Question about the DUO

I've been doing research on a new phone to get and I've decided to go with the DUO. I'm opening a new AT&T account on Saturday and buying the DUO with a new plan. I planned on getting the basic minutes plan and unlimited messaging for $20. But since the DUO is a smart phone will AT&T make me order the unlimited data package just to use the phone?

Yes, they'll require you to take one of these data plan.

DataConnect 10MB $24.99 a month
PDA Personal $29.99 a month
PDA Personal Max $39.99 a month
PDA Personal Max w/UNLIMITED M2M Messaging $44.99 a month
PDA Personal Max Unl Messaging $49.99 a month
DataConnect (Unlimited) $59.99 a month
PDA Personal Max (Tethering) $69.99 a month
PDA Personal Max /w Unl M2M Messaging $74.99 a month
PDA Personal Max Unl Messaging (Tethering) $79.99 a month

Word of caution though, for some reason, anytime you use IM, it uses data. You can rack up alot of data $ if you don't have one of the unlimited pda plan. I currently have the $44.99/mo right now cause I IM alot (over 1200 text right now) and have over 10MB of data.

Good choice on the Duo. I get alot of oohs and ahhs but battery life is below average.

Thanks, but on the AT&T forums I was told that I didn't need to sign up for one of the data packages and could just use pay-as-you-go internet usage and that Id only have to sign up for a data package to qualify for a rebate.

They're also right. If you want the rebate it's required that you sign up for the data package. But you can go pay-as-you-go internet usage with your unlimited messaging. But remember, anytime you use IM (especially AIM, Yahoo), it uses data. I should've said they highly recommend you get one of the data plan (not require).

That's what I thought, so thanks for clearing that up. And I use AIM and MSN on my computer at home, so I have no need to use it on my phone and I dont have to worry about using data. But yeah, I heard about its below average battery life. Doesnt pantec make an extended battery for the DUO?

The battery can last you a solid day. It's not bad unless you spend a good part of that day surfing 3g websites.

I'm pretty sure the data plan now allows you to go with the the $20 messaging plan as you suggested.

It's a great phone, you can't go wrong. I'm just learning how exactly I will be using my duo. As cool as surfing the internet is all day, I don't really need a phone to do that, nor is getting instant push email that big of a priority either. The truth I'm realizing is that 3g really isn't all that necessary but unfortunately all the new phones coming out have it and you are forced into the rip-off plans for exuberant data service.

My advice. Get the full data plan and try switching out of it (to a lower data plan) online once you get your rebate money.

Rather than start a new thread, since I also have a question about the DUO i'll just put it here.

Do you have to be in 3G for the XM radio to work?

I guess no one manufacturers an extended battery for the DUO.

You only have to get the data plan for one month then you can cancel it. I got one two weeks ago they gave me the unlimited data plan then at the end of the month told me to call and cancel.

you can get unlimited media net for $19.99 a month and use all the data u want if you're only gonna be Iming or something...anything more though you might want a larger package

I loved my duo when I had it but the dust under the screen was a big no no to me so I ended up returning it. I loved it and would get it again if battery life increased and they fix the dust problem.

U might think, yes you need to have a data plan... yes you should, but despite what anyone else said above i dont have data with it. if you Upgrade your phone you can keep your old plan, so if your old play did not have data you will not need to get a data plan..

Oh fo realz? Last I checked my plan hasn't changed, all I had before (and currently have) is unlimited data transfer for $20 a month, by choice. AT&T said nothing about changing plans when I upgraded to my Duo, so I'd check this information before taking it as fact.

Big 2nd. Not saying I'd ever get a smart phone without a data plan, but you can if you want. THE ONLY PHONE that requires a separate plan to activate/use on the AT&T network is the iPhone as far as I know.

Wrong try again. If you read the fine print on the current rebates for At&T all u need is one of the following to get the 100 mail in rebate (PDA personal plan or a 45 $ or higher pda plan or a 20 $ or more message plan.) With a new 2 year contract you get the phone for 99 $ with any of those select packages added to your service.

And for upgrades. Funny thing I had to renew my contract an sign yet another 2 year to get the phone rebates to have the phone for 99 $ maybe its just me dunno Im gonna call them today an see whats up with that.
