SOLVED: Ringtones on a Rogers TU720 Shine

I was unable to find a single post with instructions on how to add ring tones to the overly locked down LG Shine (TU720) from Rogers. So here they are, step-by-step.

Requirements:

Latest BitPim software from www.bitpim.org (tested with 1.0.2)
LG phone tools software (provided in box)
USB cable

Instructions:

Install software listed above
Hook up phone
Launch BitPim
BitPim should show "Other CDMA phone on COMx" (where x is the COM port being used)
Choose Edit, Settings
Change Phone Type to "LG-VX8700" (this is the CDMA version Shine)
Click OK to close
Choose View, View Filesystem
Click the Filesystem icon
Click the expand button beside "/"
It will say "Retrieving" for a minute or two
Expand to the following directory: /LGAPP/Media/Midis/RingTone
Add whatever MP3 ringtones you want by right-clicking on RingTone folder and selecting "New File ..."

And a few final things to note:

You can also modify sounds in other folders but you can generally only replace existing ones (ie. the new files must have the same name)
There is still a size restriction on the ringtone MP3s so you can't use a full song (I don't know what the size limit is)
You can bypass the Java security restrictions by modifying the .pol files under /LGAPP/Media/Java/cert/

I downloaded the bitmap and installed it and it can't find my phone. I am sure I am doing something wrong.

u have to select LG VX8700 manually... cux when u plug it in it just says "Other phone found", bitpim don't have LG TU720

b) it happened to me once.. when i plugged it in it wont read it.. i just unplugged and replugged again and select find device or what not.. and it found it as "other CDMA phone"

also... i was searching around and i found the games under Java/ams/M008 or what ever... wonder how we can put our own games in like this.. hmmm

hmm thats weird.. are u accessing ur files through "view filesystem"?
for me when i go there there is the "\" windsor was talking about.. and all i do from here is just double click it =S
did u check ur ports to make sure if ur computer is even detecting ur phone?

man feel sry for u.. seems lik u always have bad luck wit ur lg shine

It just worked
FILE SIZES 302837 (I would guess 305000 MAX)
will work, anything higher wouldn't
as I have tried with 308000kb and it hasn't work.

no clue gurl.. don't think hardware upgrade should mess it up as its still a "shine" firmwire
like bitpim actually reads the TU720 assuming its VX8700.. so i would think a hardware upgrade to TU720 wouldnt b that big of a difference since its not reading it as a TU720 to begin wit ne wayz...

i dun even have pc suite installed on my computer..

i seem to be getting the same error, and i can never sync my phone on the computer using the PC suite i alway get a failer

error when Sync: does anyone one know what this is? can never get it to work and could this effect me from getting Bitpim to work?

A few comments for the few people who don't seem to be getting it to work (like cindylou):

You don't need the LG PC Suite running or even installed, just the USB driver (which is installed automatically with PC Suite)
I initially had trouble with Vista so I've only gotten this to work properly on Windows XP
If there are any other COM port devices connected it may detect the wrong port, you might want to try manually setting the port
You should probably try getting the phone to work with PC Suite in general first. At least if it doesn't work LG should provide support for it!
There was a question on warranty; yes this probably would void the warranty so never tell Rogers or LG you are doing this, AND erase any custom settings if you need to take it for service. (I back up all settings before changing anything)

Glad to see it's working for most people!

Yes it works with pc suite. I had the manual and when i got to filesystem the botton says its looking for the phone files in it and when I go to expand it says retreiving then after a minute or 2 it comes up with the error

decrease the bitrate, i have a 4min song at 600 kb (wma though).

for people converting MP3s, try mediacoder. open sourced software, can do more than just dropping bitrates (converts video formats, audio formats, bitrate change....)

I know you say that it detected your phone but still did you make sure that you did the edit settings and changed it to the LG-VX8700 before doing the fileststem> Just checking cause I forgot that to the first time

Hey guys im giving away my phone to my sis and she ask is it locked to rogers but i bought it from rogers with a plan im not really sure what locks mean so can anyone tell me if my phone is locked to rogers or not? because i think lock mean is when u steal a phone from anywhere you will have to get it unlock so u can use it.

I changed the name of the alert message tone to mesasge01.mp3 and it did not work either.

Just trying my video player on the phone and it doesn't want to play mp4 files, not from here (www.mp4point.com) anyway. They are just clips. Is there something that needs to prepped on the phone first?

You have to replace an existing file in the message alert folder. It doesn't seem to accept new files. I replaced a couple of them myself and have custom alert tones working.

does anyone read the rest of the threads. you have to rename the tone you want the original then, replace with new tone. like rename it to message.mp3 and copy over the original ring tone.

may want to backup the message tones first

I have the Bell Lg8700 and Ive been trying to get this personal ringtone thing for a while now, i have finally got the driver for it so it can show up in the port list and now that it does i follow all the step but when I retrieve the files on the phone i dont have /LGApp/etc.

Let's go to download "MP3 TO RINGTONE GOLD" and then use the "Big mp3s

to small" function to compress your ringtone, but make sure you cut your

mp3 songs before you do that.It should work.

