2008 Motorola/AT&T lineup (Leaks and Previews)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

This is a condensed version of what I posted in the Motorola section a while back. It's a scoop from a couple of friends in the industry on upcomming Motorola phones.

MotoRAZR2 with GPS
*Will be sold by AT&T, and will include Video Share. It will also have true GPS, theoretically allowing you to use whatever app you want to get your location on. (mGMaps) That assumes the Java apps are not locked by AT&T or other carriers to prevent GPS access. It will come packaged with Telenav.

*Will have the multifunctional external screen that the V8 and some V9m's have. You'll be able to read and reply to SMS, view MMS, and even browse the web. There will also be streaming video on the external display. My contact said youtube, but he may have meant CV.

*Launch due in January/February timeframe and is not likely to be red, as upper management wanted each model of RAZR2 to have a different color. This was always Moto's decision, not AT&T's.

V10 Flip-Phone(My name for conversational purposes, NOT official)
*Overall similar layout to the V8/9, but slightly narrower, roughly half an inch shorter (a little shorter than the original V3) and similar thickness. Front is dominated by a large 2"+ diagonal external screen with full touch sensitivity, ala iPhone. Most functionality not requiring text input ill be able to be done here. Internal screen will not be touch control and the keypad will be similar to the RAZR2

*Launch due in 2008, after the V9 with GPS. No date more specific than that. Possible HSPA/HSUPA connectivity at launch, but that detail is unconfirmed.

MotoROKR Z9 Slider
This phone is a similar color to the V9. It will feature 2Mp cam, with flash. It will still have the bumps on the keypad, as shown in the scoop from Boy Genius Report, but the dots themselves are just for tactile dialing, and are fairly effective. The actual keypad is standard Motorola fare. The Z9 will feature a full GPS chipset, as well as quad-band GSM and dual-band (850/1900) HSDPA. It will also feature, in a limited fashion, the adaptive keypad of the Motorola ROKR E8. The scroll pad will have hidden music controls. You can kinda see it below, but the arrows aren't lit up.

Launch is due in February, just after the V9 refresh is launched. It may be an AT&T exclusive, at least for a little while. It will most likely launch with the ROKR branding. A quick note for those looking at the BGR photos, the phone has slimmed up a bit from the early version. The current design is as thin and wide as the RAZR2 V9.

MotoQ with WiFi
The second scoop is a refresh for the Q9h. Nothing too dramatic, but the new Q will have built in WiFi. No idea what type, probably wireless-G. It may or may not have Windows Mobile 7. ETA is late Summer 2008.[/QUOTE]

I LOVE THAT ROKR.

Sorry sis, I'm stealing your upgrade in February!

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

I've got quite a few photos of the Z9. It's a very, very nice phone. It will utterly destroy the shine in every department imaginable (except price).

I can't post the photos without giving away clues as to who the photographer is, just trust me on it. It's sleek.

Posted by: thraven233

The only thing I worry about is that keypad.. I've heard those little dots are heat sensing devices and it would be more like touch sensitive keys. Is this true or are they actual press keys?

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

They're just bumps so you can dial without looking at the phone. The keypad is the same Motorola pad they've had since the V3i, metal coated with plastic. It's a good keypad, better than the V9, which kinda sucks.

Posted by: thraven233

Oh good.. Is there an estimated price for the rokr yet?

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

I have my estimate, which is based on past history of new Moto phones, and that price is far, far out the ***.

Think V9, V3i, or K1. Think 200-300 after any subsidy, 350-450 full retail.

Posted by: NOSintake

hmm, Q9 with wifi. i dont doubt it will come out, but look how long it took ATT to get the Q9. i remember talking about that back in like march, and it just now came out

Posted by: thraven233

They have been pumping out phones at a pretty decent rate lately, though. You gotta give them some credit =/

Posted by: freddyttt

great another slider

Posted by: IronCross

Thank god the new RAZR2 won't be that horrid mahogany with PINK backlights.

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

There is a chance it will still be red, maybe a slightly different color.

Please be black or silver.

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

The color really isn't THAT bad.

Posted by: thraven233

Whatever floats your boat I guess. I particullarly hate it.. if it came out in grey or black i'd probably get one.

Or even v3 silver.. I think that would look nice

Yes, but everyone has a gray or black phone. I can't wait until my unbranded Mahogany V9 arrives. I am getting impatient.

hmm.. true.. I guess i'm just a traditional kind of guy I do love white phones though.

