Step-by-step: Bypass Java security on Rogers LG Shine (TU720)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: windsorsean

I made an earlier post with instructions for adding custom ringtones to the LG Shine from Rogers. This post uses the same method to bypass the Java security restrictions imposed on the phone which require the user to accept every request for data communication, for all but Rogers signed applications.

What kind of apps could benefit from this? Gmail mobile, Google Maps, Opera mobile browser, etc.

* disclaimer: this works for me but I can't guarantee it won't turn you phone into a pretty looking brick *

OK, here's the procedure. The first few points are the same as for ringtones.

Requirements:
Instructions:
  1. Install software listed above
  2. Hook up phone
  3. Launch BitPim
  4. BitPim should show "Other CDMA phone on COMx" (where x is the COM port being used)
  5. Choose Edit, Settings
  6. Change Phone Type to "LG-VX8700" (this is the CDMA version Shine)
  7. Click OK to close
  8. Choose View, View Filesystem
  9. Click the Filesystem icon
  10. Click the expand button beside "/"
  11. It will say "Retrieving" for a minute or two
  12. Expand to the following directory: /LGAPP/Media/Java/cert
  13. Right-click on the file "rogers.pol" and select "Save ...", then save it to a location on your computer
  14. MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF THE ORIGINAL FILE (just in case!)
  15. Open the file with WordPad or another editor (Notepad does not display it correctly, not recommended)
  16. You will notice the file is in sections. Go to the end of the file to the section headed by "domain: untrusted"
  17. Delete everything under that header (but leave the header alone), and replace it with everything copied from the section "domain: C=CA;O=Rogers Wireless;CN=Rogers Wireless Test Root CA"
  18. Save your changes (you did make a backup, right?)
  19. Back in BitPim, right-click on the "cert" folder and select "New File ..."
  20. Select the new "rogers.pol" file you modified, and overwrite the existing file
  21. Disconnect and reboot the phone, you're all set to go!

Enjoy!

Thx big time for all this help... I now have solved the ringtones issue. But now i've done the java security bypass on my LG TU720 with the rogers.pol file as you explained, intalled google map mobile, but when i try to open the app from the app file on the phone, java opens but closes seconds after it started and then it goes back to the app list. any idea on how to solve this!?!?

I've installed google maps myself and didn't have this issue. How did you install it? Did you install it after making the pol file change?

I also made the same policy change to the file "att.pol" but I don't know if that has any effect.

Posted by: JohnD82

Well I think i've done correctly this time and it still doesn't work, i've also check the att.pol file but it was already changed or i don't know if comes like that by default. I've also remove the application before, to reinstall it (google map) after the pol file change, and i've done that with my mobile browser, searched google, then on the google web site clicked on google map(download) downloaded it in the application folder even tried to restart the phone, started the application then i saw the java white screen (the startup one) then after 2 or 3 seconds went back to the application folder. i'm confuse.... ...thx in advance...

Posted by: Namx333

hey guys what the java security for? and can someone please send me the Ring tones for the tu720 i got so happy that i dele it all.

Posted by: azhlar813

how do you install this java applications? to which folder? i tried saving my jar files on the memory card but there's no install option.

what i did was a bit messed up approach. i renamed my games as just plainly jar, then deleted the one stored in the m008 folder, just replaced the old games. but unfortunately, the names of the games showing are still the old ones and most games that i was able to install were kinda too small.

hope you guys can also give us newbies detailed instruction on how to install these java apps after removing the java security.

thanx in advance

Posted by: oddsocks

Um. You might not want to be playing around with BitPim if you don't even know how to install java applications to your handset.

Posted by: azhlar813

yeah, thats why im asking anyone who knows how.. so they can show us. duuhh??

i was able to install games and apps if you download it from the internet. what i want to learn is to install java apps from pc to cellphone.

i hope next time you comment, you can add the instructions as well, right?

I have the same issue too. I downloaded the application from www.google.com/gmm

Well, I could do that, but what would you learn? Or I could give you vague instructions of how to use Google to look up information that you need to, and in the end you will benefit in the grand scheme.

Try querying "LG Shine Install a JAR" (what an obvious thing to search for) and looking at the 4th link. The KE970 and TU720 are practically the same. You might need to make a few other modifications within BitPim to unlock Application installation. You're on HoFo (not to mention the internet), there's a wealth of information at your finger tips.

Go now, Young Jedi.

