Can you disable the phone on a BB?

Lately I've been getting a lot of calls on Berry, which is weird since *I* don't even know the phone number, I only use it for data and PDA tasks...is there a way I can just shut off the phone feature?

Thanks, that'll keep it from bothering me...though I'm wondering if it's possible to turn the phone off completely, as in, it won't make outgoing calls either

Sure you can, delete the phone application

You know, you got me all excited, until I went in and discovered that it won't let me. There's simply no delete option on Phone. Blah! I'll try through desktop manager, though.

Thanks.

try going in phone app, there are call barring options and such in there, you may be able to block calls through there (network dependent though)

That's weird. It makes sense though. I know when I worked at Rogers, people accidentally deleted it (although that is very stupid to delete it) and we had to reload the OS to get it installed. I thought it would work now, but I guess they disabled the option to delete it.

Here's how you would remove the phone application. This is not official advice and I claim no responsibility for any potential harm or damage caused as a result.

This procedure definitely *did* brick my 8700 running 4.2.1 software, so be warned. I had to reload the Phone application afterwards to get it back up and running. This is likely why the option has been disabled.

1. On the computer you have Desktop Manager installed on, open: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research in Motion\Shared\Loader Files
2. Locate the most recent software directory for your device and open it.
3. Find the Phone.alx file and open it with Notepad, WordPad or your other favourite text/XML editor.
4. Scroll down until you find the line that says:
<required>true</required>
5. Change the word "true" to "false" (without the quotes.)
6. Save the file and open Desktop Manager / Application Loader.
7. "Phone" should now be deselectable. Do so and click Next. It will be removed from your device.

Again, this *did* brick my device, but that's the procedure for being able to remove specific greyed-out CODs. To re-add the application, do a battery pull and launch Desktop Manager again, and check the Phone option.

Here's a simple one I haven't seen yet...
-Simply stop paying for the phone service on your line - just pay for the data plan. Of course I do not mean stop sending the payment! Rather, call your phone company up and tell them you just need the data plan. If it is a company-owned device - tell whoever pays the bills, I guess...

That's the route I would go

I'm already on data only...that just puts you on pay-per-use, which is one dollar per minute...hence why I want to disable it altogether so I can't even accidentally dial something (and it's possible, every time I put it in my pocket without locking the keypad, it's almost always on the dial screen when I pull it back out...)

O I C... Well, I guess my solution wouldn't work then. *sigh* Well, my last idea to work around the tinkering about with deleting files and such is to call up the phone company and ask the following:
  1. Can I restrict all calls to and from my phone?
  2. Request a phone # change (if #1 is not possible)

Just let them know what your problem is and what you would like to happen - let them figure out the rest. It's worth a try...
