Ladies and Gents! let Internet Connection Sharing live again on BJ2 & BJ1 w/ WM6!!!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: chudy2

OK everybody, good news for those who missed ICS!!!

I finally got ICS working on my BJ2 and am 99.9% confident the same method will work on BJ1!!

It was tested and verified on my BJ2 and I will need someone to verify it for BJ1.

It was a tough nut to crack but seems so obvious in retrospect

I am hoping the same problem prevented Carousel from working and will get cracking on it next week...

I will wrap the ICS component in a nice little package and you should expect it within the next 12-18 hours for you enjoyment!!!

Posted by: CocheseUGA

Hey hey, alright!

Posted by: bert269

hey...let us know when it's ready to distribute.
Thanks for the great work!

Posted by: chudy2

got hung up trying to get carousel working last night so i didnt get around to wrapping this up...

unfortunately i cant get carousel to work...oh well..

i'll post a cab this evening hopefully (busy till then) and will definitely share the stuff with da_g for when he's ready to cook a new rom...

update: one step forward...now carousel.dll and others are loading at bootup on my phone but still nothing on the screen :P to be continued...

Posted by: herbaliser

nice work getting it to boot chudy. More excited for carousel but I also understand and appreciate working on ICS first. You and Da_G should open up a samsung phone freelance company.

Posted by: chudy2

ok, im giving up on carousel...can't get it to work without really starting to hack stuff around and without a rom kitchen it's getting kinda hard...and im running out of motivation.

one thing's for sure though; this is not a standalone homescreen and it's microsoft's doing...i bet it's winmo 6.1 carousel interface precursor.

it's got some deep rooted dependencies and i ran out of threads to pull so i'm putting it on the backburner now. i'll document where i've gotten so far and maybe someone will be advanterous enough to keep going but with the imminent release of winmo 6.1 i'm not sure it's worth the effort.

i think its a problem with mismatched ddraw/d3d components...

with that said i'll get going on wrapping up ics and will publish it soon...as usual it takes 15% of the time to get 85% complete and then 85% of time to finish the last 15% :P

Posted by: Goofus

I'm pitching a tent right now for ICS.

Posted by: godashram

can't wait for this one...

Posted by: chudy2

OK, who wants to be a guinea pig?

there might be some kinks with the cab file but otherwise it shoudl work...

ok so here's the procedure:

Step0: Make sure your device is app unlocked!!**(see below note!)
Step1: Install the cab file (it might ask you to reboot)
Step2: navigate to \My Documents and click on the .pfx file and leave password blank; run secpolicies.cab first if unsure or the .pfx file wont take!!
Step3: reset device again
Step4: go to start and run intshrui/internet sharing
Step5: report back and lemme know if i fux0red anything up :P

this should work on both BJ1/WM6 and BJ2/WM6

file is temporarily hosted at:
http://www.mdots.net/misc/BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab

**for anyone having issues getting ICS to work (ie connect doesn't work), run this cab and reboot; http://sems.org/content/download/secpolicies.cab

Posted by: rhsauer

when you click on the .pfx file, it asks for a password

Posted by: chudy2

Quote:

yea, just added that to my notes above, leave it blank

btw, redownload the cab file as i just realized the first ver wont install the internet sharing link properly...

Posted by: rhsauer

Brilliant! Am posting this via Bluetooth/ICS connection from BJII to WinXP notebook. Speedtest shows about 500kbps down and 200kbps up. You 'da man, chudy2! Thanks for what I'm sure was a LOT of hard work.

Posted by: dd-mj

Can you remind me how to unlock the BJII?

Posted by: akessler

doesn't seem to work on my BJI, WM6, latest flash
i run ICS from Start
i press left soft key that says connect (PC connection set to Bluetooth PAN) and the screen flashes briefly and then returns to menu state.

PC and phone paired and Join a Personal Area Network set up on PC

is your phone app unlocked?? if so which method did you use?

**see my OP...run secpolicies.cab

Posted by: grinny11

same for me with my blackjack 1 and ICS even with usb mode. screen just blinks and nothing happens. tries installing the securities cab and still nothing.

Posted by: jnmarshall

No go with a BJ1. Tried with MAC OS 10.5.1, WinXp(SP2) and Vista.
Walking the BTStack, seems there's no PAN profile on the BJ1 version of WM6.

Posted by: dodgefinance

Not working on my BJ2. Mine is app inlocked and i followed your instructions. I have the bj2 connected via usb and its not connecting just flashes then nothing.

Posted by: godashram

no luck so far using usb with bj1...

Posted by: chudy2

ok guys....i just hard reset my bj2 and will follow my own instructions from scratch to see why it's not working...
stay tuned..

Posted by: rhsauer

FWIW, my WinXP notebook doesn't report the BJII as having a PAN service when I look at Properties under Bluetooth devices -- but it connects via PAN without a hiccup

Posted by: Jakaroe808

No luck here.. BJ1 WM6 GI3.. I have been lurking lately but this thread has got me posting again.. Hope you have some more tricks up your sleeves as this is some great work..

Posted by: chudy2

OK, take two...
for some reason I can't seem to get cert automated...revised instructions below.

MAKE SURE TO RE-DOWNLOAD THE CAB AS IT IS CHANGED!!

ok so here's the NEW procedure:

Step0.0: Make sure your device is app unlocked!!**(see below note!); run secpolicies.cab first if unsure or the certs won't take!!
Step0.1 RESET THE DEVICE!
Step1: Install the BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable cab file (it might ask you to reboot)
Step2: navigate to \My Documents and click on the certs.cab file
Step3: RESET THE DEVICE!
Step4: go to start and run internet sharing
Step5: report back and lemme know if i fux0red anything ELSE up :P

this should work on both BJ1/WM6 and BJ2/WM6

file is temporarily hosted at:

**run this cab and reboot; http://sems.org/content/download/secpolicies.cab

Chudy.. You Rock.. Followed "Take Two" and worked like a charm.. I'm up and running on my BJ1 with WM6 as we speak.. Charging and all.. This is so sick and should be cooked into a new ROM.. Great Work..

looks like it works but doesnt report properly? i don't have a bt dongle so i cant verify...i'll double check to see that i didnt miss anything with the settings...it's possible bj1 stack is different than bj2 as well...

when i have time i'll investigate further

Posted by: wamiller

Works fine for me, I just followed the directions.
Running BJI with WM6 connected over BT to a Thinkpad running XP

Posted by: godashram

working here as well. not the fastest.... but working, which is more important!

