GIF downloads converting to PNG error

Every time I try to download gif files from a WAP or Web site thru the browser in my phone, the file is downloaded, but converts to a PNG format. Does anyone know why? Or know how to fix this?
The biggest headache, the GIF I am downloading is animated, but when it downloads, the converted file PNG format, is a still image.
Any ideas?

Find the same picture on the web, download via your computer, then send as animated .gif to your phone.
