VOIP forwarding as an alternative to bad wireless service?

Hey folks,

So I'm on AT&T in the US (iPhone )

Sadly, my home has terrible reception. I have to go outside to make a call, and even then its only a bar or two.

Our land line doesn't have long distance service, so it makes things tricky sometimes.

What I'd like to do is this:

1) Have my own VOIP number that normally would be answered via a bluetooth headset on my PC
2) Forward my calls that come to my AT&T number to this VOIP number
3) (Ideally) have my AT&T phone receive these calls through its WiFi connection.

Now, I'm sure its easy to set up forwarding on my iPhone to a different number.

What are your suggestions?

I've read up a bit on Skype and it doesn't seem terribly expensive, but I know almost nothing about VOIP.

It should be doable...

Do some research regarding this first though:
-Where can you forward calls with AT&T (to what numbers) and how are they charged (I know some providers charge separately for Call Forwarding)....
-May want to do a little searching on VoIP over WiFi on the IPhone (I am goona do a little searching myself, but pretty much see if there is any type of softphone you can run on the IPhone for VoIP, Fring is one thing to look at)
-Make sure you can use your home WiFi with the IPhone

-The simplest starting point is to get yourself a GrandCentral Number (these are free and there are local numbers accross the US, you'll need an Invite though)
-Also Get a free Gizmo Acct

Then when you figure out how you can configure a VoIP link on your IPhone, it's just a matter of SIP registering IPhone with the Gizmo account (GrandCentral can ring Gizmo directly)...

So the final result should be like this:

Your Phone Number>>GrandCentral Number>>Gizmo>>>Your USB Phone or ATA (like PAP2) or SoftPhone(a piece of software in your computer) or IPhone running VoIP App over WiFi registered with Gizmo rings

Short of the cost to forward from your Phone to GrandCentral, the rest can be had for completely free

Personally, I wouldn't bother with Skype for now....

For some ideas in terms of free numbers and forwarding take a look here (it may not help you with this project directly, but should give you a bit of info about VoIP options out there): http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/...ad.php?t=454642

While that setup is definitely cheap, it is also dependent on the tenuous connection between GrandCentral and Gizmo.

I wouldn't suggest to go for Skype for now as well, even If it's a cheaper alternative.

Did you talk with AT&T about that problem? I'm pretty sure that they have a few different solutions for you using their Voip service.

I do the opposite thing. I have an AT&T VOIP line that is set up so that when people call it, it rings both the VOIP-based line AND my mobile phone. I tell everybody to call the VOIP number.

but if people call the voip number, the forwarded calls to your mobile will not be treated as m2m minutes? cirrect?

I just read this article and I think that it is close to what your looking for.

A few days ago I read an article comparing the voyager and the iphone and the consensus was that both were good but neither were able to use a voip because of the restrictions of the providers att and verizon.
