Cellular ONE switching to ATT Tomorrow in WV

I was wondering when cellular one switching to ATT tomorrow if the service for data will be 3G. I'm currently with us cellular, and they don't have a data plan, but I am tethering, but I was hoping that att data would be a lot quicker then us cellular. My current download speeds are only 10kbs, is att any better then that. What is the data speeds for ATT in a non 3G area.

In which town do you reside in West Virginia? You can check out the coverage map at http://wireless.att.com/coverageviewer and select "Data" to see if you will have 3G services in your area. I serously doubt you will if you're only getting 10KB/sec from what service you have now.

10kB/s should be the minimum you would get from ATT, depending on how loaded the network is in your area, typically you will see 18-28kB/s on EDGE. I just ran a benchmark here on EDGE and got 207kbit/s (25kB/s) on a 200kB download test on the first try.

probably not. i'm in Charleston (their biggest market) and they keep pushing it back. if you're on CellOne, which seems to be the rural areas, I doubt you're going to have 3G coverage. Which part of the state are you in?

Well we were in the AT&T store here in Clarksburg WV upgrading from CellOne to AT&T and they said that AT&T was planning to upgrade the northern part of the state (Weston, Clarksburg, Fairmont, Morgantown)---first since they have to upgrade Cellular One's network and in turn they have decided to go fast-upgrade it to 3G and then move down to the Charleston/Huntington area and migrate their network to 3G.

Heck up here you still have to dial the area code before you call anyone which you don't have to do with AT&T in Charleston/Huntington. They said that 3G service up here in Northern WV would not be ready until mid-spring to -early summer. They had no time frame on the Charleston, or Huntington markets.

what would they have to upgrade on CellOne's towers? They're GSM. All theyd have to do is change the broadcast name. i cant see why clarksburg, morgantown or fairmont would get 3G first, i believe Charleston/Huntington has twice the population size of those three areas.

i really wonder if NO ONE knows what the hell they're talking about and the sales weasels just say that 3G is coming at each locality first just to get us to buy better phones.

its frustrating. i was home for the holidays in King George, VA, a BIG verizon area (although was glad that GSM is now in the area). in the middle of nowhere, verizon has EV-DO. WHAT THE HELL AT&T?!?! get on the ball!

Basically they meant that Cellular One's data network is a very poor network and cannot handle the IPHONE up here as they tested it and it just did not work on CELL ONES network hence why they are upgrading us first since it already has to be done and they might as well upgrade it up to 3G. I am just going by what they are saying.

Wirelessly posted (SAMSUNG-SGH-A707/1.0 SHP/VPP/R5 NetFront/3.3 SMM-MMS/1.2.0 profile/MIDP-2.0 configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.1.17.0)

The original at&t legacy markets are being looked at for 3G launch, and beyond that based on market needs. Most areas are supposed to get 3G sometime in 08 but not every at&t owned tower everywhere will get 3G, that wouldnt make sense and in reality, isnt possible considering all the sites.

hrm.. it seems to me that 3G is a network overhaul much like TMDA > GSM was. while GSM wont be going anyway anytime soon ( we saw how long it too for them to get rid of TDMA. i thought they werent aggressive enough on consumers ), 3G is going to replace it at some point. it only makes sense. they will upgrade all towers eventually as UMTS is the upgrade path from EDGE/GSM. since its the only way that AT&T can remain competitive with Sprint/Verizon, it makes more sense than leaving some of the towers running EDGE/GSM.

All of this is so frustrating since they dont seem to keep their word on when its getting rolled out. i undestand that there are many parties involved when upgrading towers, but at least they could give the consumers realistic dates..or quit pushing back the date. its rude and slimy especially when the sales folks use the 'upcoming launch' to sell you a 3G phone and you sort of rely on that. hell, if i had known it would be pushed back again , i would have bought an iPhone instead of a Samsung A737 (i hate this phone).

in addition, thanks for all of the info. i'm going to call my rep today to see what he says here in Charleston.

The population around the Charleston Huntington area isn't as different as it is here in the Morgantown to Clarksburg corridor of I-79. Charleston's is just more concentrated along the interstate making it seem crowded. Morgantown is supposed to surpass both cities within the next few years in terms of population and job growth, most of which it has done the past few years posting the only positive job and population growth in the state beating out fellow positive gainer Martinsburg. I think Morgantown's close access to Pittsburgh is what is spurring this intrest in upgrading our area first into 3G. I mean really its only 30-45 mins to the 3G market in Pittsburgh. The area up here is growing so rapidly and the jobs coming in and the universities are probably helping push this matter. WVU has refused to switch over to at&t just yet and I think having access to using the 3G is helping spur the upgrades along with the iPhone intrest. So far the two corporate stores have seen iPhones flying off shelves. The mall store supposedly sold around 20 on Sunday when we were open 12-6pm. So there are still multiple reasons but I feel Morgantown is the right place to launch 3G first, if its not already in Wheeling, because of the university and the other factors that continue to make Morgantown explode with population and job growth. I think since the state capital workers get the advantage of having whomever is another reason why its been slow. at&t will become the exclusive carrier partner of the university here which includes thousands of employees and over 28,000 students. So far there has been a huge influx of international students coming into town this semester adding new service with highly advanced 3G phones including Nokia's N95 which I have seen 3 of in the past week I've started working. Its amazing how fast things are going and how crazy its been for stores to keep phones in stock.

Something I did notice over the past few days here in Charleston. I keep losing EDGE and getting dumped back onto GPRS all weekend. Problems also included sending and recieving MMS. This morning, EDGE is back up and MMSs are sending and receiving RiDICULOUSLY fast 3-4 times as fast as they did before. So who knows.

As far as the upgrade of 3G. I dont doubt the growth and density of Morgantown. It would be a smart move to upgrade that area to 3G. However, high iPhone sales is not an impetus to push a carrier to 3G. It uses EDGE.

Also: With the FCC no longer requiring analog services after Feb 18, 2008, I think we'll see massive 3G upgrades. (Does ATT even have any analog bands?). I've already been told that the 3G network IS built in Charleston, they're just testing it and awaiting the approval to go live.

So who knows. sales jockeys will say anything to get you to stick with a carrier who has/will have 3G services. We'll see when it goes live.

I didn't mean to imply that the iPhone sales were the definate cause of 3G coming to Morgantown sorry for that I just mean the demand is so high right now in Morgantown and the surrounding area for at&t services that stores are practicaly sold out of everything. We are down to just one or two of each phone some gone completely. I know the mall at&t store is out of practically everything. I heard a handful of iPhones were left, they were out of the Duo and Shine, and a tiny amount of Tilts were available. I didn't get to ask about the others because the store was busy when I was in. Its going to be like this for awhile.

I know Marshall University in Huntington, WV which was the first university in the nation to offer free cell phone service to its students has decided to discontinue the program. West Virginia Wireless provided the service up until this year when they were bought out by Verizon Wireless and Ntelos took over for this year. And the plans were all unlimited.

And from what I have heard they plan to let all the cell phone carriers to offer discounts to all students.

This is the feature TECHTV did on the university before G4 screwed the network up. http://www.g4tv.com/techtvvault/fea...cle_key=4749 1