Anyone with a non acceptable content error; change/update your encoder. I had an old version of LAME and I updated it and now they work.

I just got the phone LG SHINE TU720 and i downloaded the program, Bitpim, i did everything everything and it wont work.....
At first, my pc wouldnt detect my phone, even with the LG software, so then as my phone was connected with the USB to my pc, it would say something with MASS STORAGE...so i canceled it on my phone, and suddenly, the LG SHINE software detected my phone.....so, that was a relief, thinking that now the program bitpim would recognize it as well...but nop, nothing.
whats going on ??? i selected LG-VX8700 in EDIT SETTINGS, and it still wont do nothing.........
help plz !!

i looked at the video on youtube, helped me a lil, but now the problem is the port....
the lg mobile ports are not available...i think thats what screwing things up.
the lg software detects my phone, but bitpim doesnt....i tried all the ports, they are not available.

PORTS NOT AVAILABLE:
LG MOBILE USB MODEM
LG MOBILE USB SERIAL PORT (COM9)

Your operating system shows this driver and port is correctly configured and a device attached
It was not possible to open this port
This is a modem connection

Does anybody know how to silence the little sound when you delete a txt messsage or save a contacts entry, etc? I can probably just replace the current sound with a blank sound file if I knew where to change it....

you don't need the lg software to be on when you're connecting to bitpim. I have problems connecting sometimes as well, but it always works when my phone is off. Turn your phone off, plug it in and load up bitpim, see if it recognizes it.

i had the same problem on my phone did everything so my only option was to send the phone back to lg via rogers to tell them about the problem phone not dectecting on my pc its a softewar issue with the phone i suggest you send it back aswell......i think the messed up the phone when they installed all that rogers crap on the phone

Finally figured it out, turns out you can do it on the phone itself. If anyone else is wondering, its under "Other Alert Tones" in the "Alert Type" menu - just put it to silent.

Now, if only there was a way to customize the menu's........

I got everything to work but for sum reason after I reboot my phone, the ringtone that I added DISAPPEARS/VANISHES/ is gone....

I followed ur exact steps and I followed others just to be sure and everything worked fine till this point.

Once I added the ringtone and tried to "Set As" a message appeared sayin "NON-DRM PROTECTED FILE".

I read on a another forum post that all I had to do was "reboot/turn on and off" the phone.

I did that and for sum odd reason the mp3/ringtone that I added is gone!

WHY!?!?!

ok so this is for the ppl who can't seem to get there phones dectec on thier pc's i found this on another web site i did it and it worked

Sadly I can't post links *Scowl*, however I can tell you that I found them at LGE.com, go to here (remove spaces of course):

Then in the search fields:

Category:
1) Mobile Phones
2) Select by Carrier
3) Verizon

Model No.: 8000

Now seatch, and download the one titled LGUSBModemDriver_Eng_Ver_4.5.exe.

That's the USB modem drivers you want.

its the drivers you need for the phone to work on your pc just download it and run it then just plug your usb to your phone via pc and just follow the instuctions . when you see new hardwear found

Does anyone know how to make the ringtone louder? I used audacity but I could barely hear the sound on the phone. It's ok on the computer though. It's only the ones ive created that is like this.

simple get the messege tone you want and just overwrite the exsisting tone that simple.....

I just got my shine a few days ago, I have read everything on this thread and applied it but my shine still wont register on my computer. It is on data service, hooked up with a usb and I have installed the drivers a few times but no success. can anyone help?

I did, thats why i'm so lost. nothing seems to be working. and to top it all of just now (without me messing with it) it has reset to emergency mode so i can't do anything with it.

ok sorry to be a incovience but i am having problems...
i have all software installed, lastest version of bitpim and everything. i remove my mem chip so i dont go into mass storage, and make sure i am connected on the suite and it is running b4 opening bitpim, once bitpim is open i click settings and change it to the right 1, now when i click find phone and it finds 1 but wen i click veiwsystem and try to click the plus sign it says retrieving for about half a second and goes away, now i have realised that when i go to suite and connect, it says i connected to com6 on bitpim it finds another one com7, it always seems to find 1 that is 1 com ahead of wut i really am on.. this is very confusing lol but would really like some help here, i read everything so far and nothing has solved this, although i dont seem to understand when some1 says to make it a data service please help me

go to your conection settings and change it to data not mass storage bitpim should open it then......

I went with Telus(I just figured they're retarded) and it didn't came with the cables and many of my friends got the same thing as me.

I registered to thank you folks. THANKS. I have a LG 8700, wouldn't connect to my pc. Found inst to dl bitpim. Found inst on this forum to remove micro sd chip and download driver [see post #91].

I HAD TO RECONNECT THROUGH A DIFFERENT PORT on my pc to get it to work. Using the same port didn't work, nor did a different port I tried earlier that failed the install. Something worked, all exicited. Failed driver message or something like that did not come up immediately like other attempts.

Went to bitpim selected vx8700 because it went default to vx9900 and the file posted wasn't there, file system then expand.

brew
mod
10889 then clicked on
ringtones

and that was it. I have no idea what the heck I'm doing but it worked so a big thnaks guys. I didn't have to erase, it added the file to the top of the ringtone list in an orange color not green fyi.

i've also added a custom tone for my Text Messages

not very hard, only thing you have to replace the current tones... but i created a backup folder in the txt message folder and just copied all the factory ones there.

