Nokia n82 or SE K850i?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Jon_A

So I need any input I can get, I am going to be buying either the nokia n82 or the k850i and I seriously cannot make up my mind. They both have a 5mp camera with xenon flash which is what I wanted, so they match up good enough there. The main differences I found were that the n82 has gps, wifi, vga recording and a 2.4 in screen. Thus making it a better choice to me, yes it is about 100 bucks more but that isn't a major issue. I have owned 4 SE phones since last Feb. and I love SE UI and I have never owned a nokia, but I have seen images of their UI and such and it doesn't look that great to me, anyways any input any of you guys have would be appreciated, especially if you have owned and nokia and a SE before. Thanks.

Well, if it were me in your situation, I would take the N82 without even glancing at the k850. You say that the $100 doesn't mean anything to you so look at how much more you'll be getting over the K850. Also, Internet reviews have said that the N82 camera and xenon flash are better than that of the K850 so basically, it's a far superior phone.

My thoughts may be a liiiiiiiitle bit biased, though.

Posted by: alsey

I don't believe the N82 has 3G/HSDPA on any other band than 2100, so if you want 3G capabilities in North America (video calls, faster tethering), go for the K850. However if that doesn't matter to you, definately go for the N82.

You r right about the camera for sure, talk about a crappy flagship by SE. Even though i am onlySE i say go for the nokia, no SE for now is worth the $$

thanks for the input guys.

Is it just me or is the N82 really ugly

Posted by: glorfingal

I have a k850i and say to you BUY THE NOKIA :-)
My experiences with their so called flagship have been less
than impressive. The previous k810i was almost flawless, so when
I get this thing with all it's "bugs" and "flaws" I was more than a
little un-happy. I'm not a lover of Nokia's but would happily trade
my k850i for an N anything right now :-(

Ya go ahead n then let us know what u have to say about it.. im sure u will like it more

What's ugly about the N82?

Posted by: mcg

SE should merge with Nokia. I don't think there would be any market competition after that. SE UI and design, Nokia hardware guts. Win-win.

i don't think nokia and se will ever merge. both are unique with their features and design, and offer their owners so much. if they merge, the same thing that happens with almost all merges, they will become complaisant, because the competition fire will die and what we have grown to love about them will no longer exist.

but on saying that, the n82 is a winner, with more features than the se, because if k850 owners are urging you to go the n82 way that says something.

Posted by: LittlePud

Admittedly the N82 is the better overall phone, though I'm going back to a K850 as I don't really like the S60 software.

That was my main issue, i am used to SE UI and i like it, i have never owned a nokia but from what i have seen of its UI, it doesn't fit my taste, but oh well.

Posted by: mcg

N82's size doesn't really suit my tastes as well; had past experiences with the N73 and it was just too chunky.

Posted by: Jon_A

Just got my n82 today, so far so good. It's size is pretty good though, it is a bit on the wider side, but not so much the thick side.

Posted by: RLP06

I really want to get an N82, with the features it offers, but I just don't like how it looks. I haven't seen it in person, but relaly don't like the pictures

Posted by: phattbam

I got the chance to see it today.. nice phone.. looks big due to it's color (white). but I like it and will be getting one soon.

Posted by: mcg

It would look big in black nevertheless, just like the N73.

probably haha.. but I got to see it today. I like it

Posted by: Mizah

Yeah the n82 is a really kick phone.

Posted by: 4mynikka

I just got the N82, ONE UGLY PHONE, but to be honest the features and stability make up for it. I think I'll eventually get over how UGLY it is unless SE comes out with a K850i with wifi then this thing is Gone.

Posted by: phattbam

why does everyone not like the look of the phone? what's wrong with it? I think it looks fine. the SE k850i has an ugly keypad. so I would find that an ugly phone but the N82 looks normal.

Posted by: Ng-83

I just commented on how ugly the N82 is on Sharp forum but ironically I just bought one today. I was getting the N95-3 but the dude did not have anything in stock. Then he showed me N82, think my liking for it will grow. 4mynikka is right, the features and stability DO make up for it. I like it so far. I also played with K850i today, and I can tell you the picture is grainy as hell. Though it feels more solid than the N82 as a phone.

