LG Vu CU920

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: 1heliofan

Does anyone know when this phone will be launching? and what is its os going to be? i know it will be running one of the first versions of firefox, but what else besides that?

Thanks

Posted by: Lizard 1

A guy on the thread about Novemeber release phones stated that they are releasing it in January. He did say, however, they were TRYING to get it released in December.

With them releasing the K850 so damn late (March) I think the VU is something they need the week of Xmas or the first week of Jan for a boost in sales... All these sliders and new flips are cool, but some of us want a phone like the K850 and I think the VU might be a good alternative...

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

Schedule is still January. The OS is proprietary, it is not a smartphone. It's also very small and sleek, but the iphone has a better touch screen.

Posted by: 1heliofan

why do you have to tell me this is not going to be a data device. i think it should be...'cause corporate will only give me a data device. and i really want this phone.

Posted by: spicaly

hopefully it shows up on the fan discount sites..... im kinda glad its not listed as a data device that way i can get the cheaper all in one media package and not the $40 data package you need for a pda

Early, Mid or Late delivery??? I really hate the wait as I will bee month to month by January and if it is as good as some are saying it is, cool - great sub for the late arriving K850... Probably cheaper anyways, huh? Than the K850, I mean...

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

January is about as specific as it gets.

Probably know more middle to late this month, right? Waiting sucks!!

Posted by: freddyttt

Thanks god no data service needed

Posted by: Lizard 1

So, it has been pretty quiet for a phone that supposedly releases as early as a few weeks from now... Any test results for this device?

I see a bunch of "spy" shots and the like, but no tests and comparisons to the iPhone...

Are we looking at a late Jan. release and therefore the quiet tone for this phone?

Posted by: Lizard 1

So, since there is virtually no speak at all in the LG forums about the 920 and pretty much no one speaking about it here, is this a crap device or a device that is destined to be lame?

I am intrigued and actually a little amazed that there was more talk prior to the release of the Shine than of this phone...

What's up with this baby?

Posted by: spicaly

im kinda wondering whats up as well... i was looking forward to getting it, but its possible LG is just trying to keep a tight lid on the final specs/ui etc

Posted by: Lizard 1

I think Apple and AT&T are in agreement to wait to unvail the 920 until after Jan. 1st. It also may be a marketing deal where they can garnish sales after holiday on a cool new phone, but with them releasing so many at once and rapidly in the last few months, I think they may allow Apple to get as many sales up through Xmas and the week after...

They've just been real hush, hush on this... There are usually hands on tests by now and guys like Cnet and others have basic reviews... Not yet - other than just lame pics with the screen protector on it.

Posted by: spicaly

theres a new video of the 990 in the lg forum... i wonder if the 920 will share the same ui? it looks pretty nice

Posted by: Mark Larson

The Vu is a MediaFLO phone, right? It makes sense for them to launch the TV service with a phone that can use it. As AT&T has said that they intend to launch the TV service "as early as possible" next year, January could very well be possible.

do that means you wont be forced to get data plan with this phone if you want the rebates?

Posted by: spicaly

that would be nice, that way we can get the cheaper mediamax plan and not the $40 pda plan right?

What classifies a phone as a smartphone?

Posted by: master357

-regular phone: non-smart OS with or without qwerty (it's been almost a couple years since att/cingular had a regular phone with qwerty, samsung d307 was the last)
-smartphone: smart OS w/o qwerty like htc 2125 3125 (the last ones att sold anyway)
-PDA: smart OS w/ qwerty like palm treo 680, htc tilt, pantech duo, moto q9 and so on
-iphone
the Qwerty keyboard is all that separates the two smart classes
there are four classes of data packages for these four classes of phones

the iphone data packages are almost the same as the regular phones. but they are a different set of soc codes in the system thus they are a separate class

Posted by: Wide_opeN

Does the VU flip or slide?

Posted by: bkw13

neither, it's a bar style like the iphone.

Anyone who wants to shell out the money this thing is going to cost and NOT get a data plan is an idiot. Half the features on it use data, why would you even want this phone? Vanity?

