Not as Easy as they make it out to be...

So I picked up an iPhone yesterday. After playing around with the phone last night, I am impressed. The phone itself is incredible. However, everything else was a huge headache. Maybe someone will find something useful in here if they are looking to get an iphone.

Here was the process for activating my phone:
- open the box. Oooohhh, nice and pretty

- Fire up my main box and download iTunes, install it, plug in the iphone USB, drop the phone in the cradle....error message. The iPhone cannot be used in a 64-bit system....what???? So I got on google and sure enough, my 64 bit XP system will not handle the iPhone. Seriously, apple, this is very disappointing.

- Fire up my old computer with 32 bit XP. Old as in USB 1.1 transfer rates....

- plug in the cable, put the phone in....nice, recognized. Start the activation. Put in my current cell number.....error. My account cannot be used with the iPhone. Um, that is not what the guy told me at the store. Try it a couple of times, look on google, finally call the support number in the error message. As it turns out, my account had been converted into a 'business account'. The company I work for has such a large wireless account that they extend a discount of 8% from the bill out to employees if you sign up. Well the guy at the store told me he would have to remove the 8% as it would not work with the iPhone. Fine. So now I am talking to the support guy, he can see where it was removed, but it is still showing as a business account. Wait for 45 minutes while he calls people to figure things out. Finally he tells me to try it again. I do and it goes through. He says he will stay on the line while I complete the act...no, my old phone just went dead again. Hate that thing, gotta get the iPhone up and running.

- go through the process, and everything was pretty smooth after that except for an error in creating my iTunes account. Oh well. So now I have my phone and it is working great. Oh, and the firmware version is 1.1.1. :-)

I do have a question though. With the SDK coming out soon, if I jailbreak now what are the chances of it bricking when I update to the new firmware that will support the SDK apps? I heard that it can still happen, just kind of rare

No you can always do a restore and start fresh before upgrading

Is your business account under a Fed Tax ID or a SSN? If it's a true business account, this could get interesting!

Well I am not sure how the classified the business account. The guy at the store where I bought the phone said that he had cancelled the business stuff out. The guy on the phone said that my account still reflected the business account info, but when he called someone on the business side they said that it had been cleared out and that they could not do anything from their end. I do have to say, that while I was annoyed at the wait, I was very impressed by their service. They guy checked in about every 2 minutes to give me updates and let me know what was going on and was extremely helpful. I do not know what he eventually did to remove it all from the phone, but whatever he did worked and I was able to active the iphone last night.

Where did you buy your phone? i've been looking for a fw 1.1.1 for almost 2 weeks now with no luck

Yes its certainly not as easy as they make it out to be if you do not meet the requirements, a business account can not have an iphone plan at this time.

I am going to start a thread, I got T-Mobile and this is soooooo not easy to get up an running...

It is funny. I live in Louisville, KY, but was across the river in clarksville, IN. I actually stopped by the largest store they have over there. I was looking around for someone to help that looked like they knew what was going on, and I got the guy that I thought could help. When I asked him if they had any 1.1.1 iphones in he looked confused and asked if I was looking for a 4GB iphone. I groaned inside and said nevermind, just to give me what he had in the 8gb. Being a large store, I was not expecting a 1.1.1 at all. But when I got home and fired it up, it immediately asked me to upgrade to 1.1.2. It is luck of the draw I guess.

well what got me is that I did not even know that by signing up through work that it would convert my phone to a business plan. I remember reading through the fine print when doing that because I wanted to make sure that it would not lock me in for 2 years by doing so, and I don't remember anything about it saying that it would change my account type.

I picked one up in buffalo 1.1.1 but I was taking my chances, it worked well. Very, very happy with the phone, working well on fido...

Since you got a 1.1.1, you should have simply unlocked it - seriously, it takes like 15 minutes, no PC required, and the full instructions are at UnlockThatiPhone.com - and you wouldn't have had to give up your discount, your plan, or go thru the activation headache.