Posted by: Jakaroe808

I'll also add that I have it working on a Vista machine.. Thanks again Chudy..

All fingers would point to me then! I followed the directions as well not sure why it's not working through the BT stack, no big deal though as long as the USB works.

Posted by: akessler

chudy2,
i was app unlocked already, but now downloaded your latest version and voila, working like a charm

great to have ICS
this on my BJI, latest flashes for WM6, using Bluetooth PAN

thank you, thank you, thank you.
you da man and i both honor and respect this effort!

me thinks we are down to one last hassle with WM6 on the BJI, and that is the whacky Bluetooth stack and being able to use MS Voice Commander to do voice dialinig.

Posted by: dodgefinance

works perfect!!!!!! your the man!!!

Posted by: ol2

VERY COOL - Working Here!!! Thank You.

Posted by: opticalc

this message was posted using my ICS bluetooth tether to my BJII (WM6 of course)

OUTSTANDING thanks so much for the excellent work.

IS there anything we need to be aware of when trying to install ms voice command for wm6 smartphone on the BJII? A previous post stated somthing to lead me to believe that was a problem.

Thanks again!

Posted by: Kevad007

Great! Working on BJ1 with orginal ROM, updated to latest PDA WM6.

Is this what is referred to as "Sticking it to the Man!"

Posted by: Kevad007

I am getting solid full Bars great 3G signal here at my office and phone is getting aprox. 550kps +/- about 80kbps on tests. When connecting to laptop via the ICS/USB, I am only getting about half that again USB and Media Max settings. Several tests and file downloads show 27 to 32KP per second (so times 8 = 216 to 256 kbps, and some of the tests are over several minutes. On my dsl connection, speeds of same sites are at my set rate of aprox. 1500kbps, so its not the sites. Anyone else do some tests yet? At least here its like its maxing out at just over EDGE max. speeds, not really getting 3G speeds, but my set is clearly getting 3G, I am right near a tower and get good signal. I'll try it off of other 3G towers on my way home tonight to see if its just this location. I used to get pretty much full speed on ICS with WM5 BJ I, although its a busy area near the freeway and I usually get under 600Kbps under best conditions here.

Can anyone confirm this works on a mac. I've been thinking of upgrading from my BJ1 to the BJ2 but cant afford to loose my BT ICS. I'm on a macbook with OS 10.4.11. Thanks!

Posted by: jazzy001

Does not work for me.

Can't run BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab successful. Both time indicated "Installation of BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab was unsuccessful"

I have B4 for Phone & Eboot with I3 as PDA. I have to use this combination in order for Credant to work on my phone.

I had app unlocked before unsed SDA, also tried app unlock again used secpolicies.cab, but still can't install BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab. Both secpolicies.cab & BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab were download used Opera Mobiles

google for appunlock.cab and install it
reboot the phone
install secpolicies.cab
reboot the phone
install ics.enable cab again and see if it works...

I can confirm this is working on my BJ2 with Bluetooth connected to my Ubuntu 7.10 Linux laptop.

Probably a silly question, and if I read enough it would be answered...but exactly what does ICS do for you? Does it allow you to connect your computer to the net via phone when there isn't a WiFi connection available?

Obviously I don't have a (known) need for it, otherwise I would know what it is....

I also noted another user here downgraded to WM5 because of a need for RSK? What is that?

I've had my BJ for a year now, but I'm sure I'm not using it to it's fullest potential.

Thanks...I'm learning....

When I hit the link I get to download an iCalendar file: BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.ics instead of BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab
How's that happening? Should I just rename the file?

I hard reset BJ, & perform following step, still does not work.

Hard Reset
Reboot
Install "appunlock.cab" ok
Reboot
Install "secpolicies.cab" ok
Reboot
Install "..ics.Enable.cab" unseccessful

I have I3 PDA with B4 Phone & Eboot. I have to use this combination for compatibility with Credant require as work phone.

in a nutshell, it allows you to tether with your phone more easily (instead of putting it into usb modem mode and doing dialup), so if you have pda connect or laptop connect data plan which allows you to tether, it negates the need for an extra modem...
it also allows for better interworking with a mac/linux box since they dont have activesync equivalents.

sorry, dont know what to tell you base on others it should work fine...

try re-downloading it and/or using your pocket ie to download it (first time it will be garbled, let it finish and repeat)

Posted by: Halorin

Followed the instructions, still no deal for me.. Windows Vista, Blackjack II. It just freezes at Identifying on the computer.
EDIT:

Scratch that. I found that appunlock.cab thing and it worked! I guess the popular SDA Unlock thing doesn't fully unlock it.

I have a BJ I on the latest cooked rom and am running vista. It appears Vista never gets a DHCP address from the phone. Actually looking at the BJ connection I see packets being sent but none received. The phone shows connected but doesn't work. For anyone who has this working what IP information does your PC get, what dns, and gateway? Maybe I can manually input those in and get around this, but I doubt it.

that sounds like a computer problem...try it on a different machine and see if it works.

in general, if you can get passed the connection point, where the phone allows you to connect and the left soft button changed to 'disconnect' with 'Connected" on top of the screen, then this patch did exactly what it was supposed to and the problem is elsewhere...

your phone in ics mode works like a router, so try setting your computer to 192.168.0.102, your dns and gateway should both be 192.168.0.1 which is the phone's IP address.

