Re-map Media Net and CV buttons?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: iJITSU

I've searched and although I found many threads detailing how to re-map hard buttons, I haven't been able to find the files (short_poc, etc) in WM6. I would like to re-map the Media Net and Cellular Video buttons on my Blackjack II. I changed the home page in PIE, but the external button must be specifically directed to launch Media Net. Anyone know how to re-map these buttons?

Wow, no answer to this yet? With my previous Windows Mobile phones, I've always found or read about a hack of some kind for the dedicated keys hardware makers like to have, so I am really surprised (and bummed) that this one remains a mystery. I've been searching various sites for the past couple of hours, as well as doing quite a bit of registry and shortcut tweaking, but nothing's done the trick...

Posted by: iJITSU

Me too. I found Key paths in the registry and changed the path for CV and Medianet to something else but it had no effect so I must be in the wrong area.

Yeah, I´m really upset about this. How does ATT dare to use TWO buttons of precious space in the keyboard for this and not letting the user to change it?...

Posted by: philpeeps

it could be like the message key on the BJ1...rename whatever shortcut you want to the media net .lnk file and same for the CV .lnk file in the start menu....

Posted by: ksblackney

Pressing the Media Net and Cellular Video keys appears to execute the \Windows\MediaNet.exe and \Windows\CV.exe programs. Both programs contain Unicode URLs. It ought to be possible to edit the URLs or at least replace the programs.

make a shortcut for whatever app you want, rename it to whatever the MN or CV shortcut name is in the start menu and restart. Press the button and see if it launches the app you selected...

The only thing I've found which is editable are the Fn shortcuts.

Like Fn-W normally opens MediaNet.exe. You can change the registry to where it just opens iexplore.exe.

I guess no one wants to try this....this is the same way you change the BJ1 mail button shortcut...no registry editing required....

I files are marked read only. I tried changing the attributes, deleting and renaming and none of it worked. I always got permission errors. I tried it from Total Commander on the phone as well as through sync center, both were unsuccessful. Has anyone else tried this?

Same result here. I tried manipulating CV.exe and MediaNet.exe to no avail. Got permissions errors. I also tried to use the SDA Application Unlock to gain access, which seemed not to work either.

Posted by: philpeeps

i'm telling you...forget the .exe files...try changing the shortcuts to those files in the start menu. if it's named "cv.lnk", make a shortcut to another program, such as PIE and name it "cv.lnk" and replace the shortcut in the start menu with this "new" shortcut to PIE that is sort of mis-named...them reboot and press the button and see what happens.....

Posted by: pgood

I did try it with the lnk file in both the start menu and windows directory locations. I received the same error messages for all files.

Posted by: rhsauer

I've tried every permutation of the above, overwriting both the .lnk and .exe files (I save backups of each), and wasn't able to remap these keys. Very frustrating. I guess, in exchange for its $200 subsidy on the phone, ATT takes the position that it's entitled to some keyboard real estate.

tried it but didn't work

I actually wrote my own launcher app to handle this. Feel free to give it a try.

Instructions:
1) Make sure your phone is App unlocked (search the web for fav method to do this)
2) Unzip attached file
3) Modify *.config files to point to your favorite app (MediaNet.exe.config corresponds to the at&t button and CV.exe.config corresponds to the CV button)
4) Drop all four files into the \Windows directory on your phone
5) The first time you try to execute you will get a warning that the executable is from an untrusted source.

Some notes:
1) Upon using the hardkeys with the above, if you look in TaskManager you'll see a CV.exe and a MediaNet.exe application listed. They remain unless you reboot your phone or kill them. This is to make task switching as fast as possible (my first implementation was a simple command line tool but then it had about a 2-3 second lag each time I used the hardkey, so I switched to this method).
2) The first use of each button will take a few seconds as it loads the launcher app and reads the xml config. However, subsequent uses of the hardkeys will basically be instant.
3) If you change the config file be sure to kill the app using TaskManager and re-launch using the hardkey to pick up the new config file. I only read config at launch.
4) The MediaNet and CV shortcuts in your start menu will now launch whatever app you've configured. I actually removed those shortcuts from my start menu as it was too cluttered. If you're one of the few who actually uses MediaNet or CV you can still get to them using the IE favorites links.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

It works well. If someone found a way to fix the LED everthing would be perfect.

If the phone reboots, do we need to rerun the app? If so, where can we specify to automatically run it after the system boots up?

When you click either of the hard key buttons it attempts to run the respective launcher app. If the app isn't already running it starts and then launches whatever you've configured it to launch. If it's already running it simply launches whatever you've configured it to launch.

There's really no advantage to automatically running it at system boot unless you're really anal about performance for the very first time that you use the hard key. That said, if you are, then simply add shortcuts to the two apps in your \windows\startup folder. However, note, if you do so then not only will the two launcher apps start up at each boot, but whatever you've configured them to launch will also be started at each boot. Doesn't make much sense to me (I hate having a bunch of stuff automatically starting after boot) but maybe you have a special use case for it.

