It'd be great if all we had to do was call Apple up and have them send the unlocking info to our PC. Since there's no subsidy for the iPhone, there shouldn't be a requirement to complete the 2-year service contract.

The iPhone is unlocked via iTunes, and requires an internet connection. Ergo, Apple is sending information to the PC/iPhone, and that contains the unlocking/subsidy code removal instructions. Someone needs to (and probably will soon) intercept the packets, decode them, and see exactly what is being sent to the iPhone. Once that's done, it should/will be possible to duplicate it, probably by using a "fake" Apple server and having the same information sent to any iPhone. It might be IMEI-based, S/N based, or whatever, but the decoded instructions should be able to be modified to work on any iPhone. And hey, we can always hope that those two court cases out in CA result in Apple unlocking US-based iPhones the same way. Try to keep up.
I don't think anyone has answered that question yet.

Now, does that apply to old Cingular SIMs, or even older AT&T Wireless (aka Cingular Blue) SIMs? I don't think anyone has answered that question yet. |