Tried doing manual IP settings and no go. I don't have any other computers to try this on so I'll have to do some more digging. I figure I have a driver somewhere that needs to be reinstalled no doubt from when I was futzing around trying to get vista to let me put the cooked rom onto my BJ.

You are the man!

You are right, it is the file I download use Opera Mobile for some reason does not work. It is working right now with file download & run from IE.

Posted by: chudy2

FYI, I've noticed that if you monkey around with the "Security Configuration Manager", it might wipe out the certificates necessary for ICS to work...

if you ever get into that situation, either reinstall the bj.wm6.ics.enable cab file or just reinstall certs.cab if you have it....

Posted by: jazzy001

Could I move "..enable cab", "cert cab", & "secpolicies cab" into SD card, & run it from SD card? or I must copy back to "/My Documents" & run from there?

hard resetting wouldnt make sense now would it :P at every step you'd be wiping out any/all progress hehe

i mean reset/reboot not hard-reset/wipe

Posted by: znutar

well, it works! I'm getting a long ping (449 ms), but with 4 bars of 3G I'm getting 1113 down and 105 up which is better than I was getting via DUN. Interestingly, even though I'm in WA, speedtest is listing my nearest server as Florida...weird. Chudy2, where do I send the money, you are awesome!

BTW I'm posting via tether right now!!

Posted by: chvynut

Wow Chudy, words cannot express how grateful I am that you not only got this to work, but you made it so easy. Thank you. The shortcut in the start menu is a great touch. Posting this on my XP laptop using the USB tether. I will try the BT tomorrow as I left it at work.

Thanks to this forum and the work of it's members, I have WM6 on my BJI with all sorts of tweaks. Where do I send the Xmas present!?

Hi guys,
finally found some time to do this. I am sure this is pilot error but I cant get it to work. I followed the instructions to the letter, installe all three files in order, rebooted after each and all appear to have installed correctly. I am using windows vista with mobile device manager and my BJ2. When I select ICS, there is a connect button that assume that I press, but nothing happens. Can someone help?

Thanks,

BP

Posted by: Kevad007

It sounds like you did do this, but just in case did you do this?

You are being punished by the phone gods, cause you got too good a deal on your BJ II

Is there going to be a way later today for you to try it on a 2nd computer, or an XP computer. It sounds like its correct on the phone (unless you didn't do Step 2 above or maybe try another App Unlock program), and something going on with the computer settings (did you see in the one post back a few the comments that in some cases you may need to hard code in DNS settings?).

I know, I am a good negotiator!

The laptop last connected to the internet through my wireless router at the home office.
I know I must have installed this correctly because I did the same thing on my BJ1 and have the same issue on the vista laptop. I have a desktop that runs xp that I could try. Is there anything else I need to do like set up a connection on the computer to get it to connect?

Posted by: Parsonsbri

Ok. now I feel like a dork. Somehow I misunderstood the certs file bit.
I installed the secpolicies cab but did no click on the certs. I did that and rebooted.

Now, after doing that, when I click on the connect soft key, the status screen says "waiting for network". Are there any settings I need to change on the laptop? (I feel it...so close...)

Sounds like there could be some issues with Vista. I'll see if I can get my phone to connect on a pristine vista system at work, and I might be able to drum up an XP system there too which would let us know if just Vista is having issues.

Posted by: Parsonsbri

This makes no sense. Maybe just the quirks of the setup. Now it is working fine. Downloading at 652kbps. I'll take it.

Any chance you can provide a "manual" process of providing the files and registry settings provided in the CABs? This could assist some of those folks having problem by doing the process manually.

Got it working on XP with a BJ1(WM6), will try my Vista and Mac tonite.

Posted by: chudy2

If cabs dont work, it's possible to de-compile a cab file with utilities such as MSCEInf to actually see the individual files and reg entries...

Well I've tried this on two different computers now with my BJ I latest cooked wm6 rom. Phone shows connected but on the PC I see packets being sent, but not received. Both are vista systems. I'm going to perform a hard reset this evening and see if I can get it to work. If anyone else is seeing this behavior please post.

OK, I actually just did this. I did a hard reset, used the SDA application unlock. Installed the ICS software via my SD card, ran the certs from My documents, rebooted, and then attempted to connect. I get the same behavior, cell shows connected and packets sent from PC but none received. Also, I presume I should change the Network Connection to MEdia Net from AT&T IMS. When using AT&T IMS it always comes back with "Error the remote party has ended this connection".

I had same problem. When you click on link to download file click save as, and add ".cab" at end of file name. Should work then.

I used appunlock.cab to unlock before install ICS required cabs, after hard reset, & ICS working after that. But I was not able to remove some of the unused files in "\Application Data\Home" with just appunlock.cab I installed. I end up have to use SDA again after ICS are fully setup. It look like to me they both unlock different area of directory.

That was the problem. Note had that I had to do a hard reset in order to get it to install correctly, although I did not try hard nor did I try to remove it through remove programs. Since my phone was already pretty much a blank state a hard reset wasn't a big deal for me. Thanks for your work in getting this going. If Samsung/Microsoft/ATT worked half as hard as this community does at getting things working we'd be on WM8 by now...

I was standing in my own way like usual! The ICS patch works completely, bt pan and usb. I just uninstalled what I had in stalled before, and redid the steps, like stated before I did the appunlock.cab as well as SDAUnlock. And that fixed the issue. Once again thanks for you hard work!!

Chudy2,
Ok so this is what I did, downloaded both cab files, installed the secpolicies first and then rebooted, then the bj.wm6, which wierdly when I download it it's a another file extension, so I renamed it to cab, I installed it, rebooted, then I went to my documents and saw the certs file and installed that too, after this I rebooted again,
I am able to click on the ics icon in the start menu, however, when it connects, it only gives me local access, in other words no internet, In my network connections it shows up as NDIS remote adapter, but it doesn't go through the internet. I am using vista

This sounds very similar to what I saw, make sure you are using appunlock.cab to unlock your phone. Other methods don't always work.

wohooooo, ok so I installed the appunlock/reboot, sec/reboot, bj.ics/reboot, certs.cab/rebbot, It works on my piece of sh#$% xp pro laptop, but it doesn't work on my new vaio running vista, what the hell. anyone have the same issue and was able to resolve,
However anyways Chudy2 u r the man!!! I was about to return the BJII, cause when I had the BJI everything was running smooth.

