Google Maps 2.0 and the Blackjack

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: bdcheung

Has anyone managed to get "My Location" working for the Blackjack (original, not BJ2)?

I'm in Washington, DC and keep getting the message "Your current location is temporarily unavailable"

Posted by: chudy2

this feature kicks major a$$!!

it works fine on my bj2 and on my se w810

it might be a problem with your tower not being in the database (they need the tower location to triangulate)

Posted by: bdcheung

Tower database could be the issue. Hmmm....

Posted by: Quake97

It doesn't work on my Blackjack. I get a "Your location is temporarily unavailable" error message. It could be my location since I'm way out in the burbs. There might not be enough towers around here to triangulate anything.

Is the new Goog maps better than Microsoft's Live Search maps.

Posted by: Kevad007

I would not say better, but it is faster now than before and has some new funtionality, and each has strengths that are a bit different Each will have differing opinions, or use both at times

Same problem here in Orange County, CA get the same message about the My Location on my BJ I with WM5, its not working now for over 3 hours and at none of the locations I tried while driving around. Anyone got any ideas or are any BJ users getting My Location to work yet, although it is Beta?

Posted by: boone

Mine doesn't work here in Richmond, VA. Hopefully this will be taken care of by the time it comes out of beta.

This version stinks it doesnt have the "locate a business" feature

Posted by: chudy2

well it seems like the locator feature worked at my office but it didnt work at all on the way home or in boston/watertown/allston area...

i'll check to see if it works again at my work but it's strange it would work at a suburb and none of boston area (that i was in tonight) worked...

Usually Google Beta's are rock solid....not this time though!

Not working here in the Dallas/Fort Worth TX area, either - on my BJ 1.
By the way, has anyone succeeded in getting this to load to the Storage Card? Seems like the install cab allows the option, but it actually installs in main memory. Reg entries show it as being on the storage card, but it isn't..... The map cache takes up available memory....
Has anyone got a workaround?

I had the same issue with the last stable release of Google Maps Mobile: Though I told it to install to the storage card, everything still went to main memory.

I haven't found a workaround yet.

Check out this PC World Article:

http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,1...es/article.html

"In order to use the service, phone owners must download a free application from Google. The application will work on BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Symbian phones as well as many phones that support Java. A few notable exceptions include the Samsung Blackjack, Moto Q and Palm Treo 700W, which don't support the APIs (application programming interfaces) Google requires to find cell towers, Lee said."

Posted by: NauticaX

The My Location doesn't seem to work on Cingular 3125 either.

Posted by: chudy2

so the non-gps my location feature works in my office, yet not in the office parking lot. and in general is very spotty. it worked in 2 locations out of a couple dozen tries at different places....

Posted by: mcapiro

From the Google Maps Support Site:

If you have a Java-enabled (J2ME) device, BlackBerry or Windows Mobile device, you can easily check whether or not My Location (beta) is available. Just to go "Help" > "About" from the application. If the box contains "myl: N/A," it means your device isn't reporting a cell.

I tried it on a T-Mobile Dash last night and wasn't able to get it to work either. I will look to see if it says N/A as well. Just checked on my Q9h and it says N/A

There is no work around for this issue. And it is this way since day 1. The reason is that Google Maps will install a hook into your contacts. If you bring out the Contacts->Menu, you will see the menu item to locate your contact (if address is valid) on Google Maps. Such hook must be installed on main memory. Otherwise, your phone will be hosed if your storage card is taken out or non-working.

Posted by: bdcheung

Seems like it doesn't work with the i607. Time to start finding out 1) why; and 2) how to make it work!

Well, that explains why it does not work on either of my phones.

i wonder if this will be fixed with bj1 wm6 update?

Posted by: mightyy77

Well, the app loads and works fine on my BJ1 with WM6, but My Location says my current location is temporarily unavailable. Wonder if that's the app not working properly or just google not having data for my area.

Posted by: jh811

no luck here in orange county, CA but friend in LA county reported it to work

Posted by: siliconvalley78

Mine worked just fine on the BlackJack. When i first installed it it didn't work, but subsequent tries yielded the program locating me.

Thanks, Foxbat121. Makes sense. My beef is with the cache, more than anything. Would very much like the map cache to be stored on the card, as the BJ has limited memory......