There may be something wrong in my initial scoop. I can't say what, or even if most people would even notice the difference. It has to do with an exciting new AT&T service being tested right now and is planned for an early 08 launch.

Yeah, that's vague as all hell, but one has to walk a fine line.

You mean 2-way video calling?

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

Haven't heard of video calling, but other stuff more useful. I can't say what exactly, just that it's not video calling.

Someone in another thread posted a link to a wirefly page with a few Z9 renders, which look very close to the final version. Here's a shot of the keypad, which is largely the same as the BGR scoop, but with a few changes.

Posted by: thraven233

Those keys look like they would hurt your thumbs after typing a while. I couldn't see any texting fanatic liking those.. Hopefully they turn out better than they look =/

Posted by: IronCross

Anymore info on the phones coming out?

Colors, features, when, etc.?

I REALLY hope AT&T releases a V9 without PINK BACKLIGHTING. *vomit*

Well according to Engadget, "So we know that AT&T slipped its MediaFLO-based mobile TV launch from the end of 2007 out to early '08, but just how "early" are we talking? Well, "as early as possible," to be specific. That rather unhelpful statement is all that's coming out of AT&T for the moment regarding its go-live window for the service, saying that testing is going "very, very well" but that it wanted to take an extra timeout to "make sure the user experience is absolutely optimal."

I could be wrong but I think I heard somewhere that the Vu is going to be a mediaFLO device and this is my guess as to what ATnt-RSC is alluding to and the reason for it being delayed.

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

It's not mediaFlo, but another big service. As far as I know, the Z9 will not have MF support.

If you've ever used a V3xx or V9 keypad, it feels exactly the same.

Posted by: didefresh2006

I wouldn't mind a Razr 2 with GPS--but I may wait and get a Razr 2 when they go down in price. However, I will wait until the Blackberry 8310 goes refurbished at a good price and then get one for a backup to my 8300.

The slider looks nice too, but I hate slider phones.

I'm a little worried this phone is not going to come out now as expected. In the "Lets talk about phones 2008 " thread someone posted a supposed list of upcoming at&t phones for jan-feb they got from engadget and all the expected hansets were listed but no Moto V9? Just a Lavendar v3xx. Any Updates? Thanks!

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

There is a good chance that there will not be a hardware refresh for the V9. A software update will fix the outer screen and add additional features. Software updates are never trumpeted like new handsets. If there is a hardware update, it would be kept fairly lowkey as well, but I'm suspecting that it's just software for the V9. The door is still open for additional colors, assuming the V9 sells well enough.

The GPS will not be actual GPS, but aGPS, like Sprint and VZW. It may still be open to any application capable of using aGPS, like GMaps. This is not just a handset thing, as aGPS requires network support to work. Cingular opted against aGPS back in the day, and it appears they're backtracking to catch up in the lucrative location based service department. This is actually the biggest news I have. aGPS is big.

Posted by: DukeL

Meaning a software update for new V9's but not for people that own the current V9 right? I thought it was going to be like a V9i or something with a different color, features and all. Why would they quietly roll out a much more powerfull V9 without even advertising or showing off it's much better features?
Usualy they will give the device some type of different name.

Posted by: sin4me

if they don't do a hardware refresh, ideally they would release a software update that is backwards compatible with the current v9s on the market to enable the same functionality.

also, doesn't the v9 have agps already?

Seem 0032_0001

offset 49 bit 5 - AGPS Icon
offset 62 bit 4 - AGPS option in Phone Status
offset 15 bit 3 - Detailed Info. for AGPS

these edits supposedly work...

I seriously doubt that at&t will release a software update that enables the external screen functions on my existing V9. When in the past has at&t/moto ever done this? Not gonna happen. I think it is possible they would release a refresh as op had originally suggested with a diff. color casing as Moto intended. It just looks like it's not going to happen in January or Febuary.

As for the seem edit it might have enabled agps but at&t dosen't have a V9 compatible java navigation program yet so it dosen't do any good.

Posted by: sin4me

I agree that it's unlikely att/moto will release any updates for the exisiting v9; however, I'm hopeful that if the hardware remains the same on the v9i or whatever they decide to call it, someone will be able to make it work with our phones.

That's the scenaio I had with my old sprint samsung a900. A lot of the features of the phone were disabled (agps) or completely missing (t9 didn't learn words). A few months later they released the a900m which used the exact same phone hardware but the firmware was tweaked and ppl were able to put it on their existing a900's. Sure it was a pain and not supported by sprint/samsung but atleast it worked.

So is it the aGps you were referring to or something different ? If it wasnt then share a little insight here ?