How do you hard reset the device?

Posted by: Delta5

Another success story here. Kudos to those that put this together.

Working perfectly for me with Vista Home Premium.

Actually, it works better than it did with WM5 AKU3! I have a nearly brand new Dell Inspiron 1520 with Vista Home Premium with Dell's integrated 355 Bluetooth chip. I had to tinker with the bluetooth stack to make it work before. I had to modify some files and force-install an old Widcomm XP bluetooth stack rather than the Microsoft/Dell Vista stack to get BT PAN to work with WM5 AKU3. When I went with the cracked WM6 with no ICS, I reinstalled the OEM BT stack back as it worked better for other things (less buggy).

But with this new WM6 edition, the BT PAN Profile immediately showed up in the 'Join Area Network' option using the Microsoft/Dell Vista Bluetooth software. I was surprised. The very first time I tried it, it just worked. Bam. Totally awesome.

Now if we could just get that pesky DUN profile back and working for some older legacy devices, I'd be thrilled. I tried adding back the BT DUN hack that's been floating around. The DUN profile does appear and I can connect to it from my laptop and or devices, but it can't ever connect - it just sits at the 'dialing' or 'login' screen until it times out, while it works perfectly with another phone with a stock BT DUN profile.

Any ideas, oh great BlackJack hackers?

Chudy2, You are Da Mon!!! You have changed the lives of MANY here!!!

I still cannot get it to work on my BJ2 so I am still trying to undo some registry settings I changed before your CAB came in the picture. I am using Win 2003 Server on my laptop but I dont think it should matter because the connection part is similar to Win XP.

I have done the following :
1. appunlock (not the SDA or whatever unlock)
2. restart
3. sec....cab
4. restart
5. BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab
6. restart
7. cert cab
8. restart

Internet Sharing app Connects, both USB and BT Pan but I dont get any IP. So I did a manual IP config 192.168.0.100/255.255.255.0/192.168.0.1/DNS 192.168.0.1 for both USB and BT Pan and still no go.

I can connect using USB DUN but thats an OUTDATED way and it should be banned

Any Ideas, Suggestions???? Please help..

I'm able to get ICS to run, but the next day I get stuck at identifying and am forced to reinstall the cabs in the installation procedure order. What could be causing this?

Posted by: IlKevinlI

Those IP addresses won't work. Those are internal IP addresses that are assigned by a router. You would need an external IP address for that method to work.

Is that external IP automatically assigned by the phone? What settings do I need for the Adapter? DHCP?

My IP config gives me this
Ethernet adapter Bluetooth PAN:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Bluetooth LAN Access Server Driver
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : <blanked out>
DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration IP Address. . . : 169.254.147.179
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :

I know I am not getting a real IP.

Thanks in advance!

Posted by: Fuzzydamnit

Got mine working . . . the only problem i had was with the network connection as specified in the ICS on my BJ1.

For the record I am using a Dell Lattitude D820 with the 350 bluetooth module running Vista Ultimate + SP1 RC1

And a Backjack 1 with the GI3 WM6 ROM on it.

Thanks much to every one in this forum for all their efforts!

Geez . . . I forgot to mention in ICS I had to pick the medianet connection instead of the AT&T IMS connection. Before I did that I would connect briefly and then get a message on my phone saying remote host disconnected.

Posted by: txcaesar

Ok ICS is now working on my vista box now as I am reply to this via my BJ...I am going to put this on the repository site.

Posted by: IlKevinlI

That 169 IP is an IP assigned by Windows when the device is not supplying one. That is your porblem. You are not getting an IP address from ATT. ICS is not working for you.

actually...if you can get get ics to connect (ie the left soft key turns to disconnect) then ICS *IS* working but the problem is elsewhere (ie your computer itself)...

the 169* ip is because the computer for some reason doesnt get an IP from the phone itself....the phone acts as a nat'ing router in a way and the cell radio is the one that gets an external ip

if all works your phone should get a 192.168.0.1** IP

if it doesn't work try hardcoding this on your computer:
IP: 192.168.0.102
DNS: 192.168.0.1
gateway: 192.168.0.1

That is also the behavior you get when using the sda unlock instead of the appunlock.cab.

that's a good poing davidbred...

the *ONLY* verified and tested method for ICS to work is the one listed earlier...there is about a dozen or more different ways of app unlocking phones and various different cabs floating around from as far back as Smartphoe 2002 versions...you're on your own if you wanna try those :P

Connected over bluetooth PAN to a BJ2, I get around 600Kbps.

Thank you all for replying.

Yes, I did use the appunlock.cab and repeated the process. I had used the SDA unlock 2 weeks ago, to install something else.

I will try doing a Hard Reset and see what happens. I am sure it will work then.

I hate to admit to leeching, but I did after browsing this forum.

I want to tell you that this is the greatest thing I have ever seen. THANK YOU SO MUCH for making this a reality on this phone. This now makes the extra cash I'm spending on the data package 100% worth it.

I followed your modified procedure, starting with appunlock.cab.

WORKS PERFECTLY USING BLACKJACK II W/WM6!!!!! I'm using it to make this post!

Using Windows XP and 2003 server with DHCP enabled.

Because I am so happy, I decided to not be lazy and actually register. This forum is going on my favorites.

P.S. I just got the phone 4 hours before this post.

Posted by: jburger

IT IS WORKING!!!!! Wooohooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am posting this using ICS (USB) !!!

My problem was that I had screwed up the registry trying to find a solution for this. I had created some entries in the HKLM\comm folder and I had to go and delete them one by one. Fortunately I had kept a track of all the changes so it was easy. After that I just followed the steps (version 2) posted by Chudy2 (The Great ) and Behold!!!! It started working!!!

