Would you accept and RSC position that works primarily outside of the store?

Business In Retail is really where we have been coached to go. That's not really a problem but, I spend a lot of time out of the store doing table days and flyers for businesses to get what i feel is icing on the cake although it is expected. It has been suggested that I hire reps who work mostly out of the store. These are not SBA's but regular 40 GA, 80-90 opp reps that are hired to work businesses and table days, etc. Question is, would you ever accept this role at work? If i interviewed you and told you the goal of the position is to work outside the store, how would you take this? I have been grilled on hiring rsc's for this role consistantly for the past month.

Some reps look at that position as a way to move up, some enjoy working with businesses customers and some like myself would not want to do that job.

From my experience most reps would not want to do that job and those that would are probably your higher performing reps that have a higher self motivating personality.

when i was at cor that is how i made my goal and it helped me get promoted to bmg. i agree with ivwshane that you have to find some really self motivated, self managing, acheiver type personality reps for that.

if you put your average rep out there you will simply be sending them out to play.

personally I would never work in a store enviroment again. I have been doing B2B outside sales for the last 10 years or so. I could never go back to being in the same store same enviroment everyday. It would drive me crazy.
Money is a powerful motivator, would it pay more base, commission ? flkexible hours? no more nights or weekends? or fewer at least? Like anything you need the find the hot button and hammer that home, you need to sell people you want on the position.
The biz contacts I have made have been invaluable for refiing contractors plumbing mechanic etc.... they are more likely to take care of you when you have that relationship, it far different when they are walking into your location

my manager once tried to take me out of the store for an entire day on a Friday at the end of the month when i was 3 opps away from hitting tier 2...i threatened to quit, he didn't believe me...i handed him my name tag and was on my way out the door when he caved. so to answer your question, no...i would never take a job doing this. now if my manager had gone about this in a different way, like choosing a monday which is usually really slow in our store i would have been open to the idea. but there's no way i would do this on a regular basis and still be expected to hit the same goals as a rep that doesn't do this and works 40hrs/week in the store

I've done quite a few sign-up days, 5 opps bare minimum for the 3 hours you're sitting at the table or kiosk. You could get 10-15 if you're the only carrier showing up. Plus, you know ahead of time what email setup the company has, so you can pick the appropriate PDA's to take with you.

but that's different than what is being talked about here, we're talking table days....meaning that you go to a business that has an IRU account and just give all the employees information

And if that's the case, you'd have to make sure that your team at the store gave you credit for all adds/upgrades for that IRU table day you did, if that was the basis for your employment (outside sales position, with the 40 add/80 opp concept).

I tried a table day one time but majority of them were already existing clients. They were more interested in getting their IRU discounts.