Posted by: IncredibleFTA

Yeah, well I personally would buy the N82 based on its functionality. I have experience with both phones. If you like aesthetics then go with SE. If you want increased functionality while decreasing looks then go with N82. N82 is a bland looking phone but it seems appealing to me as well for what it does. I think its features such as Wi-Fi, should have been on the k850i. I think if the K850i had wifi then I wouldn't even consider the N82.

I've seem some comparos of images and I believe the N82 is winning slightly in the imaging department. Who knows though, as new SE firmware may improve it.

Posted by: mcg

I think any Wifi on a phone without a QWERTY keyboard is useless. You can browse pages on it, but it's so impractical, having to use the joystick/D-pad and numeric pad to type in an address! The Sony Ericsson P1i at least made wifi practical compared to the N95.

I personally prefer the K850i for its looks. Although it harbours a pit full of software bugs, the camera and screen quality (not to mention the UI) makes up for it. The software update to come also gives me some hope that it will be a fine cellular device by February.

The N82 though, I like it's features, but having experienced the N73, I certainly can't put up with the lagginess of the UI... K850i's UI also has "bad frame rates" compared to the K800i, but Symbian by itself is on another level in terms of slow. Perhaps the N82 may have a quicker new version of the OS, but I doubt it.

Secondly is the look of the phone. Certainly don't like it. It's big, and the keypad is cramped to less than half the height of the phone. IMHO, for ergonomics to be good, the keypad and softkeys HAVE to at least take up half (or a bit less) of the phone. Otherwise my fingers get cramped and it gets difficult to type one-handed. And of course that increases the risk of dropping the phone. K850i does well in this department, but it's gloss surface makes it slippery... although it's manageable. Bought a vinyl DIY skin from BSE and will install it on my K850i to come!

Another thing is the screen, and battery life. The N82 has a monster screen size, but the QVGA res really screws up the pixel pitch, and as a result someone pointed out that the pics come out grainy. Same thing with the N73. K850i though has a transreflective LCD (is that right?) with a 2.2" inch size, which is quite good for a QVGA resolution. Can't detect any grain at all. Looks fantastic compared to the N73 which I had back then. As for batt. life, SE has been known to have excellent lifetimes, but Nokia, that's another story. To top it off, the wifi eats away at the N82's batt life - ack.

Well, enough of my lengthy post (and boring.. llol). Will add more later.

did you type this all up on your qwerty phone?

Hey dude, didn't you just sell your K850i? Missed it already eh? To be honest, had I gotten your PM sooner I would have grabbed your K850i, but I guess it was not meant to be. Now I have a great phone, but one that is just UGLY to look at.

Posted by: mcg

Yep got rid of my K850i. But couldn't stand a backup phone, needed something good.

You PM'ed me on RFD though, but $420 was way too low. Got it sold for a bit more.

N82 is decent, but yeah, like I said above, rather save the $ haha.

And nope, don't have a QWERTY phone =/

I would have paid for the asking (well the new one). But to be honest I got a GREAT deal on my N82.

Posted by: mcg

Haha good to hear! Because I'm 100% positive you'll be selling it sometime soon. Is it just me, or does Nokia's N series really seem like it has a small lifetime with its owner... well at least to me. Haha!

well, to be honest I get bored really fast, but with the N82 I'm going to TRY to keep it for at least 1 year. I haven't had a phone for over 6-8 weeks in the last 24 months so we'll see.

I think I'll try to do the same with the K850i. Keep it for a while at least.

Posted by: vkwan

Hi All,

just wanna give my 2 cents as well. I was one of the early adopters of the k850i and i've always been an SE fan. I have pretty well owned most of their phones over the past several years and thought i would never leave. However the k850i had me a little disappointed. Reception has been solid on it and the 1+ month i used it, it crashed twice, nothing major but the picture quality was really poor. the k790a shots where better were much better when looking at the pictures at 100%. In addition, browsing picture to picture would take 3 seconds to see the image and another 3 seconds for it to render. The two main benefits i bould think that this phone has is battery life is a little stronger and 850/1900 HSPDA. Normally i get about 4 days inbetween charges but with the N82 l need to charge every 3 days.