I am so glad I didnt have to Hard Reset the phone . Alls Well that Ends Well!!

FYI: Both USB and Bluetooth PAN are working!!! Woohoooo

How much do I owe you Chudy2 ?????????????????????????????????????

Ok. I have installed appunlock, and secpolicies without any issues. However after downloading the ICS cab from the link in this post the file downloads as an Icalander file. When trying to open this file on my BJ 2 I receive the error Failed to save. Received data may be incomplete. I have tried downloading the file multiple times and each time the file extension isnt showing as a cab. Please help what do I need to do to fix this issue?

Please rename the .ics file to .cab

I just tested with USB on my XP machine and got ~1,200kbps/310kbps (ran the test on two different servers). So there is a little more of a bottleneck than I had thought using BT (only was getting ~600kbps there).

No matter, works great all around.

Posted by: dmilam

Just wanted to add a "me too" and Thank you for such great work.

The instructions worked perfectly and I am able to connect my Windows 2003 server machine using ICS through my phone. I am just "testing" this at work.

Thank you,
David

Posted by: JDyn84

I'm unable to get it to work. I've followed all the instructions, and I've used the latest .cab. On Vista, I cannot get an IP address from the device. On XP, I get an IP address, but I cannot surf the web anywhere.

Any ideas on what I should try?

I just got my BJ2 to upgrade from my original BlackJack. It might be a dealbreaker if I cant get ICS to work on this damn thing. I followed the directions here to the T, even tried a hard reset.

What the quote above says is exactly what my phone does. It connects (as displayed in the ICS app) but I have no internet access. How do I manually configure the IP settings like you described?

Does the new Q have ICS? hehe

search through the this thread...there is multiple descriptions of how to try it to get it to work *IF* your computer (cause it's not the phone if you're getting that far) is acting up...it's too much to just recap in one msg...

oh and yes the new Q DOES have ICS.

Posted by: Keaka26

sorry to be a PITA, but I re-read the entire thread and I'm not getting anything that will make this thing work. I appreciate your effort with this whole thing...Im just stuck! Want to keep the BJ2, but not without ICS, lol...

Posted by: JDyn84

I too have tried all the methods listed in this thread. I have tried the manual IP address, I have hard reset my device and followed the instructions to a T. If something is wrong on both of my computers, I cannot figure out what as I am unable to connect to the web on both my vista and xp machines.

Posted by: Keaka26

Yeah, I tried it on my XP laptop and my Vista desktop. No dice the XP laptop is actually more important since thats when I actually need ICS (when Im mobile)

Posted by: chudy2

ok...for those with problems did you ever have bj1 with ics working? or any other phone with ics working? what about access now to a phone that has ics so you can verify it is indeed the patch thats the problem?

what about making sure that activesync 4.5 or higher is installed on xp?

with so many varying factors on pc's these days its nearly impossible to be helpful in debugging a computer without being there...

I used to have a BJ1, had no problems with ICS...

what does the phone display on the screen when you have ics enabled?
what does your computer report for IP and netmask when you have the phone plugged in and ics enabled?

Posted by: JDyn84

Keaka26: Try the instructions in this link: http://forums.cingular.com/cng/boar...thread.id=40646

I am able to connect via ICS on my Vista laptop now. I now need to try it on my XP laptop.

Posted by: Keaka26

So, since my last try where ICS did not work at all, I have made zero changes. As requested, I went to go write down all the info that Chudy wanted...I plug the phone in and BAM! ICS works! I have no idea but it suddenly works on my vista box AND my XP box. I havent even restarted the XP laptop since that last try, lol!

Well, I dont know what happened, but I am happy!

Posted by: chudy2

now that i think about it, i do remember having issues with ics on bj1/wm5 where my computer would not get an IP address every once in a while...

*always* rebooting phone and/or computer fixed the issue....

activesync can be temperamental sometimes...

Posted by: sfcrusader

Hi Chudy2

I know you must have received a 10000 thanks already but I am going to say it one more time for cracking this. Thank you and outstanding job. Glad to see so many people have it working already.

I currently dont quite have it working yet.

I went through all 8 pages of postings and carefully applied all the cab files in the prescribed order with all the reboots and using IE on the device. I am using a BJ II with Windows XP on my laptop and my carrier is ATT

I am able to connect with Internet File Sharing and using ATT Media Net as the Network connection. It does show connected on the handheld

Over on the laptop I can see that it created local area connection 8 under network connections. I have the following IP address and paramenetes assigned per ipconfig

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 8:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

When i doube click on the network icon, I can see that about 70 packets have been sent but none has been received back yet. So packets are being sent out but none are being received

I have Sygate installed on the laptop and have disabled Sygate as well as disabled the Sygate Service in the Admin tools. Activesync connects with the device. USB is set to connect to active sync. I did install the DUN drivers from my laptop but dont think those DUN drivers are affecting this. Are they?

In any case would appreciate any other suggestions. Have rebooted the PC and rebooted the device

Posted by: chudy2

your ip address looks suspiciously wrong...192.168.0.2 should not have been leased by the phone's dhcp...are you sure that interface is not set to static IP?

also when people are testing connections, please make sure that is the only active connection...ie disable your wifi/wired lan!!!!!!

192.168.0.* is a very popular addr range, and if you have two interfaces with same range you WILL get in trouble

Posted by: sfcrusader

Thanks for the quick reply - hmmmm

So I checked the properties on the connection and no static addresses - everything is set to DHCP

My wireless was also disabled. Strange that its getting an address then - if DHCP on the carrier is not providing this then I wonder how its getting the address.

When I click connect on the handheld, status shows "check USB cable connection" for about 5 seconds and then shows "connected".

I did experience an unknown device in device manager - I removed the unknown device and have not seen it since. Looking at device manager under network adapters, I can see an entry for Windows Mobile based Internet sharing device (driver version 5.1.2600.2781 and dated Oct 2005). I wonder if this driver needs to be updated

that sounds strangely like what happened with mine initially, crusader. I think it is the drivers, as I reinstalled mine and bam! I was on.