I would go with a more accurate definition:
Smartphone: user is able to install new and native apps to device with little/no hassle. The phone's operating system is open, and the software maker has published SDK's to assist in adding features.
Dumbphone: Closed, proprietary OS, the only new apps work through Java or BREW (if you're stuck with a carrier that uses that system).

People do this because they still like the style of the phone. Right now, people buy blackberries and other pda's, and don't have the correct data plan, and some don't have a data plan at all. People buy Media Flo tv's from verizon but don't use the tv at all. They either like the other features or aspects of the phones and/or they like they look and style. The biggest reason that people initial purchased the Iphone was because of pure style, and the oooohs and ahhhs of the touch screen. I will admit to anyone, the Iphone is one of the hottest looking electronic devices, not just smartphones, that I have ever seen, and it drew me in to buy one.

btw
i was refering to at&t's classifications of phones to fit into thier data plan structure, (which was the topic) not what may be good definitions for the real world.

I held and played with a working Vu on wednesday morning at a manager meeting. the MediaFlo TV was very nice, even had a channel guide like a cable box would. The qwerty text keyboard was very nice. Launch date is "should be able to order early february"

Also unlimited internet will be $15 and MediaFlo is supposedly another $15
So the cost of operation won't be too bad.

lmao, thats the true corporate answer they give all of us. availability should be early Feb. which translated means not even they know. did you get to watch all 7 stations? my experience was a little different. it was early jan. and it was kind of choppy. possibly due to the fact we were in a low coverge area. but thats another story

Posted by: master357

i flipped a few channels but i don't think i saw them all. i wasn't even paying any attention to what was on. i just was looking for picture quality and judging the interface. then i moved on to explore as much of the device as i could before i had pass it on as it made it's way around the room.

Posted by: holodoctor1

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if this has the themes available on the Prada in Europe? (fish theme, etc)

I'm guessing not, since this is not Prada branded, though I thought I remembered another LG phone having the fish theme.

I can't WAIT for this phone either way!!

Well said, the anticipation for the VU goes far and wide. Any word on the MediaFlo coverage area, like where the mobile tv will work?

Posted by: holodoctor1

So it will apparently cost around $200

awesome, hopefully its available on premier

Posted by: Jonbo298

Damn, I've been wanting the Prada for the longest time. Looks like this would be the closest I can get (within a reasonable price range..not paying out the arse for an unlocked phone). But...argh. If I get new job, I'm going to heavily look into the phone.

Well it has been expected that this handset will be the first with the first iteration of mobile firefox on it... so I'm asking someone who has actually had a chance to use the phone.

Posted by: DukeL

Found this from a ces report.

"AT&T, the only carrier to offer iPhone in the U.S., will also offer a serious competitor to the Apple's handset, the LG CU920.
The new device looks almost like the iPhone, and has the same specifications, including the touch-only interface.
The only changes are 3G HSDPA support and Firefox Web browser instead of Safari."

firefox web browser? hope its not minimo that thing sucks,

MediaFLO has nothing to do with data. For VZW, you have two options. Get an unlimited data + MediaFLO for a fixed rate or just do MediaFLO for $15. I would assume AT&T is going to do the same thing since MediaFLO is controlled by MediaFLO corp (aka Qualcomm) and not AT&T.

Thant being said, as of right now, MediaFLO isnt all its cracked up to be. Yeah its ok to quickly see a show or something, but there is only one (a news channel) that is actually LIVE. Everything else is by a specific MediaFLO schedule and repeats alot. So you can see The Daily Show on Comedy Central about 5 times throughout the day. IMO, its more of a cool novelty item than anything I would use all the time. I had it for a month (and I was really excited about it) and then said, umm no.

Posted by: DukeL

Got back from a att store today, the rep was talking to me about the vu. He was pretty exicited he had seen it a couple days ago at a training.

Updating the guide uses data But thats it. But yeah, NBC, NBC News 2 Go, CBS, and Fox are sometimes live. News is more live then the others. Nick is whats on TV up until 7pm-5 or 6am then that timeframe switches to Nicktoons. Unsure on ESPN but I think it switches around between the various ESPN channels.

It's still in its infancy with alot of room to grow but I like the service myself since I actually use it

doh! i forgot about the guide. thanks jonbo.

