Will Apple Updating Eventually Make Unlocked iPhone Useless?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

So I was reading about the iPhone and Yahoo Answers and several individuals stated that Apple will eventually do an update that makes unlocked iPhones paperweights. To quote the poster:

"BTW the other poster is correct apple is doing an update on an undetermined day that will pretty much make all the unlocked iPhones paperweights. If the phone is sent into Apple warranty to have it exchanged for that reason, dont expect to get it back. Apple never returns devices that they feel have been tampered with and therefore out of warranty."

Is true? I'm asking because I am considering buying an iPhone and I don't want to risk having $500 (or thereabouts) basically flushed down the toilet.

how so? just dont update it....

So it doesn't auto-update when you connect it to iTunes?

we are fine....they done auto update and thiets not even that many unlocked

yeah, I'm sure those Yahoo Answers people are absolute experts. They also probably have advance information on the iPhone 2, and will have them before anyone else.

Basically, they're idiots who are talking out of their @$$.

Thanks for the reassurance guys, I can now buy an iPhone with (relative) peace of mind

Look at the history of tech, no protection scheme is unbreakable. I don't know why they even bother. If people want it cracked it will crack. Given time and computing horsepower no protection scheme can last for long.

Yeah, after readin the dev team forums for hours on end, it is clear that even though there is no unlock for new 1.1.2 with the new bootloader, they are working on it very hard. Wonder if they have normal jobs or just do that for a living lol

Just to make sure before I do anything, when I hook up my iPhone to iTunes, it won't automatically update will it?

Posted by: KrzrMonkey

make sure you disable the feature in itunes and on the iphone

Posted by: Nusirilo

Where is that setting in iTunes? I don't want to disable automatic syncing to my iPod but the only option I can really see is "Disable automatic syncing to iPod and iPhone."

EDIT: And where is the option on the iPhone?

Posted by: KrzrMonkey

personally with my nano i prefer manually syncing.. but there is the update button that must be pressed..
macgeek15 seems to be very knowlegable, id ask him..

Posted by: Nusirilo

K, I PMd him but maybe someone else will know the answer so I don't have to wait until he logs on lol. Thanks for the tip though

In iTunes, Edit - Preferences - Uncheck "Check for updates automatically". Not sure about the iphone.
