Can I make a BB work in place of my old phone?

Hey Folks,
Hoping someone here can help me. I have an old SEz520a flip phone - family plan no data add on. I was given a BlackBerry Curve 8300 that I would like to use as a phone and PDA (no email, no internet). I charged the battery and installed the SIM card from the z520 but the BB will not connect to the wireless network - any ideas??

Thanks for the help - Kev

Most likely the BB is locked. What carrier do you use and what is the carrier branding on the 8300?

I've got a Pearl that I am using the same way. I have no problem making and receiving calls. It gave me a message when I first turned it on that said it could not connect to the data network. I just assumed it did that because I didn't have a BB data plan. It works fine as a phone and pda and never had a problem connecting.

My Old phone is a Cingular unit and the BB is an AT&T phone.

The only issue I can think of is if you've got an older sim that's not a 64k???...and I'm not even sure that would be an issue. A Cingular phone and a newer AT&T (which the Curve is) are the same except for branding.

The sim chip in my old SE phone is a 64K one - just checked.