I think if MediaFLO could just take a west coast server or east coast server and mirror that onto their lineup, then I think Mobile TV could be actually pretty damn cool. but we'll see.

so what OS does the lg vu use? I hope it is windows cause I want to install slingbox. I get about 250 channels with verizon fios via slingbox. Who needs mediaflo especially if they charge extra. Doesn't make since for consumers like me.

No it will not run windows. It will run a interface similar to LG's Prada phone.

hmm..

thats what slingbox and orb.com are both for..

hell you can watch ALL your home channels at the airport on your phone instead of the 7 < or whatever they offer > on mnedia flo..

with sling you can even controll your digital cable / DVR < down side is sling is for PDAs >
with ORB you can record shows and watch them as you wait.. or watch all your channels LIVE .. < works on ALMOST ANY phone.. hell ive even watched it on a v400.. choppy as heck.. but it worked >
\

so. read up on them.. < unless you like reruns from mediaflo all day long.. >

me personally I would rather watch the superbowl live on my phone < of course I would try to find a TV .. but if life interfeared .. < kids needs to go to the doc.. kids pratice.. WORK.. and I wanna watch the new episode of "24"... orb and sling will save the day . try that with media flo..

oh, and did I mention the no extra cost on the phone bill < other then the unlimited media that we should all have anyway > ?

INFINATLY better the mediaflo.

Posted by: aaadock

here is a good place to start..

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...85&page=2&pp=15

in this theard I did back in 06' I used an
LG CU500
aa A707 Sync
and a Blackjack

IM sorry your not able to see it in action.. the host I used for the vids are no longer around and I never localy saved the vids..

but the idea is there..

in the first one im watching "Star Track the next generation" on the FX channel waiting for my kids to get out of shool.... im waiting in the drive thru pick up line at the time.

orb and sling for the WIN.. media flo loses.

Posted by: anubis9278

orb + new dell xps 420 desktop with cable card support = eternal bliss
oh and at&t 3G

Posted by: DukeL

True. But streaming video as good as it is, still leaves much to be desired as far as picture quality. While slingbox is much better than orb it does cost like $150 in hardware and $30 for slingplayer mobile to use it on your device. I can see mediaflow being superior in the future once real channel lineups are introduced.

Posted by: Jonbo298

Slingbox has its uses, but not for me. I'm not paying for cable that I barely used at home anyways so I canceled it. With me potentially having a full time job plus a part time during my soon to be former days off, no time to pay upwards of $20-$100 for Cable (plus cost of Slingbox, and other things). So I just pay the $25 (on VZW at least) for the TV and Data, and $27 for the internet at home that I use to check various sites and thats about it for now.

Yes, Slingbox is awesome. It's great for people who can use it. I'm not one of them. The channels provided work for me. They don't work for you. So keep up the bashing. (Might want to use a spell checker once in awhile too. I recommend Firefox since it's built in.)

Posted by: holodoctor1

And good luck getting slingbox to work on a college campus network. For me, I would be SOL. Mediaflo is going to work perfectly for what I need.

Thank you for bringing the topic back. I have been keeping tabs every time that some one posts something new, however it is very rarely about the subject matter.

I just saw this article at engadgetmobile.com. I can't tell whether it's a good or bad hint that MoFirefox will be included in the VU.

I'm sorry. Talking about a feature that is ON the phone is on subject with the phone. Some people want to know ahead of time what the goods and bads are to some of the FEATURES that the phone is capable of.

Posted by: holodoctor1

Well, I just got off the phone with about 8 stores, and no one has heard anything about it, though some knew a little about the phone, and how "it's like the prada", so at least they're expecting it. I'm not sure we're going to hear anything tomorrow though

Posted by: ATnt-RSC

So far the CU920 is not in our main inventory system. It has not been assigned a SKU number and cannot be ordered, yet. It will be at least a week, and maybe longer, before it's available to consumers.

So much word is out there pointing to some sort of press release or otherwise about the VU and/or at&t new Mobile tv. I guess we may know something in the morning.

I'm just as anxious as everyone else, I've been waiting for this phone since last month. Still nothing on AT&T's website either...