Just a quick question from "relatively" new BlackJack II user:

When you "say" *reset* in the instructions to activate ICS,
do you mean to turn the phone Off then ON, or does *reset* require
removing the battery from BlackJack (soft reset)?

Thanks for clarifying this point.

Hey Chudy, hows it going with your vista box?

by the way, I sent you a PM

This works great on my Vista box and BJ1.

I connected easily and pulled my Ethernet for testing. I even verified my IP was different. I surfed around for a minute browsing various sites not in my cache. Works great and come in perfect timing. I'm going on a road trip tomorrow for a few days and hotels have spotty internet. Its good to know I have a backup.

I hope someone can help

you best call at&t about it....older pda unlimited used to support tethering as a feature but the new ones no longer do...depends on your contract whether you're grandfathered in or not...

I had a similar problem and it was fixed by using IE.. the server is tempermental methinks.

I was having difficulty installing "BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab", which I used Opera Mobile to download. I also try to download use IE from my XP PC. Both of file failed to install for some reason. I end up use PIE download, from my WM6 BJ, by tying in exact url, run it right after download, & it work after that. I also copy the file into SD, & run it couple times from SD w/o any issue, when I went through couple HW reset later.

Posted by: jpblue

I have a few questions.

1. The Samsung Rebranding download tells you to do all these other things before flashing the bj. Things like "installing a modem driver" and "disabling USB connections in ActiveSync". For your update, is that necessary too?

2. The Hard Reset...is that the same thing as flashing your phone? Does that wipe out your memory? How do you do it?

3. Reboot...that's just turning your phone on and off, right?

4. What does "Putting your phone is USB downloader mode" do? Does it wipe out your memory?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

running Blackjack II with Vista -

I ran both secpolicies.cab and bj.wm6.ics.enable
when I run secpolicies.cab I get a prompt that it completes installation successfully.
I turned off/on my phone and tried to run bj.wm6.ics.enable and it fails with the following message:

failed to save. Received data may be incomplete.

any ideas?

Double check to see how Windows saved the file. I had to choose save as and at the end of the file add ".cab" otherwise it saw the file as a iCalendar file vs a cab file.

Once I did this everything worked great.

Sorry I'm late to the party but I just got my BJ2 a few days ago and I tried following your instructions from December 10th. I downloaded the certs and enable files and started by doing a RESET. When the menu came up I pressed one and then responded "n" so it would not delete my data.

I then ran the certs cab and did another RESET as above. But when I tried running the enable cab I get the message, "Info...Failed to save. Received data may be incomplete." I then downloaded the data again and got the same message.

Am I doing the RESET incorrectly? Or is there something I need to do to correct the downloaded file?

Sorry for asking these questions but I just started researching the Internet connection solution today.

And thanks for the great work! It must be me doing something incorrectly because so many others got the patch to work.

Just an update to my previous post. After reviewing the thread further I downloaded appunlock.cab and ran it after removing and reinstalling the battery. I then proceeded to run secpolicies.cab, removed the battery, ran enable.cab and certs.cab and removed the battery and then started Internet Sharing.

The BJ2 indicated the connection was made (a big improvement from the first attenpt) but then the message, "...the other party terminated the connection.." appeared on the BJ2.

Thinking my data plan was the problem, I moved the SIM to my old BJ1 that had already been hacked for tethering and initiated Internet Connection. The connection was made and I was able to display web pages on my laptop.

So somewhere along the line the process I'm using did not work. Can anyone see a flaw in the process, or perhaps the message I'm getting is another problem.

Thanks for any help!

In the ICS application, did you change the connection to MEdia Net? The other AT&T option doesn't work, and will display the exact message you just wrote about above.

GOod to know that it should work!! I have XP on my old notebook, but I just got vista on my new laptop...still wonder if it ll work...

Posted by: oldegypt

Thanks very much!!! That was my problem.

I didn't check for options when the Internet Sharing application started because it worked (without changing any options) on the BJ1. As soon as MEdia Net was selected it worked perfectly!

Well I install everything and got it to connect but when I try to go back to activesync it won't let sync up unless I restart my computer.

What OS is running on your PC? Vista? XP? SP1? SP2?

If resetting your PC fixes it... then the problem is likely to be an issue with your PC.

My guess is your running Vista, which is all buggy. I know this because I use it.

Posted by: liquidreign

I am running XP and I finaly had to go into my BJII security settings and reset my phone and that got activesync back.

Hi All

I am glad to report that I now have Internet Sharing working on my BJII with Windows XP and have joined the many of you who already have this working.

For me to finally get this to work, I had to hard reset the device, wiping out everything and going back to factory defaults, uninstall Activesync on my laptop and reinstall Activesync from the CD (which i believe also brings in the drivers as well).

The road that was taken to finally get this work was a little unusual - like always it was a long and windy road but here is a short synopsis: after hard resetting the device and resintalling active sync, I could not get active sync to connect with the device via the USB cable and had to first solve this issue before I could continue on to ICS (btw I am still amazed at how Activesync can be such a monster piece of software for a seemingly simple function - anyway I digress).

When I ran the troubleshooter, it reported the "ActiveSync Cannot Receive Data Through Port 990" issue. I had this even though my firewall was completely disabled and all the other settings were correct. Tried many many many different things and did discover some interesting sources of data at http://www.pocketpcfaq.com/faqs/activesync/guest.htm and at http://csharponphone.blogspot.com/2...1-sit-spin.html.

Finally I got fed up and called Samsung to see if I could get some help from them. Support asked me for my IMEI number and I had to remove the battery to get the IMEI number on the device. When I put the battery back in and restarted the device and plugged it in to the laptop, it connected to Activesync - I was shocked. I stayed on the phone and spoke to the Samsung rep about why removing the battery helped - especially since I did do a hard reset on the device. Well apparently it makes a difference and so folks out there, when resetting your device and something still does not work, dont forget to take out the battery as one of your steps. There must have been some stale state information that the battery inadvertently preserved I figure. Anybody else have an explaination?

