he says its unlocked but i thought he R means it cant?

based on the serial number (4th and 5th digit), it says week 29. it can be unlocked.

When you read the serial number don't worry about letters. Look at the 4th and 5th numbers. Those numbers indicate the week the phone was built.

In this case, week 29, which should be a 1.0.X phone

What you need to be careful of here is if it was unlocked with the older version of AnySIM that it's been 'virginized' and redone with the newer, safer methods. The older versions are 'bricks' in the making. The newer versions are safe and easy to use.

If you're buying the phone used or from a reseller on Craig's list try to arrange to test the phone before you buy it.

None of the unlocks are irreversible. But you don't want to have to get into that kind of tchnical work if you can avoid it
