HTC Touch, Skype voice doesn't work?

Anyone on the same boat?

Voice Testing service doesnt seem to work, hangs up after 38 seconds and I don't hear anything after the initial two beeps when dialing.

From what I have read Skype does not work well with the 200mhz CPU

SKYPE doesn't work well on a cell phone at all. You need at least 3G speeds or higher, a decent processor and decent memory.

Can't really see the need for it on a cell anyway, since you probably already have a voice plan.

there is a great programme i have used; called IM+ SKYPE that works wonderfully and can even work on GPRS settings; uses very little bandwith...!!

you can always connect with wifi and use it on that.. but if you are running it of GPRS and EDGE you cannot make my calls at all...

IM+ skype is optimized for gprs speed...

okay, what's the catch?

Why don't I just purchase a HTC Touch with unlimited data from Bell and then use the IM + Skype w/ unlimited and make all calls through that app, therefore incurring no airtime charges ever to Bell?

This setup seems too good to be true...

The software calls your phone AND your contacts phone, so when you pick up your phone, the call is linked up.

There really is no catch. If your cell offers unlimited incoming calls and you have an unlimited skype account, your good to go

I'm still on the fence with this one. I really don't make long distance calls all to often and I already have unlimited calling through the old City Fido plan.

And my trial period for IM+ for Skype ended a day earlier than it's expiry

just use fring

Posted by: BigOil

why would you need unlimited incoming? Couldn't people call your skype-out number and therefore only use data or am I misunderstanding the service?

If they are on a PC, yes, you could receive a call through skype, but in Canada, we don't have a SKYPEIN option yet - that is - the ability to setup local numbers for people to call you through a landline on your skype.

Guys to get skype to work you have to use beta 18.

It will work with the touch for sure, tried tested.

Yes... it works - being I can hear audio on both ends of the phone call - BUT... the audio is horrible.

Wife described it like this: "it sounds like two wrong lines have crossed... I can't understand anything..."

There really is no reason why they can't optimize the audio stream for EVDO... voice chat does NOT use up much bandwidth.

Just be careful on what you do with it because Bell Mobility, Telus Mobility and Verizon have policies which prohibit using services like Skype. Now don't be paranoid but don't abuse the service, otherwise they have the right to terminate your contract. Here is an excerpt from Bell Mobility's service agreement;

19. Use of Service.

You are responsible to safeguard your Device, and for the use of your Device and the Services by you and any other persons, except as provided under Section 17 above. You shall not use or allow others to use the Service or your Device if such use:

is for, or results in, any illegal, abusive, annoying or offensive activities, including making available offensive content, the commission or encouragement of a criminal offense, stalking, harassment, spamming, disrupting or interfering with the Internet, any network, computers or other devices, transmission of a virus or other harmful component, defamation, intellectual property infringement, or interference with other clients' service;
consumes excessive network capacity in Bell's reasonable opinion, or causes our network, or our ability to provide services to others, to be adversely affected;
is for multi-media streaming, voice over Internet protocol or any other application which uses excessive network capacity multi-media streaming, voice over Internet protocol or any other application which uses excessive network capacity that is not made available to you by Bell;
is to operate an email, web, news, chat or other service.

I'm not sure how Bell figures that voip uses "excessive network capacity"... when I use skype on the pc, it uses maybe 5kb / second... I hardly see this as excessive!

I'm sure anyone would be able to fight this one in court - after all, Bell would have to prove that your 15 minute voip call caused their network to buckle - wouldn't they?

Yes, I read that clause of the service agreement and had to laugh to myself. Bell has friggin online Youtube viewing as part of their unlimited browsing sales pitch in their own brochures - isn't that streaming multimedia?? Give me a break. I will use IM + Skype for a month with less data usage than a few Youtube videos.

IM + Skype calls work for me - clear as a bell (Bell with HTC Touch and EVDO). However, I keep losing my connection after each call and have to reconnect. What's with that?

There seems to be some misunderstandings... IM+ Skype is not the same as regular Skype. Regular Skype uses your data connection to make a voice connection and thereby avoids using any cellular voice minutes.

IM+ Skype uses your Skype account AND your cellular voice connection; You enter the number or Skype contact you want to reach and IM+ Skype calls your cellular phone (voice call) and then uses your Skype account to call the other contact and puts them together. So, if you have free incomming cellular calls, this allows you to avoid using any outgoing minutes. It also allows you to use Skype for long distance instead of your cellular voice rates. On my Bell cell plan, incoming minutes count the same as outgoing, so IM+ Skype is only a benefit for long distance calls. I make very few of these so not really a big deal to me.

As far as feeling that you have a legal right to use Skype (or any other form of data use that Bell might object to), I'm not sure how you see that as being useful. Consider the highly publicized case of that guy who received an $85,000 bill for data use. He objected. Bell said that would allow him to retroactively apply a full data plan, and pay the overages as per that plan, reducing his charges to something like $5000. If he refuses to pay, they will likely cut him off and send the bill to a collections agency. Still refuse to pay and your credit rating goes down the crapper. If Bell took a hard line, in order to protect you credit rating, you would have to pay the bill, THEN sue Bell to try to recoup your costs. This may take significant work on your part, might require professional legal services and very likely be drawn out over an extended period of time.

I think the best protection you have is that the cellular industry is competitive and is openning up to additional investors. As such, individual companies don't want bad press. To avoid this, they will likely warn you at least once before levying charges on a "discretionary use," but no guarantee. Also, if you stay under the radar by not being in the small percentage of really high bandwidth users, you will probably avoid their attention all together. Like those who speed; if you are a little over but moving with the pack, you will probably be okay. If you are blowing by everyone else, you'll get away with it for a while, but it shouldn't be a shock that you eventually get some "extra attention."

YMMV...
