Life after iPhone?

(I think) I'm going to pawn my iPhone and wait for the next version because I know I'll want it. What did you move onto after the iPhone?

I'm moving to Verizon in about 4 hours. I'm thinking about getting the Voyager. AT&T just sucks nearly everwhere I go.

Posted by: bootycancer

After seeing some of the hands on vids on youtube, I may be going as well. I've been a Cingular customer for 8 years. I get good reception with Cingular/ATT, but that Voyager looks slick.

It'll be nice to get back to a feature rich phone.

Posted by: thadoggfather

Oy. I'm keeping AT&T service. It's good everywhere I've been. And I can't go back to CDMA, for my needs I need a SIM card. But I'm not trying to turn this into a flamewar.

Posted by: toomer

The obvious choices are N95, Tilt, whatever the latest Blackberry is, etc. I guess it all depends on what is most important to you? (i.e.: email? 5mp photos? other?)

8 out of 11 in this poll that returned ... ended up buying back again afterward: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1265185

yeah ill probably come back to it when the 2nd gen comes out. No *REAL* complaints with the current gen except I know how Apple makes its products and I'm gonna feel like a schmuck when the 2nd gen drops.

Posted by: Ophidian

That gen 2 is far off. Like a year... at the least 6 months.

Posted by: bootycancer

*oops* somehow I posted in the wrong thread.

All we know is that it's going to be sometime next year. That could mean 5 weeks, but I highly doubt that it will be that quick. Saying it will be at least 6 months is pure speculation on your part.

Considering the processes they have to go through like the FCC... Not really.

Its all speculation anyway so to sell your phone cause you think it could be out in 5 weeks is kinda stupid.

Posted by: djdownhill

I just got rid of mine this week. Do I miss it? Blah....not really. When Gen 2 comes out I'll prolly pick one up as well. But there IS life after the iPhone......

The FCC approval process only takes 2-3 months. Who's to say Apple hasn't already submitted the 3G iPhone to the FCC. And contrary to what some people think, the FCC only releases their data to the public after it's approved. Not before or during the testing.

I sold, picked up a Nokia E90 and have now re-bought an iPhone. sigh.

Sold mine and am buying a tilt. I'll miss safari, but gps, mms, video recording, voice dialing and tethering more then make up for it. Plus, opera 4 looks like it's catching up to safari

Posted by: cd1000

I moved to an 8310..used tilt and moto q9h. 3g iphone will be interesting, but so will 3g blackberry. So many phones.

They're not even close if you ask me. I had Opera 4 on a Helio Ocean and it sucked (the Ocean AND Opera, actually). Nothing beats the iphone's safari IMO.

Posted by: xbox360gamer

I ditched my first iPhone about a month after launch day. this was because I kept getting lemon after lemons and I finally had enough. I then tried a couple other phones for a couple weeks which made me realize how "blah" every other phone was when compared to the iPhone.

that's when I decided to give the iPhone a second chance which I'm glad I did. this time I found a 100% "keeper" and I've been happy ever since. to me, no other phone compares to the iPhone. so until someone makes a true "iPhone killer", then it's going to be hard to break me from my iPhone.

my very good friend at AT&T gave me a Tilt on day one. I ditched it not even 24 hours later after realizing how much of slow pig it was (UI wise) compared to my iPhone. that and the fact that my Tilt randomly locked up on my three times on the very same day.

that Tilt was a joke.

The only real comparison i could make between the two is flicking, dragging and double clicking to zoom. When i saw a video of that, i was pretty much sold on it being a "decent" browser.

Haven't gotten to try it first hand though, so my impressions could change after i get a tilt. I suspect opera on the ocean might be a little different than the tilt. Was it totally unusable for you?

Can you comment on anything else tilt related? 3g, voice dialing, gps? There has to be something good about it. I loved my iPhone when i had it and i still admit it's a great phone, i'm just sick of not getting picture messages, slow internet and gps would be nice. A replaceable battery is a must for me too

It wasn't completely unbearable, but it just feels mobilized, compared to the safari.

Not nearly as stable as safari. I mean it is called Opera Mini for a reason LOL.

Opera Mini 4 on my Pearl is comparable to Safari in most aspects. Safari does beat Opera Mini 4 in some aspects, but Opera Mini 4 beats Safari in some aspects too. Especially in one area that is very important to me...downloading speeds. Opera Mini 4 compresses the data before the data is sent through the slow EDGE network. Downloading web pages on Opera Mini 4 beats Safari hands in speed when browsing web pages.

Edit: Opera Mini 4 also caches some of your previous pages when browsing. So when I hit the back key on Opera Mini, the previous web page is displayed almost instantaneously. Safari does not cache previous pages, so when you hit the back key, it has to download the page again.

Opera Mini 4 has not crashed on my yet. Where you using the beta ? The final version just came out a couple of weeks ago.

Posted by: BikerRick

I've tried Nokia phones, Blackberry 8700, 8525, Blackjack, and Moto 3xx. I got an iPhone a couple weeks ago, and it its by far the best phone I've owned. It doesn't have as many features as the Nokia or Windows Mobile phones, but what it does have works very well. Those do-it-all phones don't really do any one thing very well and I end up getting frustrated with them. The iphone really does most things well and as long as Apple fixes the bad things in a timely manner, I'll stick with it for quite a long time.