Siliconvalley78....Location is working on your BJ1???? Did you do anything to get it to work? I am sure there are many BJ1 owners out there who would like to get this feature working. Are you on WM5 or 6, and if 6, what version? Please share, so we can all enjoy this feature....thanks.

on the bj1...when you go to help->about and then the bottom of the page...what does it say for myl:????

is it N/A or is it some long number?

Posted by: siliconvalley78

I'm WM6, latest ROM available. Not sure why it worked, but it got me nailed down within my development. Nothing out of the ordinary, lol.

so on bj1 with wm6 when you go to help->about and then look at the bottom of screen you get 'myl:XXX:XXX...' instead of 'myl:N/A'?

that would be promising news for bj1 owners and antoher reason to upgrade to wm6

Posted by: JDyn84

I have WM6 installed and the My Location does not work for me either. However, I'm roaming on an AT&T partner, so that may have something to do with it as well.

I also lament the removal of "search for businesses" feature too. I guess I"ll have to use Live Search for that...a pity because I prefer the Gmaps.

on this article : http://www.computerworld.com/action...8&taxonomyId=16

ok, so for anyone with a BJ1 if you scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN...the last line in the "about screen" should say myl: and then followed by either numbers or N/A....

Posted by: siliconvalley78

I've got the N/A version.

All,

I travel quite frequently.... ok... all the time. I've tried Google Maps My Location on both my BJ and BJ2. I've also run GPS with it on both phones as well (in the case of the BJ1, I used a bluetooth GPS receiver).

My notes:
Roaming or not, My Location doesn't work everywhere. BOTH my BJ1 and BJ2 work consistently in the same places where it works, and don't work consistently where they don't work. I live in "Silicon Valley" and My Locations works, but it's usually about a half mile off (for some reason, it pretty consistently puts me about .5 miles further south than I really am). At this very minute, I'm in Indianapolis In. My location doesn't work on either device here.

The easiest way to get the GPS to NOT WORK (on either device) is to turn on My Location (working or not). Select "Use GPS" OR "My location"... never both. It's not every time, but generally turning on both at the same time screws up the GPS.

YMMV, Hope it helps.
D.

Its working or not working seems to have a lot more to do with you having a 3G signal vs. EDGE than anything else. It seems as though the tower IDs for 3G are different than those for EDGE and the 3G ones are not in the tower database yet or something. People have stated that it works fine in EDGE areas on their phone, but if they have a 3G signal, they get the "temporarily unavailable" stuff. If you look at the 'About' feature and it says myl:somenumbershere, the feature works on your phone. If you are getting "temporarily unavailable", it means the tower information isn't in the DB.

Posted by: mdntblu

So does anyone have any solid info on how this works? I can't really get to any Edge towers since everything around me is 3g. Once in a great while I'll slip into an Edge tower? So does that mean my location will never work on google and my BJ1?

Posted by: osxfreak

Running a BJ1 and WM6 (latest version). I live in Chicago and it's a NO GO here.. I just downloaded the 2.0.0.12 version and I'm showing the myl:N/A as well.

Shame as I was really looking for a way to use GPS on the phone with out buying the GPS receiver.

Is there any other Working Options out there like TomTom6?

My assumption is that M$ live search won't do it with out a GPS receiver either.

Remember folks.... "My Location" is NOT, repeat NOT GPS!!!!

It uses triangulation from cell phone towers and has a margin of error.... usually 1800 meters (over a mile) by what I see. A GPS is at most off a few feet.

FWIW: The GPS receiver sold by ATT works great, it's SMALL, and you can use it with ANY Bluetooth enabled device. I like using that one to track my position on my laptop as I criss-cross the US on airline flights (United and a couple of others allow the GPS... even if they don't technically allow Bluetooth).

Cheers.

Posted by: DLF

It's probably been said in another thread, but the BJII works fine with Google Maps Mobile. Now if Yahoo! Go 2.0 would just use the GPS, all would be well.

As for "My Location," I wish they'd used a different term for cell-tower locating, as "A-GPS" for "Assisted-GPS" makes you think this function depends on the GPS h/w, when it clearly doesn't. The "Assisted" part means "while GPS hardware is taking its sweet time getting a cold fix on your position, I'll assist its slow speed by telling the application requesting the data where your nearest cell tower is."