My phone IS app unlocked (using SurrealNetworksAppUnlock), but it will not let me overwrite the original EXE's. I get a permissions errors every time. Any ideas?

Posted by: jkozlow3

Nevermind...found the problem. Vista will not let you delete or overwrite system files (cv.exe and medianet.exe).

I just did this method using XP on a different computer and it worked perfectly!

Posted by: jkageler

ok, here is a dumb question...

how do i actually "Modify *.config files to point to your favorite app (MediaNet.exe.config corresponds to the at&t button and CV.exe.config corresponds to the CV button)"

Thanks to a different post I was able to hack my BJII and get internet sharing on my phone again. Lets just say I want to use the CV button to launch the internet sharing program. How exactly do I do that?

I have the zipped files on my BJII now and just need to know how to point them in the right direction.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

So on your computer you unzipped the file, right? There should be 5 files as a result: 2 .exe files, 2 .exe.config files, and a README.

In your CV.exe.config file (open it in Notepad) you should see a line like:
<add key="Path" value="/Program Files/Live Search/LiveSearch.exe" />

modify it to something like:
<add key="Path" value="/Windows/IntShrUI.exe" />

Save the file.

Copy the 4 files (2 .exe and 2 .exe.config) to your /Windows directory.

Now the CV button should launch your Internet Sharing app.

Anyone know how to override this behavior in Vista? I don't have an XP machine handy...

Thanks,

Thanks,

It works fine for me in Vista. When you have the folder open. Press the Alt key and go to Tools -> Folder Options. Under the View tab uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files" option. Then copy the files to the /Windows directory and when it prompts you as to whether you'd like to replace the files say yes.

i still can't get the CV and MediaNet deleted... i get a message saying: "CV could not be deleted. You do not have permission to delete this item." i used Surreal Network App Unlock and Mocado's gps activation and unlock programs... but do not know if my bjII is unlocked... please help!!! thank you!

When I try it, I get the error, "CV.exe could not be placed on this device. You do not have permission to create this item."

Actually, hmm, that makes me think I need to disable UAC for a second... (Or figure out how to copy as an administrator.)

Edit: Nope, that wasn't it. Same error with UAC on or off, and my account does have admin privileges. Still not sure why I don't have permission to replace the file.

Ok, I was able to copy the files over using Total Commander. Thanks for the launcher app!

This has worked great for me on my BJ2.

Couple follow-up questions:
* Anyone know how to remap the "Silent" key?
* Is it possible to map the long hold button press seperately from the short hold button press? (E.g., a long hold on the CV button brings up the power management app, but a long hold on the AT&T button does nothing.)

Thx.

Here is the problem I am having, maybe it's not a problem but a feature...

I set the MediaNet config file to point to MS VoiceCommand and when I hit the medianet button, The Icon bar displays Please Wait and if I don't say my command in time, the "Please Wait" does not go away. I can't hit the button again until I hit the end button.

Anyway to get the button to work the same as if I were to hit the icon in the MRU plugin?

Hey, how were you all able to drop the flies in \Windows? When I try it says that the CV.exe and medianet.exe are on the phone's ROM and therefore I can't overwrite (or do anything really) to them. I was using Resco File Explorer.

Posted by: akelley

thanks so much! much more convenient device now!

Posted by: shippsy

every time i try to copy over the files, it asks to replace cv.exe and medianet.exe and i say yes, but it says that it can't do it. and it then asks to skip or cancel. anybody know how to copy the files over?

Posted by: dcoffing

What did I do now.... I had it working when I first installed it a couple of days ago but I did a hard reset and reloaded my stuff and it isn't working now. I built a couple of shortcuts to the CV.exe and the Medianet.exe so I could run them from my start menu and when I click on them they do run apparently because the live.com and the wls both come up. But if I then try the same thing from the actual CV and AT&T buttons they still do the default operation. I look into the task manager and I notice that both the CV and Medianet apps are not being listed so something strange is going on

Great idea! I would love to have flexibility too!

Remapped my Medianet button to Opera and Google home page...remapped my CV to Googlemaps....thanks =)

Is there anyway to not have the CV.exe and MediaNet.exe to not come up in Task manager?

How Did you get it to remap to Opera? Opera is listed in my Java programs but I cant find an .exe for it anywhere, same for G-Mail, and my other "java" programs.

what did you write for the path file? and where do i find these java prog .exe's on the phone in the future.

just open up opera and put it in the background, open up task manager, should be opera.exe i believe...

Its in my Programs files/opera, so it looks like that pretty much.

The home page is just set in Opera to go to google.

oh, my mistake... im using opera mini, which is only listed as "java" in task manager... maybe time for an opera upgrade. thanks for responding though.

Ya, im using the opera, not mini...it will show up in program files once you install it.

Also, welcome to the forums.

So has anyone come up with a sure-fire method to overwrite the .exe files? I'm also a Vista only user, I've tried to delete, overwrite, move these things to no avail. Even copying the new files to my storage card and trying to overwrite them with total commander was a no-go.