I used beta for most if the time I had the ocean. Had the final version for a week or so before I went iPhone. But I rarely used it cuz I was so over Helio.

The Tilt is a nice phone to have. that is unless you've previously owned an iPhone which would mean that you're use to having a phone that instantly responds to your commands. unlike the Tilt that seems like is way too underpowered in the RAM department. I just couldn't take the damn slowness for more than a day. it drove me crazy.

sure, the iPhone doesn't have GPS (I don't need it because my car already has it), it isn't 3G (which doesn't matter either because my light web surfing doesn't demand high bandwidth) and nor does it do MMS. but these are all short comings that I could live with. unfortunately the UI slowness of the Tilt was something I could damn sure do without.

Life after the iPhone...yep. I went back to BlackBerry. The 8310 is an excellent device with an updated OS that speeds up functions and is still as rock-solid as it has always been. It will be a fine "tweener" phone for me until the generation-2 iPhone is released.

I really, really liked the iPhone...but for several reasons (that I have shared ad nauseum) I am not an owner/user at present. But, I do miss the touchscreen and great UI. I will definately be an iPhone user again in the future for the improved model.

That is...unless the new BlackBerry 9000 series (touchscreen, 3G, WiFi, 1-gig internal memory, all-new OS...) steals my attention. Rumor is that both phones will hit around February 2008...so, we'll see!!

Ya know the problem? iPhone is geared towards a similar audience as the sidekick. It's for entertainment purposes only. People need to expect that going in. You won't get bells and whistles, mms or even a loud speakerphone or custom ringtones. What you get is a great web browser and some fun little ideas like visual voicemail.

If they worked a little harder for iPhone 2 and took it a bit more seriously, the iPhone would be the next razr. Everybody would have one.

i still have my iphone, but my tytn II is coming on monday. so that will replace this.

I don't think I'll be doing any more "all-in-one" devices after this. I had a T-Mobile Dash before and obviously the iPhone now and I honestly miss having a plain and simple phone. I'm always so scared of breaking the phone so I just want something simple that I can drag through the mud and not really worry about damaging it.

This is the reason on monday i'm getting a simple flip phone. Everytime i ever went anywhere with my iPhone, i was so careful with it it stressed me out. No more of that

I felt the same way after I had the iPhone and various other high-end smartphones after it...so I got a Motorola Razr2 V9 for a while. It was a teriffic phone, and I even had it modded to suit me...but it was just lacking the easy email access, and the other personal and business-specific features that I had grown to really appreciate on my smartphones...and use on a daily basis to improve the quality and productivity of my life.

So...I sold it, and went back to a more full-function device. I am typically very protective and anal about my phones anyway, so being paranoid about damage is not a biggie with me. I just couldn't get used to not having everything I wanted at my fingertips. I'm spoiled...

Sold the iPhone - bought an 8310. But, I do miss the iPhone at times - especially web browsing! Also, considered the N95 but it's still quite pricey.

May get in again with the 3G version that may have a better bluetooth implementation!

Posted by: thadoggfather

Do you guys like the 8800/8820 or 8300/8310 more?

Posted by: Jayden0606

Life after the iPhone? Yes.. The iPhone. I sold my 4GB and got a 8GB. I can have a back-up or secondary, but I can't replace it. Like someone else mentioned, the things that the iPhone does/capable of doing, it does extra well. I tried leaving it for the Tilt and a Curve, but I can't. GPS? I just bought one on black friday. Even before I bought it, Google maps was enough for me. I honestly like the directions on google maps more than Telenav.

MMS... never really used it on my other phones. Come to think about it, I didn't use it at all on the last three phones I had. (Curve, Sync, 3125)

Posted by: kinderco

any new phone I play with just dissappointes me compared to the iphone. Sure it doesn't have all the features but the ones it does have it does better then anything else....

I can't carry another device I feel crippled.

The N95 is a POS. Had one for a week, and it was the cheapest, flimsiest, most mattel-toy-loke thing I have ever owned...and a disgrace for Nokia to have it as their "flagship" phone. Yeah, it's loaded with features...but the build quality is hideous...and all that for $700-800!! What a deal!

Yeah I think Nokia is trying to cut too many corners for as much as they charge. N95-3 looks alright, it's kind of cool it's an unlocked Nokia that's compatible with US 3G but still, the price is way too much in my opinion at $600. I haven't played with Symbian too much but it doesn't seem like it's for me. Sony Ericsson smartphones seem goofy too when I played with the P1i.

I'd only really touch a blackberry or iPhone at this point. If it was going to be using a basic phone, it'd better be cheap or free!

Blackberry Curve 8310

Still have my iPhone but it's not my primary day to day meat and potatoes phone anymore. I put a TurboSIM in it and am using it on my TMobile account as a backup phone and general purpose iPod

I love it for what it does but after 6 months of playing with my phone I need to get back to work
