Light dimming

Hello,

Just got the p800 over the weekend. I really like it more than I thought I would, it's great. A few Q's.....I did look through the whole thread (mostly)

Does anyone notice their screen dimming when moving between applications & just randomly dimming now & again (not related to auto dimming after a min. or two). I may have a funky unit.

Where in the Bay Area can I have it flashed/upgraded

How do I get rid of Cingular logo (on screen) I have a tmo sim in it.

I got a HK unit I think, because when I write with JOT it comes in as Chinese. I can probably put US English on the unit, but will that take up space. What I am saying is, should I have gotten a unit for US & not a HK one, as putting other lanugauges on it takes up internal memory. Phew, now I am confused

thanks in advance.

That's not screen dimming that you're noticing. The background changes to a darker hue while loading an application. It's normal.

A quick search in this forum will yield the contact information for all businesses and/or people performing firmware upgrades in the US. All but one of them are in SoCal, I think.

Upgrading to the R2A firmware will cause the correct operator logo to be displayed.

As for the Chinese Jot, it sounds like you have a P802. That character set uses up a considerable amount of extra memory. I think it's about 4MB. Doesn't matter though. You can just have the normal P800 firmware flashed to your phone.

Thanks for the reply. Very helpful.
Shall return this one & opt. for a US based one.

Amd,

As funny as it sounds I’ve came across a few P800 that is not a P802 and is a UK release (not an Asian Release) but it only comes with “Chinese JOT.” After going through all the software in the box I was not able to find an “English JOT.” The only way to get an “English JOT” is to get you unit flashed.

Yes, that IS the screen dimming, if your phone behaves like mine. The backlight appears to have two brightness settings - not user-configurable, of course - and will dim:

1) During task-switching
2) After the normal display auto-off period, if set to "On" in the display settings control panel app. That is, instead of turning off like it would if set to "Auto," it merely dims.

This is especially noticeable when using an application like Mobipocket reader with the backlight set to "on."

I believe you're mistaken about the screen dimming during task-switching. On any of the P800s I've seen, the background only darkens while switching tasks. You can verify this by looking at the menu bar at the top and the status bar at the bottom. These two bars remain the same brightness level and color during task-switching. Therefore, it can not be the screen itself dimming.
