...the iphone's a$$ once it gets rolling? are you people watching the progress of this thing? are you looking at the players that are involved? and its open source. and they are paying 10 mil for the best programs. hello, innovation! manufacturers pay nothing for the software which will drive down the costs for the phone. do yourself a favor and watch the two videos on code.google.com, then take a minute and think about the possibilities. now think about not having the same protocols that windows mobile, or apple may have to release fixes, updates, new apps, etc.

i know im gonna get flamed but who cares. im looking forward to a danger sidekick with android that has google earth, with my location feature, and street view that cooks me breakfast in bed.

Keywords. (and also when I'll start paying attention)

Until then, entirely too much is subject to change, so I'm not going to invest too much of my time or hopes.

That's just my curmudgeonly MO when it comes to new technologies like this. Some turn out a final product like they what was announced, and others are nothing like it...

Posted by: KDarling

I'm disappointed they didn't announced downloadable Android versions for popular phones (perhaps with the option to revert if you didn't like it).

Now THAT would've made everyone stand up and take notice... and convert and/or write apps NOW.

I do think it looks pretty cool, almost like they took the iPhones shortcomings and made it better. Ive been impressed with what Ive seen so far.

I personally enjoy pushing just one or two buttons to get what I want...

Yes, if you like tons of advertising. Plus you can thank Apple for pushing the envelope. The future looks bright for wireless.

Spot on. That's exactly what I'm skeptical about.

I doubt there will be much advertising, and what advertising there is, it would probably be beneficial to the user. A perfect example is Google Mobile Maps. They use advertising to help you find businesses. I think Google is smart enough to know that the consumer will not tolerate much advertising on their phones unless it's beneficial to them.

I think one of the reasons Google is entering the mobile market is so you not only use their phones, but so you will use their products that will be closely tied to their phones such as GMAIL, Google Maps, and the regular Google search. The smart phone market is starting to explode and Google smartly wants a piece of that pie.

Also you can probably thank Google for Apple's release of their SDK. It appears Apple's original plans was not to have a SDK and instead have 3rd party apps be web based. But Google's entry into the mobile market and their openness helped change those plans. I think the competition will help Apple, Blackberry, Google and maybe even Microsoft make better products. Competition is good for the consumer.

I doubt it, I think it's just a way to bring Google products to your cell phone. So you will use Google products both on your mobile and home computer. But time will tell.

Vaporware.

It'll be interesting to see. It's going to take a combination of Google, hardware manufacturers, and carriers to get any single device on the market.

Google has a great track record, but we've all seen what manufacturers and carriers can do.

Personally, the more competition, the better. The more "crap, how can we make our phone as good as the XXXXX model?" that goes on, the more "better" phones we get on the market. It's been status quo for a little too long over the last few years, IMO.

Android is software. That means it could end up on a sleek well designed device, and/or on a 2 inch thick monochrome pay-as-you-go retro brick.

The iPhone isn't just software, it's hardware too, and it's the combination of those 2 things that make it what it is.

Saying Android could kick the iPhone's a$$ is like saying a new Chevy engine could kick a Porsche 911's a$$. I'll take a Porsche 911 over any Chevy, with any engine, any day, until Chevy comes out with a car that has a sweet engine AND beats the 911's overall design.

isn't android just a software which can be added to any manufacturer's phone? what does that have to do with kicking the iphones a$$? i dont get it. maybe if you said its going to kick windows mobile's a$$...... correct me if i'm wrong but isnt it just an os? so if they put it on a $50 crappy LG phone is it going to kick iphones a$$?

Posted by: photojoe83

Right. All that Google is supplying is a mobile OS. The phone manufacturers and mobile carriers within the Open Handset Alliance could still drop the ball by doing stupid ****.

Correct, but the OS is the most important part. Without a good OS, it doesn't matter how good they make the hardware. Just like OSX is the most important part of the iPhone. Sure the hardware could suck, but in some phones nowadays, the hardware is ok, it's the software that has the issues.

That's the beauty of Android. It will be a open and rich OS. And it will be running on a lot of different phones because no one phone will perfect for everyone. Some people want a small phone with a small display, some want a large phone with a large display. Some want a touchscreen keyboard, while others want a real keyboard. Some want a cheap phone, but has good features, some want a expensive fancy phone with all the bells and whistles. Etc...Etc. This is the one of the advantages it will have over the iPhone. Sure there will still be some bad Android phones out there, but I'm sure there will be a lot of great ones too.

exactly.

and for people that are worrying about hardware. at least danger and htc are on board. and i've had two htc phones (wizard, hermes) both of which had great hardware and a sucky os. imagine android on a hermes, or a sidekick. seems like a nobrainer to me.

and if android wasnt a great idea, apple execs wouldn't be on board right?

The Android OS will be open, true. Unfortunately, Google is also giving carriers full privelage to lock down the phone as much as they want. You guys are right though, this is really just a way to ensure you get Google apps on your phone. That way they can better target ads. Point is most people will never even realize they are running Android since LG's version will look and feel different than HTC's.

As for Google's track record, people love to forget the failures. Orcut? Google video? Google IM? Plus, these "30 company alliances" have a habit of falling apart and never producing anything of value. For now, it is vaporware, and certainly WAY too early to tell how good it will be.

Vaporware, is defined by Wikipedia as:
Quote:
Vaporware is a software or hardware product which is announced by a developer well in advance of release, but which then fails to emerge, either with or without a protracted development cycle.

Google announced their Android OS last month and said it will start to be available in the Summer of 2008. So technically by the above definition, it is not vaporware until it fails to show up by their release timeframe. It will be like saying Leopard was Vaporware a few months ago, which was far from true. Or saying the iPhone was vaporware between Jan and June of 2007.

There will always be doubters and naysayers with any new product. But many are very impressed with the specs and we will all see in the middle of next year how well they are implemented.

This looks really promising, I was surprised how nice the OS looked in the demo. Good healthy competition will keep Apple on their toes! These are the two best software companies in the world, this can only be a good thing.

You are right, Android is very flexible and can support many different looks and feels. Similar to Linux on the desktop, which Android is based on. And that's actually an advantage because people have different tastes for look and feel. And many Android phones will be flexible enough to change their look and feel after the consumers buys it.

Whether or not most people will realize Android is their phone's OS is debatable. And in many cases, the underlying OS should transparent to the user. The important parts are that Android is a very rich OS, includes key applications, and provides a very open and excellent platform for 3rd party apps. This will be shared by all Android phones.
