okay so ive had the duo since a few days before its launch and ive already had 2. i returned one because it ahd a TON of dust under the screen after several weeks of use and i couldnt even read the battery life indicator. now im on my second and im having the same problem. it was funny ebcause the att rep gave me a new one so fast i barely had to wait. didnt even ask questions. is anyone else having this problem?

Posted by: x2222

Yea, mine's definitely not that bad, but there are notable white specs of dust that's accumulating under the screen. I just hope its nothing dangerous.

Posted by: theforest316

I'm on my 2nd Duo and was told this is probably going to keep happening no matter what. 1st one had it 3 days after I got it, same thing with my new one, not even a week and its already in the same spot.

Do you keep the phone in a pocket, or in a belt-clip carrier, or some kind of holster/clip carier?

I have a RAZR that got some dust under the screen, but only because I had it in my pocket. Also with the RAZR, the screen is held on with an adhesive. I have heard of people peeling off the screen, wiping it off, and re-attaching it. I don't know if this applies to the DUO.

I had the same problem. I was really on the fence due to other issues and the other day I went to the beach and the phone was in my pocket the entire time just as it always is and the sand particles got behind the screen. Returned it today and purchased a Tilt. I ordered it over the phone as most stores are out of the tilt and I should have it in a couple of days.

Other issues I have experienced with the DUO -

When you are in a application, usually you can exit it by hitting the end call button. Sometimes that does not work and you have to click the Home button.
Camera - Sometimes I click on the Camera button to launch the camera and I get a insufficient RAM message, I have to go into Task Manager and I only have about 3 things running, I kill two and then the camera button will open the camera.

Sometimes I cannot open any mail/messaging apps. Outlook, Yahoo, or Test messaging, the buttons are completely unresponsive. I have to turn off the phone and turn it back on and then they work.

I hope to have a way more pleasant experience with the Tilt, although I really liked the compactness of the DUO, too bad it SUCKS!

yup now its almost as bad as before. i never thought it would be this much of a piece of crap. its in my pocket, but theres no excuse for that. most phones are kept in pockets or for women a purse with lint in it. a screen should be sealed off from that. my brother has a razr, kept it in his pocket for close to two years now. nothing on it.

Man, my daughter just noticed dust starting to build up on her 5 day old Duo. That really stinks and she is really bummed about it. I hate it that others are having the same problem. I guess we may have to consider other options as we are in our 30 day period.

Posted by: Norcalz71

wish it didnt have this problem, i got one on sunday an by yesterday afternoon it had dust under the screen in the upper left and right corners, sucks. otherwise i am liking it. ill probably stick with it because i can only really see it when the screen is off, but it is annoying.

Posted by: ender330

yup well i just got out of my 30 day period and im stuck with it i guess seeing as i was too lazy to go in and get a different phone last weekend when i had the chance. damn. ill have to do some complaining to get this fixed.

Posted by: tkrandall

Has Pantec acknowledged this problem yet?

Posted by: Norcalz71

do you think this is something pantec can address/fix for us? mine is already dusted to the point that it annoys me, doesnt really inhibit anything but its just a dumb problem to have.

also, can i exchange the phone for a new one in a different att store than i bought it from? I'm down at college right now about 250 miles from home but i got the phone at a store back home.

Posted by: ender330

to answer your second question i believe you can exchange it somewhere else. the first one i believe to be a no to the best of my knowledge.

Posted by: Norcalz71

hmmm ill have to go check the local store then and see if i can swap it. sucks because for what i need, i really like this phone but the dust is a big turn off, its mostly in the top two corners but a little bit in the bottom left. any chance it would be possible to blow some compressed air through there periodically to somewhat clear it out without damaging components? i cant really guess where the dust is getting in from

Posted by: tkrandall

I emailed Pantech about the dust matter and got this (partial) response:
Thank you for contacting Pantech customer support.

There is no service bulletin regarding this issue. If the dust becomes worse you will have to ask AT&T what the proper procedure will be to access the situation.

