Converting AT&T Tilt to HTC firmware?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: chipdoo

Hi all,
I did a search for this question but haven't found anything in stone. I'm interested in purchasing a Tilt from AT&T with a 2 year contract.
But I would want to switch the firmware back to the Manufacturers firmware as AT&T usually loads it with a bunch of crap.
Anyway to do this and if so, how is it done? Sorry if I'm blind and didnt see this out there but want to see if its possible before purchasing.

Thanks!

If you don't want AT&T's customizations, do a hard reset on the device. During it's initial boot you'll see a prompt that says the device will be customized in three seconds. At that point, perform a soft reset BEFORE the customizations start. The device will boot as usual, without installing any of AT&T's applications.

I did this on my Tilt and it works perfectly.

i bought an unlocked tilt and i am considering doing a hard reset. my concern is that it might get locked back to at&t and i don't have the unlocked code for it. can this happen?

Posted by: omaralt

no, once its unlocked, its unlocked. no hard-reset or flashing will lock it up again. worse case scenario, you should still have your unlock code, but you wont need it

i suggest using a different rom other than ATT's rom. its alot faster and some come with added things, like HTC home, The cube thing, among other things. but the best feature that different roms give is the increased speed.

i am currently using dutty's no. 7b and it works like a charm.

that site is pretty advance.... darn. ..

so that Kaiser flashing method would work on HTC TOUCH?

what is CID unlocking? and they call the phone firmware "ROM"??

CID unlocking allows you to flash any compatiable ROM on your device IE if the handset is ATT normally only a ATT ROM can be flashed if you CID unlock you can put a Dopod etc

ROM is the Operating System of the Handset.

There is a dedicated Forum at that site specifically for the Touch i would read all you can about flashing in the Touch Forum just to make sure the procedures are the same.

I've been unsuccessful on flashing my Tilt but I did the reset after the hard reset when it has a 3 second countdown to loading all ATT's crap on it. That seems to have helped out, Tilt is running great!

to flash you must install hardspl then download a rom that you would like and install that.

This Hard Reset/soft reset is supposed to eliminate much of the bloatware from loading. I have put a fair amount of 3rd party apps on the phone and set it up as I liked. I backed up it with Sprite.

If I Hard/Soft reset, will the phone need to be restored from the storage card via Sprite or will I be good to go?

My understanding if you hard reset, you will need to reload all your stuff again or restore it from your backup.

If I have done a full Sprite back up and restore it after the hard reset will I be sabotaging my efforts? In other words, will the back up restore all of the same bloat?

if.....

you did full Sprite Backup and did a hard reset (without ROM change):
- when you restore using Sprite backup..your device would go back to the exactly to the point that it was when you backed it up

you did full Sprite Backup and AFTER that you upgraded/Changed ROM:

if you did that some software such as Sprite will ask you if you upgraded the rom or just hard reset, but sometimes it won't let you restore certain features like databases (this is known when upgrading from let say Windows MObile 6.0 to 6.1). In any case, if i flash a different rom than what i had before (when i made backup with Sprite) i will not do full restore. I will only restore contacts, messages, emails, my docs etc but system settings and anything system or databases i will leave unrestored.
The reason for this is that different roms have different tweaks, registry settings and they sometimes come with more or less software, doing a full backup restore will load previous registry settings or windows mobile files that have been modified on purpose in the new ROM therefore either causing conflicts with some software or device performance

btw those who want to flash cooked roms onto your tilts:

i have flashed Dutty's ROM 6.1 on my tilt without any problems (well except the HardSPL and white screen problem (nothing major) just took a minute to go around but anyway..->) and for those who try to figure out how to get settings for your ineternet etc.. well after i hard reset the tilt with the new Dutty's rom, the first thing that comes up is HTC connection wizard or whatever you call it, it will ask you that it has detected AT&T sim card and if you would like to load AT&T settings for sms, mms, voicemail, and internet, pretty sweet stuff if you ask me

That is what I wanted to know. Thanks. So, the programs that I have loaded into the phone with whatever settings I used would have to be reloaded and reset manually....SPB stuff, Google Maps, updated camera, FileBarricader and all that kindastuff.

Posted by: linuXshock

yeah thats what i do and it always works then after that i do full backup after i got everything set up correctly, so if im not gonna change my rom and in case my phone crashes or something i can always do a full restore using that backup

I have a tilt on the way, can someone give a link or tell me where to get just the standard TyTn II rom? i dont know if i trust those cooked roms.

Or, a nice comparison, or explanation of the "best" cooked rom versus standard htc tytn II rom, would be much appreciated.

that xda developers site is very intimidating for noob. im a Symbian user, but am venturing off the path a bit.

thanks!

ok, when I get the Tilt I should soft reset it. which is resetting the tilt before the at&t **** starts installing. after the soft reset, will the phone be usable? will I be able to make calls and surf the net, while deciding on which rom I want and such?

cooked roms usually come with preloaded very usefull software that wouldn't come with the original HTC rom. Plus TyTN II has second camera so to be honest i dont know if there would be some extra menus etc if you flash it to your Tilt

yes, but you have to realize .. you have to HARD Reset the phone, it will clear all settings etc, then reboot and then when it starts up again after a short "Welcome Wizard" that alligns your screen you know.. tap here tap there, after that it will start customizing..thats when you have to soft reset.
After that the phone will be fine, yhou'll be able to make calls, send sms, but when it comes to browsing the web .. well the settings for AT&T will be erased so you might have to manually enter them. For me.. when i installed Dutty's Cooked rom .. it came with HTC network setup tool, it automatically detected that i have AT&T and it automatically set the internet network settings to AT&T