Posted by: azhlar813

and i already searched the internet obviously thats why I ended up in this forum. If you have the same phone as ours, you would know the frustration.

i already checked that ke970 weeks ago, but its not the same with rogers. the one who started this thread did helped us greatly by showing us whats up with this java security BS.

this is the first LG phone I had, and ive been a nokia user eversince.. its just here in canada, we dont have much options as compared to europe and asia.

as you can see in postings in this forum, not one has posted yet detailed instructions on how to install java in this specific phone.

looks may be the same with ke970, but thats about it... if I would be able to find a guide in this forum, wont i be wasting my time asking it again here?

Posted by: windsorsean

JohnD82 - I'm sorry to see you are having problems even launching java apps, I never came across this issue so I don't think I can help. At this point I'd suggest you put the java security back to normal and try getting support from Rogers or LG. If you're willing to you could even try finding (or buying) a Rogers supported app and see if that at least works.

For everyone else, the only way I've tried installing java apps is via the web browser. If I have time I might see if it can be done directly but don't hold your breath, I don't have much time at the moment!

Posted by: azhlar813

anyone tried using gthing? looks promising. i tried gthingtest and its showing it support tu720.

i have an older version but it just stop responding if you tried to install java... im wondering if anyone here have tried using the latest version

Posted by: JohnD82

well i should also add that when i try do download the google map app (to stay with this exemple) there is a screen before the download start that says: untrusted midlet, application google map is unsigned, the source and integrity of this midlet can't be checked....then i have to push the continue button for the download to start

so azhlar, any news with the gthing!? i'm at work so can't try...

i have a question about google map mobile
does it load the map offline, or does it have to connect to the net inorder to load maps?

also.. to install do u just follow the KE970 instructions after bypassing the java (e.g. there will b an option to install when u click "option").. so this mean it will work for games too rite?

also by reinstalling app... do u mean even the built in ones like rogers vision and such

thx a bunch

dood dun b a prick if u dunno what the real issue is
this technique does not work for the TU720... obviously if u do own this phone u'll find out alot of the stuff u can do for KE970 doesnt work for TU720.. hence everyone was fussing over getting mp3 ringtones

but yea.. it'd b great if we can install jar. app cux i dun have a data plan

first of all this is all from what i know so far about this phone, and i'm pretty newbie with this phone stuff

1- i think google map needs to be connected to the internet
2-ke970 instructions doesn'T work, basicly we need the install option available
3-the rogers apps won't be deleted if you do this , you just need to reinstall the apps other than the rogers ones

yea.. i tried it out and then i figured this only works over mobile internet
wonder if windson will figure out how to install jar. applications from PC to phone

Posted by: Ron21

I have the same issue with the ATT version of the shine (CU720), no install option. Hopefully someone figures out how to implement it.

I just got a LG TU720 (First phone ever) and so I've been trying to put apps/games on it. I did exactly what windsorsean posted to do (I got ringtones working) but I cannot install apps/games. Where is the option to "install" supposed to be after I change the rogers.pol file?
Any input is much appreciated.

the way windsor explained only works when u download files off the net using the phone..
i assume ur trying to install apps downloading from pc to ur phone.. and that doesnt work yet =)

but we still love u windsor

As for installing applications without using the web, I still can't figure out exactly how to do it. It looks like the primary list of installed applications is stored in a binary database file, and hacking that file is beyond me.

There is a kind of workaround but I'm not sure how useful this is. First you have to install an application via the web. Once it's installed, you can replace the .jar file and modify the .jad file to replace the downloaded app with one of your choice. I know this doesn't really help much.

One tip if you do want to modify the .jar/.jad files, copy the application to the memory card first. Then you can stick the memory card in a computer and edit it that way.

I'm giving up on this one I'm afraid, I've done all I can.

Thank you again!! You made an earlier post for adding custom ringtones and now for bypassing Java security. You help many peoples!!

Posted by: arimpala

GoogleMaps worked for me. Then I downloaded a newer version that became available and it started behaving as you described, won't start. I'm pretty sure this is a google issue, since they warned when I downloaded that it wasn't sure it would work the device. I'll just keep checking back with them.

Posted by: aKeio

Are there any more recommended apps? I have installed Opera and GMail, I have no use for google maps so I was wondering if theres anything else out there that is useful

Posted by: aah_tree

just wondering does bypassing this java gives u the oppertunities to use ringtone over 300kb..

Seriously 300kb is nothing for a ringtone, either is like 8 seconds long or the quality is at 96...

someone posted a dat editor that will allow us to change the size of the ringtone files.. i havnt had the time to look into that cux im doing exams.. ill give it a try after exams
but think about it.. internal space is 20mb.. if we put full quality full song in... we can prob fit up to 4-5 songs lolz........

i dont understand 17
# Delete everything under that header (but leave the header alone), and replace it with everything copied from the section "domain: C=CA;O=Rogers Wireless;CN=Rogers Wireless Test Root CA"

Which section are you talking about?