I wish Rogers and LG would just allow this **** to be done without having to hack the phone...

Hello all, i'm new here, and just purchased the Shine today. However, i'm using Bell Mobility, so i'm not sure if all of what you all have posted applies to me. But I don't have PC Suite, or any other software, as none came with the phone. Where and how can I wnload/install any drivers, or any other software that may be neccessary for me to use the method outlined in the original posters topic ? Any other additional info you may feel I may need, please feel free to enlighten me.

I too have tried this program on my LG Shine(It AT@T though) and the program doesn't see the phone. I check the setting and it lists several "Com Ports" and one mentions the Shine associated to a Port but it lists this Port as "Unavailable"? What am I doing wrong?

1. what OS are you running on your computer?
2. have you installed the USB drivers from LG's website (the ones for the Verizon VX-8700)?
3. have you restarted your computer since you installed everything, just in case?
4. does BitPim see any phone connected (not only the CU720)?

I finally got the BitPim Program to work with my AT&T CU720. I had the Data CD from my USB cable and I installed the drivers listed for VX8000. Once I did this,removed my Memory Card from the phone and rebooted the BitPim showed my phone on Com 13 and I was able to get to the files and Manually load my ringtones. This is my wife's new phone and she it happy and when "Momma is Happy everyone is Happy"..

Check on your Computer under My Computer and Device Manager and see under Com Ports one if one is listed while your Data Cable is connected. If so,go to BitPim and under Settings, Browse for Ports Manually and see if you see the Com port and set it. Also if you have a Memory card in your phone try removing it then connect the phone to cable.

You can bypass the Java security restrictions by modifying the .pol files under /LGAPP/Media/Java/cert/

The isn't the answer to end all but it's the best I can come up with so far.

OK - so if you're like me you want to use a full mp3 as a ringtone but are frustrated with the 'allowable' length. Here's a *sorta* work around:

Using BitPim (I'm using ver 1.0.5 with an LG TU720 Shine), navigate to \\lgapp\media\midis\ring tone.

Now, open Windows expl. and locate a song you already KNOW works as a ring tone on your phone - right click on it and choose 'copy'. You can rename this to whatever you want. For me, I use a variation of the actual filename I will be using to keep it less confusing for me.

Back in BitPim, on a blank white area within "ring tone", right click and choose "New File" then navigate to the copy of the file you just created and click ok.

Now go to your phone and in Audio/settings/..ring tones, set that file as your ring tone

Once again back in BitPim, right click that file and choose "Overwrite" and navigate to the file you actually want to set as your ring tone and choose ok.

These steps *MUST* be done in this order or it won't work.

Oh.. and the reason it's only a "sorta" workaround - you can use this file as long as you like but if you try to set a different ring tone, you can't go back to this one. Your phone will then realize it's too large and won't set. You're back to square one if you want it back.

This STILL doesn't work for me, i keep getting Non-Acceptable Content, MP3 To Ringtone Gold works for me, but i'm looking for another way to get my ringtones to work, preferably for free, anyone know what I'm doing wrong, thanks for your help..

Damn it all!
I just discovered this, and tried it, and still I fail, the world is against me.
When I plug my phone in and run the program, it just says that there is no phone detected at all, so I try to manually set the port or what ever, and it gives me COM1 as the only option, no matter which USB port that I have it plugged into, so I'm assuming that this is just not working.
I took a look for any new drivers for the phone, and from my efforts, I found no new ones so I'm assuming my phone is up to date. Though I don't know what this pc suite is that I heard a few people mention throughout this forum.
My computer reads the phone, it says LG something or other when I plug it in and says new hardware detected. I start the program up though and nothing!!
this is frustrating, I have a rather unique taste in music, so it's nearly impossible to find ring tones on the rogers site that fit my taste in music, nor do I want to pay like 4$ for a portion of a song that would only cost 99 cents to download a full song.

does the phone have to be unlocked? i found on the Bitpim FAQ's that Brew file locks sometimes cause this to happen

my bluetooth cant receive files for some strange reason so i was gonna take it back to rogers. i already changed back all the java games to what they were so no issues there.

also any images that came with it as well. i wouldn't make this a complete priority though.

Do you guys know if this method of putting ringtones on your phone work for the LG VU (i think its Cu920 for rogers), it works perfectly fine with the Shine, and im getting the Vu this week, so please reply asap, and thanks again for everything

no wrries about that, with the VU u don't have to do anything special. no special programs required. Just as long as the files are under 300kb in size, you can apply them as ringtones. My brother has the VU, so that's how i know. Have fun with the new phone.

one thing u should try, try hooking the phone up to a different usb port...i was gettin the same problem for a bit until i jus tryed a different port.

Ok really random, I don't own one but a friend does. He's on AT&T. Does the phone being unlocked have anything to do with not being able to put ringtones on? I had an unlocked Chocolate a while back and it was super easy to put ringtones on...
