In theory if i went to the states to get my iphone... how would i know if i was able to unlock the phone? would they sell to me? is the serial number located anywhere on the box... is there a certain place i should go? (ill be in florida)

from what ive heard, you can only discover your firmware once you've opened it, i dont think it says on the box. yes they are allowed and most likely will sell it to you and the certain place you should go is the apple store, because they are unlocked there.

the iphone is not unlocked at apple stores, unlocking it voids the warranty. In order to unlock it, u have to do it urself, or get a friend that knows how to do it. Yes they will sell it, but dont tell them u plan to unlock it, and if they ask for a zip code or city name give them one in florida, not ur canadian one, or else they will definetly know u are going to unlock it

my bad thought they came unlocked since they are not a licensed dealer of AT&T?

The serial number is located at the back of the box near the left side in fine print (you'll want to pay attention to the 4th and 5th digit of the serial). You want to look for any iPhone that was made Week 44 and before because those are 1.1.1 versions -- but not all the time. Some forum members claim that they thought they were getting 1.1.1 because of the serial number but once they got into the phone itself, they actually had a 1.1.2 and therefore had the new baseband on there and they werent able to unlock it. So it's really based on luck..

If i have a cingular sim card how can i use it to my advantage when i go to buy the iphone in the states? would it help? I have a Florida Address... also, are the boxes all out on the show floor so i can just pick up the boxes till i find like a week 43? or do i have to ask them? Will they not sell to me if they see me looking? What approach should i take?

yeah im wondering that. but considering the price of the product, ill asume they have it in the back. anyone know the answer>? wont it be suspcious when you ask for another serial number?