Granted that the N82 does not have the 850/1900 for 3.5G which on the rogers network here in canada, is suppose to increase reception and call quality, i can still make calls in p2 of my parking lot in my condo. I was never able to ever get any reception from any of my SE phones (k790a, w810, s500, w580, z550, etc. etc.) despite the lack of NA freq for 3.5G and 1 less day of batt life but the picture quality i would say goes to Nokia. The s60 os is a bit diff from what i'm used to but not bad at all. Having to make sure i exit all application to ensure i don't eat up the batt life but the speed on the N82 i would say is faster than the k850. Video cap is better.. playback is better by far.. i encode a lot of mp4's of tv shows and there was always lag on the SE phones unless i set the bitrate to 300kb/s but nokia can handle 2mb/s easily without lag. I can use all the jar games i found for the SE on the nokia. screen is larger and same as the good old k790. sorry guys.. maybe if SE can come out with something really impressive.. i will be with nokia for a while.

I will try to keep this N82 as long as possible.. unless they come with a N82-3 in black or white, i might say this is a keeper.. well at least for 1 yr hhahah.

Posted by: Jon_A

This is a bit off topic, but i must say the reception i get with the N82 is better then any SE i have ever owned (w900,p990,w610,w850) in a store such as target my SE would give me the emergency calls only, but with the N82 at my job which is inside a big building i get full bars and even in target i still get service i am very pleased with the reception.

Posted by: Paul in SoCal

So where'd you guys pick up your N82's?

Posted by: mcg

N82 is getting pretty cheap now. Lowest I see is $585 brand new!

Posted by: Jon_A

I got mine from importgsm.com and since i used there upgrade program and mailed in an old phone, i got my N82 for about 445$, including shipping.

Posted by: BlueCalx

Does anyone have one that's not white? Where'd you get it?

Posted by: K Royal

@vkwan

You read my mind.
I just waiting until mid-January to get my N82 because right now is expensive as hell.
But you're right, SE needs a phone like this, or don't go too far, just like a N73 to start.

Posted by: bodeh6

I too am not that impressed with the K850i. If The N82-3 comes out then that will be my next phone. Just gonna wait till March before deciding what phone I get. I would have had my K790a for a year then.

Doesn't anyone else here think it's strange how similar both companies design their products?

Both companies seem to follow suit in the following:
-top Power button selects profiles, both use Normal, Meeting, Outdoors as names
-both companies use some form of Menu * to lock the keypad
-Nokia and SE are the only manufacturers that I have noticed who consistently have FM radios on most models

When it comes to the PC software that both companies use, is it my imagination or does the Nokia PC Suite icon in some versions on the systemtray look shockingly like an inverted Sony Ericsson logo? Based on what I can recall, software from both companies also seem to install some form of "PC Connectivity Software."

I'm wondering if they had a joint venture at one point.

well - ive had my n82 for a little over a week so far and i gotta say - this thing is awesome

although its not the best looking phone - its definitely growing on me - and the features MORE than make up for its looks:

