Installing Windows Mobile Live Search on BJ2...

I want to install Windows Mobile Live Search on my new BJ2,
but this is my first smartphone and I'm somehow hesitant.
I don't want to use the real-GPS part but just throught the internet.
I presume the install is very straightforward following the
instructions from the microsoft web site.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmob...ch/default.mspx
and http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmob...nloadpopup.html
So simply 1) open Internet Explorer, 2) go to ls.windowsmobile.com, and then 3) select appropriate download for your region and device.

Does downloading 3rd party software like this void the warranty?
What can go wrong?

Sorry, but i'm just a hesitant 1st time smartphone owner.

Installing 3rd party software will not void your warranty, but as with any software conflicts can occur. Most of the commercial software is very stable and has good support by the developer.

In regards to live search, just follow the directions for installation. It works great on the BJII. It will only access the GPS if you set that up. Under settings choose the GPS intermediate drive for the GPS, then under maps just select "center on gps" to have it use the gps functionality. If you don't want to use it don't select that option. Hope this helps.

Are my download web sites listed above correct
(ls.windowsmobile.com).
I read some stuff about COM ports etc. I will try it tonight.
Thanks.

Yep, those download sites will work. The only com port issue is choosing the one for the gps. Just use the intermediate driver and everything should work fine. The first time you try to use the gps make sure you are outside with clear line of site to the sky and give it around a minute or so to lock on. After that it tends to lock quicker and I get 5 or 6 satellites while in my house.

OK i'm going to try load tonight.
I don't want to use the GPS (for battery reasons) but just to have Live Maps
functioning via the IE browser.

With no GPS what com port do I need to chose and at what point/where
do you chose the port. Is the setting option chosen during the setup/install
process.

Google Maps today released a new version with cell tower Triangulation for determining position. Is Live Maps better than Goog Maps for basic use, like finding a location in your city or another city if traveling, and for interstate traffic updates within your city proper.

You won't have to worry about any com port configuration unless your are using the gps. Just install the software and start it up. Google and Live Search both have good features. I have both on my phone and use them both. I tend to like google better for mapping and sometimes Live Search for looking up items.

Is the new Goog application better with MyLocation/Triangualtion from cell towers now implemented in new version.

Can GoogMaps be downloaded from the phone or do you need to download to PC and the ActivcSync (on BJ2)

Are thes options for true GPS ('intermediate drive' and 'center on gps')
chosen during the installation process or are they menu options after the
application has been installed and run.

So the setup process is seamless and GPS options are chosen later if you
want true GPS.

Anything else I may encounter during installation that may be tricky.

Just install it and run. GPS will be disabled by default. Even if you decide to use the GPS later, you won't have to worry about COM ports.

If you don't want to use the built in GPS, the triangulation works.... but it's off by some distance. In that mode, GMaps tells you how far off it can be in text on the screen as well as a shaded circle. The text on mine usually says 1300 - 1800 meters, even thought the actual location dot is typically off by about a half a mile. Maybe not too bad on the interstate.... but not real useful for local navigation. The built in GPS actually looks to be slightly more accurate than the one in my Acura TL (both are within several feet of my actual location though).

Just go to www.google.com from your blackjack, the site will detect you're on a mobile device, and one of the options will be to download GMaps.

Cheers.

www.google.com/gmm from the phone browser.

I downloaded both Live Search and Goog Maps,
and for me Live Search is overall better,
more intuitive and fewer steps to perform numerous queries.
Goog may have more maps but Live Search gives more detailed text
directions and info.