Posted by: stumpypooh

Sweet! This worked perfect for me. Thanks a bunch windsorsean

@ fordtuff
Copy all the stuff under the second last domain, anything under these words "domain: C=CA;O=Rogers Wireless;CN=Rogers Wireless Test Root CA"
there should be 10 allow statements, and paste them under the "domain: untrusted" section

hope it works for you!

Posted by: aah_tree

OK, can someone please let me know if what I am doing is right
Thanks a thousand!!

Posted by: hybrid77

hmmm....Opera mini works without any hitches....no luck with the google maps though. Anyone find out what the issue is with that yet?

In fact I now have the added problem that I cant delete google maps. When I try to delete it it, the app info page shows up with nil values, whereas if I just check app info without trying to delete it of course says its google maps, size of app, etc...

THanks Windsorsean, Ringtones and some apps is better than an incredibly locked down phone.

Hi John.........I had exactly the same problem after I change the rogers.pol....Did you figure it out now?? I couldn't use the google map. thanks!

Anyone know if this method, or a similar method, works for the AT&T version (CU720) ??

Posted by: z22styles

worked perfectly fine on my TU720, i didnt have to reinstall all the existing applications, they all worked flawlessly

Posted by: gbhatthal

i tried all this, but still java security won't let me set my mp3 files as ringtones. overwriting the midi files works, but can't really add mp3 files and set 'em as ringtones. do i have to delete everything under " domain: untrusted " and replace it with starting from "domain: C=CA;O=Rogers Wireless;CN=Rogers Wireless Test Root CA " to "allow: multimedia_recording" ?

Posted by: sensesfusion

Do you guys have good suggestion what to install for our Shine?

The new Google Map doesn't work, many app i found doesn't work. I have the old mobile google map and some useless benchmarks.

pretty sure this is for "JAVA".. not mp3s

yeah, but still my .jar or .jad files won't work either. do you think if i get it unlocked, that would be any help ? otherwise i'll just let it be. don't wanna mess it up completely.

it only works if u download the files with the phone through mobile internet... it wont work if u just place the jar and jad into the phone.

unlocking doesnt do anything, it just allow you to use the phone with different provider, u need to debrand (which is not avaiblable for TU720 yet)

Posted by: Dark Mirage

Has anyone figured out how to do this on Telus version of the phone yet? I'm following the directions but i get cut short at the "open /LGapp/java" part. There seems to be no LGapp directory on the telus version of the phone...

Posted by: champion_qh

change roger.pol doesn't work me......i still can not install google maps...

Posted by: gbhatthal

thanks denyfate, but if debranding is available for tu720, would that cause roger applications like video calling and stuff to stop working ? there is a place i know, i think they'd be able to debrand the tu720.

Posted by: aah_tree

i dont think what they do is debrand it, what they do is to replace some files of the tu720 to the shine.

The newest google maps doesn't work for me as well.

Posted by: z22styles

me either, is there an older version we can download?

Posted by: hybrid77

I wasnt able to at first either. Rather, it would let me download, but not run google maps.

Instead, I downloaded google maps from http://www.getjar.com/products/3388/GoogleMapsformobile and it worked fine. Don't know if its the most recent version or not, but does it really matter?

Good Luck

Posted by: Dark Mirage

Ok, I've found the Telus version of the file under :Brew/ams in the file system. I corrected the _policy.txt file to look like this:

domain: CN=TELUS Mobility Trusted Third Party Domain Root,O=TELE-MOBILE COMPANY,OU=TELUS Mobility,L=Toronto,ST=Ontario,C=CA
oneshot(oneshot): phone_call
oneshot(oneshot): messaging
blanket(oneshot): read_user_data
blanket(oneshot): write_user_data
blanket(session): application_auto_invocation
blanket(session): multimedia_recording
blanket(session): system_information
blanket(session): location
blanket(session): net_access
blanket(session): local_connectivity

domain: untrusted
oneshot(oneshot): phone_call
oneshot(oneshot): messaging
blanket(oneshot): read_user_data
blanket(oneshot): write_user_data
blanket(session): application_auto_invocation
blanket(session): multimedia_recording
blanket(session): system_information
blanket(session): location
blanket(session): net_access
blanket(session): local_connectivity

Basically I copied everything under the first header and copied under the domain:untrusted header. Is that the correct way to do it? Because I'm still unable to download Opera Mini off the web browser.