-- its size is great for me (about 10mm longer than the k850 - the rest of the specs are pretty much the same - and honestly, when youre putting the thing in your pocket, its the thickness that matters - both phones clock in at 17mm - and both phones will fit in your pocket comfortably)
-- the wifi is just awesome - yesterday i was in the hospital for about 8 hours - hopped on their free wifi, was able to check my email, chat with a buddy on gtalk, post on the forums, post to my blog, and watch youtube videos (that is, when i wasnt listening to streaming radio) - all without a hitch
-- the gps is incredible (ESPECIALLY with google maps - its just insane how google created that software - even on the edge network the maps pop up within 5 seconds) - while i did all of the above - i managed to find the nearest starbucks (took about 30 seconds) - and once inside the starbucks, i was able to connect to the wifi network there - lol
-- the camera on it is fantastic - finally, a nokia that takes pictures that dont look like you have the settings set to "vivid" all the time (and the xenon flash is a LOT more powerful than it is on my k790i)
-- the video recording aspect - although this will be mostly for novelty - its still really cool - you can record a video and actually see what is happening rather clearly (on the phone or on the tv - which you can connect with the included rca tv-out cables)
-- the keypad is very comfortable to text with (and for the record - i GUARANTEE i can type faster using t9 than anyone can using a qwerty keypad with their THUMBS - granted, i can type faster using an actual qwerty keyboard at a computer - but on a phone? t9 is FAR quicker - theres not even a debate - once you get used to t9, typing is SUPER speedy)
-- the speed of symbian has GREATLY improved over the n73 and n95-1 days - i was shocked - if you look through some of my older posts, youll see that i was HUGE about chastising nokia for putting out such horribly slow ui's - all of that has changed - the ONLY time i experience lag is when i have a BUNCH of applications running (opera mini, the contacts list, a new message, the im program, the photo gallery, the music player and google maps - as i exited opera mini, i noticed it took a little while - then i realized i had all that stuff running in the background), or when im saving a long video file that was just recorded
-- the battery life is surprisingly good - after all that messing around yesterday at the hospital (with wifi on for 8 hours straight) - i came home with 4/8 bars still left on the battery - right now, i have 2 bars left (ill definitely have to charge it tonite - but with my "normal" usage - itll go for 2-3 solid days - about on par with the k790i)

so far - ive had only a single crash of the phone - but that was after i had installed some shady 3rd party app i found online for running a screen saver (stupid, i know)- it actually worked for all but one screen saver (which caused the phone to reboot) - after that, i uninstalled that app and havent had a single issue since

overall - i couldnt be happier - when the k850 was first announced, there wasnt a doubt in my mind that i was going to get it - luckily, i didnt do what i wanted to do (and that was purchase it the first day it was released) - so i waited for the price to go down and by that time (within a week), there were numerous reports of all of the bugs - thats when i went hunting and "discovered" the n82

i bought the n82 and a 6gb minisdhc card - i couldnt be happier

bottom line if youre considering these 2 models:
- if youre on att's network and absolutely require 3g - then youll have to go with the k850
- if youre not on att's network - then take a serious look at the n82 - youll probably be pleasantly surprised

well - that was pretty long-winded - but thats my take!

Posted by: mcg

Good stuff... the phone I know for sure is packed with features, but it's no good if it doesn't look good

Posted by: Kricket

^ lol - im actually the exact opposite - ive never been a fan of "all show, no go" with anything really (phones, electronics in general, cars, etc) - but a lot of people are - i mean, look at the razr and iphone popularity - a lot of people buy phones based on looks so i guess im in the minority

EDIT - before i get flamed - i did buy an iphone - but i knew full well going in that i wasnt going to use it for anything more than a really spiffy internet tablet (i actually think its been 3 months since a sim card has been inside of it - )

Posted by: mcg

Oh, well, what I meant is that a balance of both is needed... a good looking phone with no features is one that I won't even touch.. I'm not one to buy a showoff phone. And this goes for phones with lots of features and no aesthetic qualities. Sure, it may be what you perfectly need, but some people (like me) tend to at least carry a phone that is bearable to look at while using it.

I'd say the N82 would be perfect if it somewhat followed the design of the N95... a black finish, with minimal glossy surfaces.

The K850i on the other hand has way too many glossy surfaces, but since I am quite used to the SE interface, I went with this phone instead. Combined with its decent looks and features, this was my first choice.

Perhaps when the N95 8GB goes down in price, I may try to look for a steal on that phone, but for the time being, I'll live with the K850i.

Posted by: Kricket

^ you might be interested in something like this:

http://www.mobilecityonline.com/wir...productid=23007

EDIT - and to my surprise - everyone that has seen my n82 has actually complimented me on it - i was getting my haircut last nite and everyone in the shop wanted to play with it telling me how "cool" it looked - lol

i mean, it does look a lot better in person than it does in the pictures, but that was ridiculous!

