RIM goes to touch screens

RIM's 9000 series devices will have touch screens and no plastic keyboards.

The article quotes a source at AR Communications, which appears to be a copywriting firm.

I'm hopeful that the firm did more than regurgitate the (admittedly) photo-shopped Blackberry 9000 from the BGR site (which was up several months ago and actually fooled Engadget I think)....

A touchscreen BB is exactly what I DONT want. I hope RIM does not forget their business customers.

I hope not either. No touch screens.

Touch-screen typing? That's why I don't like the iPhone.

RIM is NOT stupid. They will NOT forget what brings in 80+% of their revenue, profits and income = truss it!

Best believe this is just a rumor, and if it pans out then its just refering to a new line of consumer devices. Surprisingly this article doesn't mention for tactile feedbad - I'm guessing haptics like the new Samsung Giorgio Armani phone has will be implemented. To be honest this is a BAD road for RIM to be going down, considering improvements on the full touchscreen concept that iPhone started, with HTC's Touch improving on and continuing. FUrthermore a HUGE uphill battle for both of those with S60's upcoming touch screen interface = huge Consumer pleasure already.

I say yes for touch screens for those who want them. You need not worry as RIM will ALWAYS maintain their proper keyboard units. The article say more in the 8xxx series is on the way.

I say let RIM go full blast at the consumer market and for those who do not need to do alot of typing, the 9000 series with full Blackberry options is going to be quite attractive.

You who say NO TOUCHSCREENS for RIM will be looking at these new featured devices with envy! DO not forget what you said this day and do not buy one! <vbg>

I got too much stock in RIM to even think they do not know what they are doing!

How about a touch screen AND a full QWERTY keyboard? I can deal with that. I mean, Treo has been doing it for years.

Posted by: CarlGalgano

I have had treos and dont miss the touchscreen at all. I do agree with Greg though, if there is a market for touchscreen devices (ala the iPhone) and RIM can exploit it, then I say go for it. I just dont personally want one. But any technology that can advance an RIM device will help to refine all the devices.

One tidbit I saw somewhere is that 55% of new unit sales were for Pearl devices.

Posted by: NJBlackBerry

70% of sales are still to corporate accounts.

I found this funny:

Among the updates will be "a Curve with WiFi," according to Levy. These devices may have other updates like GPS location tracking

You mean the 8310 and 8320 which have been out for a couple of MONTHS now? The article's dated 11/20, so that shouldn't be an excuse.

With more and more confirmations that BlackBerry 9000 series will have at least one touchscreen model -- do not worry.

RIM is going to maintain QWERTY and SureType models, while introducing Touchscreen models -- and probably the series beyond 9000 may contain at least one hybrid.

I feel there will continue to be a BlackBerry model for everybody. Some of prefer keyboards, and others will prefer touchscreens.

(Actually, for some people, the best of both worlds would be a Curve with a touchscreen that can be DISABLED on demand. Touchscreens are good for a few areas: Web browser, writing, etc, and multi-touch touchscreens are good for photos, zooming, zoom-capable browser, and other applications that benefit from a zooming .... Would only use the touchscreen for certain stuff, but disable it (via hotkey?) to avoid accidental taps, messups, etc.)

RIM is becoming the New Nokia, and want to take 1% of cellphone market, 2% of cellphone market. RIM is aggressive going after the consumer market, and BlackBerry plan prices falling rapidly (new $15 Canadian BlackBerry plans), data can now be used without a BlackBerry plan (generic $5 data plans work on BlackBerry with third-party software), etc. RIM is going to keep QWERTY models, AND the SureTyple models, AND introduce touchscreen models.

Well Said!

I would hope they figure out how to make better multimedia devices before trying to "become the New Nokia"