Posted by: Norcalz71

kind of a lame response, I wonder if anything will come of this. I like the duo, but after a week an 3 days of ownership if there is any glare on the screen at all i cant even read the top 1/4 of the screen due to the dust

Posted by: tkrandall

I asked the store this morning about it - they said first they had heard of the problem, but to bring the phone in for a swapout no questions asked.

Posted by: liquidbw

you guys suck... I never noticed the dust untill know. and now its glaring me in the face >

Posted by: tkrandall

Sorry! We are looking to get a leather type pouch for the Duo, hoping that will prevent worse dust accumulation with the next one....i.e no more jacket pocket, book bag, etc without a cover on it.

This type of answer blows my mind, sorry sir your the first to mention. Yah right, why dont they (vendor) ever just admin its @#$@#% up. Dang.

This whole dust situation is getting out of control. I'm on my 2ns phone and it happened again all the time while being in a case. Makes no sense, I have no idea how it even gets in there. Makes me want to sell the phone and get something new. It will probably be up today in the b/s/t forum tonight

Posted by: ender330

alright i went down to the att store told em bout the problem again. they told me i couldnt exchange it out of my trial, and told me to see the areas single technician (unbelievable). i went back again and they told me they hadnt heard any about the problem and told me the same thing. i had printed out this thread and showed the guy and he was like okay there is a problem call us when you see anything about a new version coming out and well replace it. i think thats bs too because it doesnt seem as if theyre doing anything about it. i dunno...

Here's an answer I received from Pantech after I sent them an email complaining.

Heres what I wrote

I want to file a complaint about the Pantech Duo. I have had this phone since it first came out. The 3rd day that I had it I noticed dust accumulating under the screen. I returned the phone for another one. The 2nd phone I received had the same exact problem. I have kept a screen protector on and the phone in a case since day 1. Now on the 2nd phone it has been accumulating more and more. I can't return this one because I am out of my 30 day window. i have been reading about this problem from a lot of people online now. What can be done with this? Will there be a fix to this problem? Will you replace my phone? If it keeps going like this I won't even be able to see the screen due to all the dust? What will be the remedy to me and so many others people?

Their reply.

but is this going to fix the issue..or just rmove the dust that will eventually return?

Posted by: 2006tsxnavi

Used my Duo for three days and returned it. Materials felt cheap. Very loose feeling. Purchased a HTC S710 and Luv it. This is my 3rd HTC product, very solid and they improve every year.

Posted by: tkrandall

I suspect the "dust" maybe be coming from components inside the phone.

Posted by: theforest316

Here's a response I got after I sent my phone in 3 weeks ago to Pantech. My response back was saying this is totally unacceptable that I would have to pay them to repair my phone when they have a flaw in their production of it. A complaint to the BBB might be needed if my request is not satisfied due to their flaws.

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for sending your equipment to us for repair. Our factory trained technicians have determined the repair on your Pantech Duo is not covered by the manufacturers warranty program. We can clean up the LCD for a total repair charge of $27.50. For your convenience, we accept major credit cards over the phone.

WOW..you have got to be kidding me. Thank god i sold my pantech duo before the dust situation happened..sorry to hear that...seems like pantech does not take responsibility of their design flaw

Posted by: theforest316

Got a call back from Pantech stating that I will be reimbursed for the $27.50 and Pantech will pay for the lcd cleaning. They also stated that Pantech HQ is getting involved and has something in the works where it will fix the dust problem and will be covered under the warranty.

Posted by: dr. adam

Posted by: ender330

ya the problem has gotten worse to the point where the upper left corner is nearly black. thanks for that info, ill get mine sent in asap.

Anything more than a voice call on this? I'd like an official statement.

Well I finally took the Pantech Duo back to the farm. This phone truly SUCKS!!!!. The biggest issue is the camera blows. The phone feels more plastic than anything. You pretty much have to upgrade the majority of the phone just to make it feel normal. UGH!!!, bye by Pantech and Hello HTC Tytn II or Touch, hmmm I like the sliders so Tytn II it is
