Hi,
I recently bought a unlocked 8gb Iphone with 1.02 ..
Is there a way to check what method was used to unlock so that I can safely upgrade to 1.1.2

I am a Iphone noob pls help;

I would go ahead and assume it was unlocked using an old anysim or iunlock, and re-virginize the phone. There are stickies explaining how to re-vriginize, and from there upgrade to an unlocked 1.1.2. I would start there. Hope that helps.

What if those methods were not used?

Can the re-virginizing methods cripple an iPhone if it was unlocked another way?

Nope, not that I know of. The only was if it was unlocked with IPSF, which I am sure it wasn't. If it was, they would have upgraded by now.

i upgraded my 1.0.2 recently. was easier than i thought.
I followed this guide,
Guide
as it was the most straight forward. there is so much conflicting advice about.

can you go straight to 1.1.2 from 1.0.2 or do you need 1.1.1 first?

If your iphone's fw is unlocked and at 1.0.2 why then would you want to update to 1.1.2 ?
Seems to me like you would be loosing so much in the process. Any benefits in upgrading?

Why not just go out and buy a new iphone that already has fw 1.1.2 ?

You can't buy a new phone with 1.1.2 as it would be unable to be unlcocked if it was OTB. And you gain quite a bit of stability and (I found) more battery life along with other feature such as wifi itunes, double tap home button shortcuts etc