Posted by: ice13water

ive been using my k800i for just over 2 months and i was thinking about going k850i
now im considering the N82 but

do the nokia 5MP shots come out as nice as the SE shots
does their flashh olight up a whole room in complete darkness like the k850i does
and how well does the GPS work

also my friend had a N80 now tilt but the n80 felt like a toy when in hand compared to the k800i. the body of it feels very cheap and fragile

what do u think

Posted by: Jon_A

i like the look of the N82 alot, i like the nice shine the back has when the light hits it and the silver on the front, i like it. =]

Posted by: break-r

N82 for sure.

I played with a k850 last weekend, and I cant stand the keypad layout.

Also the N82 offers so much more.

Take away the 5mp camera with xenon flash, and the k850 is just another SE with horrible keys. (Not to say the N82 keys are great either). At least with the N82, it still offers wifi, GPS, and the ability to add applications

Posted by: ice13water

does the n82 come with a memory card or should i go buy one

cause i think i have my mind set

Posted by: Kricket

^ the n82 comes with a 2gb memory card - but make sure the place youre purchasing from didnt take it out to offer a more "appealing" price (i think timstech.com took out the card and charged much less than other outfits)

of course, if youre planning on purchasing a larger card, that might be a better option for you...

What phone did you trade in? Did they give you a reasonable price quote? I might try to trade in a duo for an n82.

Posted by: Jon_A

I traded in my old w900i, they gave me a quote I thought was good enough, I also checked the quote for my w850i but I decided to keep it for a back up phone just in case. The weird thing though is no more than 2 weeks later I went back to the website and just checked the quote for my w850i again and the quote went down about 75 bucks less.

Posted by: UFO_Sasquatch

Funny, I've had my N82 for a day now and I still want the K850i, issues and all. I like the N82 but I feel like I'm missing the SE UI and build quality. The D-pad (on mine at least) is by the far one of the worst I've used. Beyond cheap feeling. It's like it came off a different model and was added at the last second. It simply doesn't feel positive.

Considering all it does it's hard not to like the N82. But in the same token I can understand why people have sold it. Not sure about the build quality of the K850i as I've never owned one, but all of the SE phones I've had with the exception of the K550i felt like they were put together better. The N82 ain't pretty, feels real plasticky but it certainly has the goods to back up the mediocre looks and feel. In the end it's a K850i for me, though.

Posted by: pouya12

i think nokia n82 is best becase have gps and sembyan os .with xenon

Posted by: Nokiaman21

My d-pad is really solid feeling to me atleast. I havent owned a SE since well...... maybe 6 years ago and it had an attachable camera lol . So im sure they have come far since those days, but I have been very happy with all the n series Nokias ESPECIALLY my new N82 !!!

Posted by: mcg

I feel the d-pad on my N95-8GB is less solid than the K850i. That's my opinion only, and can vary among handsets

Can't wait to get back to the K850i. Just gotta wait till February for prices to drop and updates to roll out!

Posted by: ice13water

does any one know if the hbh-ds970 or the hbh-ds980 sonyericsson stereo bluetooth headsets will work with the N82?

Posted by: Jon_A

The ds970 works for sure, cause that's what i use with my N82, the only thing is it won't display anything on the OLED lcd, but you can control the volume and change the songs from the ds970.

Posted by: ice13water

nice good to know

did u get urs through ebay
if so can u let me know what seller

Posted by: Jon_A

Naw, I got mine through plemix.com. After buying a fake memory card through eBay months back I am now very skeptical of buying any accessories, not saying there aren't honest sellers on eBay, I just would rather stick to a legit site.

Posted by: FidoFan

I'm tempted by the N82, but the lack of UMTS 850/1900 is a problem. It's good to know that it WILL be coming in black, but will they make a black UMTS 850/1900 version? If they do, that'd be very, very tempting. I actually still love my K790. But I'm kinda curious to try out Symbian again. As long as the N82 isn't as slow as my E61 was.