So after I got active sync to work via USB cable and it was able to synchronize both locally and over the air, I then turned on ICS. First attempt failed and then I realized that I had not selected Media Net but was using ATT IMS. Realizing this mistake, I changed the settings to Media Net and tried again and walla - it worked - like a charm. Connected to CNN.com and was able to read the news.

Thanks once again to Chudy2 for great work in developing this fix and thanks to Txcaesar for putting me on this path to go reinstall drivers. Looks like resintalling the drivers did the trick - although in my case, it was a long and drawn out trick :-)

Great job and very much appreciated. I'm running Vista with USB and it works great...still no luck with bluetooth but hey I appreciate the USB. Maybe the bluetooth will work itself out. Thanks again. BTW this message sent through my BJ2 ICS.

Chudy2, where do I begin, and what can I say that hasn't already been said? Your service to the Blackjack community goes above and beyond the call. It feels inadequate to just say thanks in words since I have paid for phone software that hasn't produced the kind of results your ics enable cab has. If you are ever in the Pasadena, CA area, send me a message to iboutakidisATfullerton.edu and lunch is on me, brother.

Your instructions worked well. Just 3 tips to those experiencing problems with the procedure (each of these has been mentioned in other threads, but I figured I'd bring them together here.
1) Make sure that when you save the BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable file, you choose save as, all file type, and attach the .cab ending because otherwise you often end up with a pesky calendar file
2) Make sure that the Network connection is set on "medianet" when you start the ICS app.
3) Do soft resets (i.e. power off the phone, then power on) in between the steps as outlined by Master Chudy2 and NOT hard resets.

Thanks so much for this guide!

I downloaded appunlock.cab, and installed it (although it gave me a warning that it was for an earlier version of Windows Mobile), then I rebooted, then I downloaded and installed secpolicies.cab, rebooted, and replaced the battery. Then, I downloaded and installed BJ.WM6.ICS.Enable.cab (it gave me the same error about a different version), rebooted, and replaced the battery. When I booted up again there was no certs.cab in /My Documents! What did I do wrong?

EDIT: If I go to "remove applications" I notice that it doesn't list secpolicies.cab as installed...is this part of the problem.

When I try to redownload appunlock.cab it says it is replacing an existing file in/My Documents/, but if I navigate there I don't see any file named appunlock.cab.

EDIT: If I search for cab in /My Documents I see all the downloaded files, but I can't open them...

EDIT: I discovered the problem -- I had to use File Explorer. Now I can connect to my laptop, but when I hit connect it says:

Status: Check USB cable connection

and doesn't do anything else. Under Connections if I change it from ActiveSync to Modem or USB Storage it gives me the same error.

Same goes for Dallas, TX!

I'm posting this from my newly installed ICS thanks to you...and...this is my 1st Post!

Just based on everyone else's feedback, I can tell you're a great guy

chudy has been a wonderful member of the BJ forum and because of him, Da_G was able to get the ROMs fixed up a bit on our site...

Its ppl like him that make it all worthwhile. Be sure to go to our site and see all the ROMS we have from the kitchen, I think they will be to your liking with a good port wine!

Trying to get ICS working on a BJ2 before the radio totally dies on my 8525. ICS works well between my laptop (Ubuntu 7.10 / winXP) and the 8525 on the rare occasions when the GSM stack does load/stable ...

Did download and install your ICS.cab to the BJ2, seems to be working on that end. However, I am getting a weird situation when USB connecting to the laptop under Ubuntu. The MAC Address reported by the BJ2/ICS is all 0's! This sets off an error in the rndis module (duplicate addresses detected), and renders the connection useless.

Outputs of ifconfig, for illustration:

8525/ICS/USB (Working):

eth2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 80:00:60:0F:E8:00
inet addr:192.168.0.102 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::8200:60ff:fe0f:e800/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:8050 Metric:1
RX packets:3349 errors:5680 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:2839
TX packets:3270 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:2920700 (2.7 MB) TX bytes:547094 (534.2 KB)

BJ2/ICS/USB (Not Working):

rndis0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:00:00:00:00:00
inet addr:192.168.0.2 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::200:ff:fe00:0/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:8050 Metric:1
RX packets:12 errors:12 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:27 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:1724 (1.6 KB) TX bytes:4989 (4.8 KB)

And, as you pointed out in another post, dhcp is picking up 192.168.0.2 for the BJ2 instead of something like 192.168.0.102 (which the 8525 does).

Any ideas what could be causing this?

scott314, could you post the output of ifconfig / dmesg for a successful connect?

Posted by: fhteagle

Forgot to mention that BJ2/ICS does run as its supposed to under windowsXP SP2 with Activesync 4.5... 192.168.0.102 ip and everything...

I will keep playing with Ubuntu of course, but if you have any ideas Chudy, please let me know.

Thanks

Hi all,

I would like to say that this forum is amazing, and I have learned a great deal from reading these posts.

I just picked up a Blackjack 2 and have the data plan. I can tether with no issue using the supplied USB cable, but would love to do it with bluetooth.

I plan on following the instruction s listed in the thread, but had a few questions:

What does a hard reset do?
What programs will remain on the phone, and which ones will be gone? I assume contacts, and user installed programs will be gone, but what about ATT stuff? Office? Contacts, etc?

Will hard resetting void any warranties should my phone need service?

Is there any way to go back once I have performed the above mods for BT tethering?

Thanks for the info, I look forward to a cable free life!

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to let you know that I bit the bullet and folllowed the "Take Two" instructions and everything went without a hitch!...

This is amazing!!!

Thanks a lot

Posted by: chudy2

haha, good to see this thread is still going strong

let's see if bj1 wm6 official update includes ics or not...not that it matters with this available

Posted by: asheesh88

One question though.....