Posted by: dkhomdds

Buy a cheap Bluetooth reciever I got one off ebay for about 25 bucks, a "Globalsat BT359" works well with GMM (but with some needed tweaks to the registry) and without any tweaks needed WLS works well also out of the box. I also have Route 66 v6 running but its a bit slow on my i607. But it works and you do not need any data service for r66. So for 25 bucks you can forget about waiting for google to support "my location" via "cell tower" yes its off about 1 mile, I tried it on a blackberry curve on t-mo and was it way off!!!! I guess it will be ok just to get the general area of where you are but its way off!!!

Posted by: swissarmyca

My Location now works on my BJ all of a sudden. Do not know why but it could be due to the fact that I upgraded to the office WM6 version. Anybody else got the same result?

Posted by: Kevad007

Yep, it works now in the Samsung new WM6 ROM just out!

Posted by: mdntblu

What new ROM? Where can I find it?

I have a BJ1. Is it for that?

Yeah, just check one of the other threads on the subject, not too hard to find.

Edge towers are everywhere a 3g tower is, your phone is just programmed to choose the higher connection (3G) in this case. You can browse to your windows directory on your phone and use the bandsel.exe app to choose which type of connection you want and force your phone to use Edge(GSM) instead of Auto which is the default setting.

Posted by: Foxbat121

Even with the latest WM 6.0 ROM on my BJ, my location only works if I force the phone into GSM mode. It does not work if my phone is in 3G mode.

Posted by: bigdilvey

Same here. I dumbed it down to Edge and my location worked... 3g is a no go for now. atleast for me in eastern WA.

Posted by: Philmatic

Yeah, works fine in the Official AT&T WM6 rom that was just posted yesterday.

Posted by: sfiorito

mine started working after I installed official WM6 update last night. it works in 3G areas and I'm running GMM 2.0.0.12, the about screen also gives me numbers instead of N/A.

You guys could also try Navizon. Same thing, but it's been around longer and so may have a bigger CellID database.

Posted by: nunya53

I'm in a 3G area and I have all numbers after myl, but still no available location.

Posted by: cingular#1

YES!! today i finally got wm6 official rom to work with google maps my location. Dont even try it on wm5.

Posted by: Kevad007

Da_G has reported finding that in order for MY LOCATION to work in 3G you first have to get an Edge signal and then check your My Location once while getting Edge. Then on the same power cycle it will work in either 3G or Edge. My testing has followed this same pattern. I do get My Location working in 3G all over Orange County but only after I have gone to Edge first, Open Google and request My Location! Maybe it varies in different areas and depends on how the towers are set up and/or within the database etc....or its a bug within the stock UCHA1 ROM by Samsung, but I can confirm Da-G's analysis of the functionality, and of course this only works with the new WM6 UCHA1 ROM upgrade or the most recent Da-G cookins from the same.

Posted by: cingular#1

hmm i just ran my location on 3g..and it worked fine

This got it working for me, although I'm not sure if I have to force Edge once first after every battery change...I'll let you know and hopefully there is a fix coming soon.

Well, it could be a tower by tower thing, out here in Southern California, we have 3G which is necessary for Video Share, but AT&T says it works in all 3G areas but here. Go figure! Our 3G coverage is like swiss cheeze, and then when we get it, its not the same as other parts of the USA. Hopefully we go back to the lower frequency with 3G and many towers switch on Feb. 19th, after the analog thing is over. Cingular#1 are yu able to turn off your phone in a strong, solid 3G area, and then turn it on and boom right off the bat you get My Location, that just is not happening here in Orange County so far, but I have only tried it so many towers, home, work etc...? I saw another user indicate that it may not work if you are in one place for a long time and/or close to one tower for a long time, it does not get signals from a 2nd or 3rd tower to allow triangulation, but for me Da_G's findings seem to fit my pattern more.

I can confirm the same - I switched from 3G to Edge - My Location worked. Then switched back to 3G and My Location continued to work - have not verified the power cycle down or battery switch yet (one in the same).

Is the current support something that Google has implemented just for Google Maps? Is there any way to get GPS support in Live Search on the Blackjack I running the latest Da_G version? Thanks!

Do you mean the "My Location" feature in Google Maps? That isn't GPS but rather cell tower triangulation.

If you need real GPS with the BlackJack1 I'm afraid the only way is with a bluetooth GPS dongle. That will work with Google Maps or Live Search.