Posted by: k20z3_si

I tried to re download Google Maps today and they seem to have fixed the HTTP prompt problem (or maybe it was where I went to download it: www.google.com/gmm). The new version now has a "Allow Per Session" option. Now to see it GMail will work, it freezes my CU720!

Posted by: Bpenney

hey just wondering when u copy everything from domain: """C=CA;O=Rogers Wireless;CN=Rogers""" and put in under ""domain untrusted"".. does that include u copy the header as well like the ("""C=CA;O=Rogers Wireless;CN=Rogers Wireless Test Root CA""") and patse it or just everything under it, and whats a good way to figure out if this worked..

sorry for my English...

Posted by: k20z3_si

I don't know if any US AT&T owners are still looking for how to do the Java security bypass, but I figured out how to do it. Just follow the steps in the first post but instead of deleting everything under the "untrusted" header and replacing it with everything copied from the section "domain: C=CA;O=Rogers Wireless;CN=Rogers Wireless Test Root CA", just replace the stuff under the "untrusted" header with this:

domain: untrusted
allow: packet_data_access_http_https
allow: comm_connectivity_options
oneshot: local_connectivity
oneshot: low_level_packet_data_access_2

Posted by: rookie88

sorry if this question has been asked but looks like my LG shine is one of those SOL where the Java "Install" option was disabled by the service provider.

Would the "install" option reappear after the security policy file is removed?

I really want to try out http://www.getjar.com/products/14533/Sudoku

OK, here's the procedure. The first few points are the same as for ringtones.

Requirements:
  • Latest BitPim software from www.bitpim.org (tested with 1.0.2)
  • LG phone tools software (provided in box)
  • USB cable (provided in box)

A few more things you might be interested in:
  • You will need to re-install existing applications. The security seems to be set at install time, so whatever apps you have installed you should remove and re-install.
  • Proof that Rogers is evil - look at the cingular.pol file. It allows for application signed by any trusted source. The rogers.pol file only allows for apps signed by Rogers. This goes well beyond just wanting to protect the customer from bad applications!
  • This edit makes the phone completely trust any java application, so make sure you know what you're installing before you install it!

Enjoy!

okay i get it to where it says

"[*]Back in BitPim, right-click on the "cert" folder and select "New File ...""

now I am lost on the next step where it now says
[*]Select the new "rogers.pol" file you modified, and overwrite the existing file[*]Disconnect and reboot the phone, you're all set to go!

which step am I do am I doing? Putting the new rogers.pol file as a new file or am I overwriting the existing rogers.pol file with the new one???

help me please I've been trying to figure this out for two days and its BUGGING ME that I can't

and then I need to know how can I actually get the game in the phone using bitpim.
Do I actually replace one of the old games under cert (cause I read somewhere I have to replace) or do I put it in as a new game? which ever way HOW????????
I AM SO LOST!
and then I read somewhere it said (find .jad files for your .jar files) how do I do that I downloaded the software jadmaker.com but for somereason it saved as a jadmaker.zip?????
I don't know what I am doing
HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!! in advance!

Does anyone know how you can tell if your Java Security has been by-passed or something?

Cause Ive done the same thing, followed every instruction. Its not a brick, its like totally fine. It seems as if nothing has changed.

So does anyone know how you can tell On the phone if it has passes Java Security?

Thanks in Advance.

Has Rogers changed their Java Security or something? I was just looking at the Rogers website and from what I can tell one can download something like Google Maps without having to bypass their java security. They just state that this app is not a rogers certified app and will incur extra data charges as someone uses it.

Has this always been this case and bypassing java security just sidesteps the extra data charges? They list several apps like Opera Mini, Mobile Firefox, Mobile Checkbook, Mobile Bartender etc etc that can be downloaded but are outside their unlimited browsing plan and just cost extra.

Can anyone clarify if its even worth by-passing Java for any reason other then downloading java games?

I haven't posted here in a while, but the primary reason is that Rogers severly disables the usefulness of non-Rogers java apps by putting them in a restricted security zone when they are installed. So it prompts every time you launch it to allow data access. By bypassing security restrictions it allows you to launch the app without the annoying prompt every time. It has no impact on data charges.

Other vendors will at least allow applications signed by a trusted authority to be given higher permissions but Rogers puts the restrictrion on all apps not signed with the Rogers certificate.

Sorry for bumping this old thread, but I just got my LG Shine last week.
Does this Java unlocking method work for the LG Shine CU720? (AT&T service provider)