How do I connect via USB? I suppose I would want the flexibility of connecting to either in case my battery is low or something...In ICS on the phone, I switch to USB PC connection, and am on Medianet. When I say connect, it says, "Connected". On the laptop in Lan Connection 3, it says "Connected, Firewalled", but I cannot get on the internet.

Could it have something to do with having ActiveSync on the laptop?

This is the behavior I notice...when I connect the phone to the USB cable, Lan Connection 2 pops up in the Network Connections page and becomes "Connected, Firewalled" The ip info is something like 169.x.x.x.

Then, when I go to ICS on the phone and hit connect, Lan 2 Connection disappears and Lan Connection 3 shows up, connected and firewalled with the below settings....

Upon doing an ipconfig /all on the laptop I get the following info for Lan Connection 3:

IP address: 192.168.0.2
DHCP enabled: Yes
Autoconfig enabled: Yes
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DHCP server: 192.168.0.1
DNS server: 192.168.0.1

Any ideas?

Also, for the bluetooth connection I got the following speeds: 440 down / 290 up

What I also noticed is the when you get a call on the phone, the internet connection suspends until the call is over....

I've been working this "DHCP error" thing a bit, with a couple of different ROMs... and there does not seem to be much of a pattern to whether the laptop ends up with 192.168.0.2 or .102 address, whether the MAC addr will be valid or all 0's...

What I can recommend for usb connections, though, if you are having trouble...

1. power off and on the device
2. open no other apps
3. open ics, select "usb" and "media net" (for att of course)
4. press left soft key for "connect", and depending on ROM wait for change of network indicator to tell you the data connection is active
5. _then_ connect the usb cable.

That procedure seems to about double the chances of getting good DHCP / MAC values on the old leaked roms and the da_g betas.

Anyone find out if the official wm6 has a working ICS yet?

Posted by: thefourthdoctor

Yep, official WM6 rom has ICS!

Posted by: jsobrato

For those of you with Macs, here is some additional info. I am running 10.5.1

Once you get ICS working on the phone (the Take Two instructions earlier in the thread worked for me) pair your phone with with Mac by selecting Set Up Bluetooth Device from the menu under the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar (or select Bluetooth from System Preferences and click the plus sign to add a new device).

VIP: If you have previously paired the phone to your Mac before adding the Take Two cabs, you must delete the pairing and then pair the phone again so the Mac knows it is Bluetooth PAN capable.

Once paired you can then select the phone under the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar and then select Connect to Network in the drop down menu adjacent to the phone name. Then you should be connected to the internet via Bluetooth and your WM 6.0 phone!!!

Hi all,

I just want to update.

ICS via USB works great thanks to fhteagle's advice....the key was hitting "connect" and THEN connecting the USB cable I think.

Also, ICS vs. Bluetooth works flawlessly. I purchased a Zoom Bluetooth 2.0 PCMCIA card from newegg.....$45 and it looks OEM! It works on WIndows drivers and was up and running in 2 minutes.

Speeds:
USB 750/300
Bluethooth: 440/290

Thanks a ton guys!

Here is a simple script if you want to use bluetooth ICS on linux. Just start up the phone, turn on bluetooth, hit the softbutton for ICS connect, and run this script as root:

Code:
#!/bin/sh # Test for bluetooth device: if dmesg | grep -q Bluetooth then : else echo "Error: No bluetooth device found." exit 1 fi PHONE="SGH-i617" PHONE_MAC=`hcitool scan | grep $PHONE | cut -c 2- | cut -c -17` echo "Initiating connection to $PHONE. Make sure the phone already has ICS turned on and scanning." pand --connect $PHONE_MAC echo "Loading module bnep..." modprobe bnep sleep 1 dhclient bnep0 exit 0

I still cannot get USB to work on either XP or Media Center or Linux. I hit connect and it says "Check USB connection..."

I hope this script is helpful to people!

Anyone, especially Chudy, have any sugestions how to get ICS to work over bluetooth. Here is the problem-I have Moto Q9 Global and it already has ICS,but there is no option for Bluetooth connection, only USB.I did install Chudy's CAB file and it added some registry entries but still no Bluetooth option.I was tinkering with different registry settings, checking different forums but no answers.I am wondering if it is Bluetooth stack?Q9 has Widcomm.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does this only work when you have a 3G connection, or will it work over Edge (AT&T)?

Posted by: Maxixero

I've checked my steps, and gone over them multiple times. I've managed to get it to "connect," but I keep getting time out errors. I've tried the plug in after the connect trick, no go.

IP address - 192.168.0.2
Mac - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.0.1

I was able to follow the instructions to get ICS to work on the BJ1, but I'm unable to come up with an answer on this one.

Any help would be appreciated.

XP and mediacenter: Install/reinstall the activesync product from Microsoft is the first thing to try.

For linux: what kernel / distro are you running? Have you gotten / make'd the usb-rndis-lite kernel module yet? Works great for me (currently posting via Ubuntu 7.10 laptop ICS'd to a BJ1 w/ Beta6)

----

On a side note, da_g's beta6 ROM for BJ1 has about the best % of correctly setup DHCP/MAC addr I've seen since my 8525 was actually working...

http://dan.omefilms.com/mobile/

I am doing a little more troubleshooting / investigation using the usb_modeswitch utils for linux to see if this whold bad dhcp isnt really rooted in a partial / wrong usb mode change from "activesync" mode to "ics" mode... standby for more details if/when I can make sense of a few things.

ICS will pass along whatever flavor/quality of network the phone attaches itself to. If you only have EDGE service available, you will get EDGE speeds throughput to the laptop or whatever. If you have a ROM with bandselect / bandswitch on it, try forcing it to "WCDMA" band to see if you really can get UMTS/HSDPA/3.5G (may drain battery up to 2x faster though!), contrariwise forcing it to GSM850/GSM1900 will probably force you down to EDGE networks/speeds, but may increase your battery life!

Why dont you just go to my site and reflash with the Beta 6? you wont need to install the ics as it already works?
