I am interested in getting an iphone but i have verizon. Since verizon just recently opened its network to all phone types, would it be possible to use the iphone on verizon?

No, it will not.

No because Verizon uses different technology (CDMA) then ATT (GSM).

Verizon didn't "open it's network to all phone types" - it opened it's network to phones NOT directly from Verizon.

Still has to be the correct type, however, so as noted already, no, a GSM phone won't work on Verizon, since they're still CDMA.
