "serial port" or "stereo headset" as the two options.
I also saw no reference to it in the owners manual.

I wonder if that is something that can be added.

I guess you can only see the modem from the computer side. On windows right click on the bluetooth icon, select "Add a Bluetooth Device", go through the pairing process. Then go to the bluetooth device list on windows, select the blackjack too and click on "Properties". When the dialog comes up click on "Services". If 'Dial-up networking(DUN)' is listed there it means you can use the BJII as a bluetooth modem without the need of connecting any wires to your computer.

Do you have that working on Vista?

Yes. Works fine on Vista using the same usb modem driver as the BJ1.
I did not have to change a thing.

Isn't the fact that no ICS included means a loss in throughput and performance. Plus the fact that it won't trickle charge in modem mode.

Posted by: rhsauer

Performance is great in modem mode (I regularly get 1600+bps up and 300+ bps down), and it does trickle charge.

Yeah, it appears BJ2 fixed charging issue. Loss of throughput is hard to measure unless you have both on the phone to test. The biggest difference is that AT&T can easily identify your tethering via Modem because of your dial-up number while they can't easily tell if your data usage is from phone or tethering when using ICS. In the future, if they want to nail you based on your tethering usage and not pay them tethering plan, it's very easy for them to do for those who use modem DUN.

Has anyone tried taking the file from another Windows Mobile 6 Phone and copying it on to the BJ2 to see if that works?

Posted by: Foxbat121

Some ppl did that for BJ I WM6 leaked ROM and didn't work. I bet sooner or later someone can find out a solution.

it's not just files that are an issue, there is registry entries and some yet unknown dependencies that prevent it from working...

i tried copying files and some registry entries but so far it's the same problems as with bj1 w/ wm6

some more in depth debugging and hacking will be needed...

i know da_g, who seems the most knowledgeable in the department, was working on it for bj1 w/ wm6 but for now that work has been stopped. hopefully he'll resume it sometime and get to the bottom of it as its likely it will directly help bj2 owners.

Guess I'll keep the BJ1 on hand for tethering...

The BJ2 does work using the modem method, but I'm really not fond of it at all.

Steps to connect your phone to a laptop

BJ1: Plug it in. Start ICS and click Connect.

BJ2: Plug it in. Install modem driver. Configure advanced properties of modem to send initialization string. Set up dial up connection. Configure phone number, username, and password.

I spoke w/ the laptop connect folks and the guy I spoke w/ didn't know why they got rid of the ICS in the BJ2. I had registered my complaint and told them that I'd be returning the other two BJ2s we just purchased and that we'll be sticking with the BJ1 in the meantime...

Don't you mean the reverse?

Posted by: rhsauer

yes, I meant the reverse - thanks

Posted by: BWD

My BJII would not tether without a modem initialization string. After adding that intialization string it worked fine.

I'm not good with this stuff so I decided to post detailed instructions for those of you who are like me and don't know the exact steps.

On the phone:

Go to Settings > Connections> USB Change it from Activesync to Modem.

The phone will trickle charge while tethering with the USB cable so your batter will not die.

On your computer:

Start> Control Panel> Network Connections> Choose "Create a new connection"

Choose "Connect to the Internet"

Choose "Setup my connection manually"

Choose "Connect using a dialup modem"

Name the connection: "Att tether"

For phone number enter *99#

User name (all caps): WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1

Insert the CD from the box and choose the bottom option. Choose to install the Samsung Modem driver.

Hook up the phone using the USB cable.

Go to Control Panel> System> Hardware tab> Device Manager> Modems

Right click the Samsung modem and choose Properties

Under one of the tabs it asks for a Modem Initialization String (advanced tab maybe?).

Enter this exactly: +CGDCONT=1,"IP","WAP.CINGULAR"

Be sure to choose apply or save.

Close that out and go back to Network Connections in Control Panel.

Double click "ATT tether"

Click Properties and then make sure the Samsung modem is chosen as the modem to use with this connection.

Close it out and then double click the desktop icon for your new connection. Click "Connect" and you should be online.

Hope this helps!

I got my BJ2 to connect under DUN as described above, but I noticed many people mentioning that it charges under DUN (not this thread, but others), but in my case it most definitely does not charge under DUN. The charge light never kicks in at all. BTW, when you tether under WAP, can ATT detect that you are tethered like when you use ISP? It is my understanding that they cannot detect tethering under ICS via the BJ1 (which I'm keeping just in case). Don't want to give up that nice, cheap MM200 plan (or at least till they pry it away from me).

Thanks BWD! Works great and charges just fine.

My results:

Is the red charging light actually on? It is definitely not on when I'm using DUN.

Yes the red light is on.

So let me get this straight.
You CANNOT Teather via Bluetooth on the BJ2???
I just got on last nite and after reading this, tried to setup a connection with my Mac, and the Mac could not find and services on the BJ2, nothing.
Is there someway to turn this services on or is the thing going back to ATT???
