Unlocking ATT activated Phone

My son attends Niagara University and was using an unlocked iphone on Rogers on firmware 1.0.2 and the phone bills are killing me. So I decided to get him a iphone plan from ATT. In order to set up the plan i had to activate through itunes but itunes didnt reconize it as a new phone so i did a restore at 1.0.2 then picked my plan then activated. Everything went fine and everthing works including visual voice mail. I have managed to jailbreak the phone and tried to unlock it using anysim 1.1 but the unlocked failed. My question is how do i unlock it so we he comes to canada he can put in his rogers sim? Since it is already activated can i do a restore, bypass activation and unlock? Will his ATT plan still be his iphone plan? Any help will be greatly apprieciated.
