Bypassing Rogers MP3 ringtone restction on Razr2 V9

Hi everyone

I would love to know if someone has figured out how we can possibly use our own MP3 ringtunes with the Razr 2 V9. Rogers has put restrictions on the phone so that it does not allow us to do this. I really dont want to debrand the phone. I use to have the Sony W580i and was able to use the DRM packager and convert the MP3s but that won't work with this one. I have tried using it as an MP4 (converted on NERO wave editor) and WMA, neither one is working. Please help. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Have you looked into debranding the phone? That would be a way around the limit that Rogers imposes.

I found a solution by searching through the forums. I was able to use my Nero Software to shorten the MP3 to less than 300 kb and then use Itunes to turn it into a MP4.a and then transferred it to the phone. It worked great until my NERO program said I had reached a limit of using the MP3 Pro function. Don't know what that means. Anyone know of any good free audio editting programs available online????

Can this workaround be used on a Motorola KRZR K1s?

I have found if I upload an mp3 to the phone using Motorola Phone Tools, then change the attribute of the .mp3 to 0044 with P2K Commander I can then apply them as a ringtone. If I upload an .m4a file, it works without changing the attribute.

However I can only set my ringtone, wtf! Why is there no option to change Text Message ringtone or Voice Mail ringtone. The lack of customizing features on the V9 is really pissing me off.

That is so strange, cause I am able to change my text message and voice mail ringtones by using the .m4a file and as I mentioned I am with Rogers too.

It is possible that Rogers blocks that with their firmware on the phone. Providers often do that, and I am not sure. Meaning that they will disable one or more functions on the phone.

Update: Hrmm I started playing around with Seems in P2KC and now suddenly I can apply ringtones to new txt messages, voicemails etc. *shrug* I wont question it, as long as it works haha. Although I'm sure I was just missing something earlier rather than the feature actually missing from my phone.

I've also noticed when people call, my phone will ring for exactly 21 seconds on Rogers. So for those making custom ringtones, that's the magic number if you're using a phrase from a song. Interestingly Telus was 15 seconds on my old phone. I wonder if these ring times are unique to the network, or the phone?

Rogers rings for about 20 seconds if you have voicemail on your line, fido can ring for up to 30 seconds if you have voicemail. this delay is set by the network, not your phone

There are also universal GSM codes that you can enter to make it ring shorter or longer, up to 30 seconds. Do a search, they are here on the board.

Aphasia : What version of p2k you're using?
Could you elaborate more how exactly do you do this?

*** I have a W510 Motor using P2k 4.9.0 and iirc, i couldn't see the mp3 i uploaded to my phone.
I use MPT for all the transfers.

Thx

Nero claims that their MP3Pro compression technique provides CD quality audio at a 64Kbps sample rate; it's included in Nero 7 and later, but was an extra cost feature in earlier versions.

You should be able to disable the MP3Pro feature (a check box somewhere) when you're doing the encoding and simply use the stock compression routines.

Rogers ring delay to voicemail is permanently set at 20 seconds by the Network Switch. Codes can NOT override this to make it longer or shorter, It's been that way ever since I can remember either. Thats why I stated the 20 seconds in my previous post. Yes this is probaly defeats the GSM spec, but I cant give you an answer as to why its like this. I am just the messenger.

I'm using P2KC 4.9.E Build Date: 2007-10-14.

At this point I'm not even using MPT anymore, except to backup my contacts or sync my calendar.

I've made ringtones with .mp3 and .mp4/.m4a. Depending on which format, the process is slightly different.

The phone's stock audio ringtones are .m4a, however you don't need to rename the extension to .m4a if you've made a .mp4 file. It plays them just fine.

Again, my GSM Motorola RAZR2 V9 rings for precisely 21 seconds if I don't answer it. So unless I'm creating a loopable ringtone, I crop all of my ringtones to 21 seconds when I'm editing them.

I've been using Sony SoundForge 9.0 to crop to 21 seconds, then saving the file as a .mp4. (I also recommend doing a fade in/out on the file, just a small 0.250 of a second fade in/out. This ensures your ringtone doesn't start or end with a unpleasing "click" sound)

Once I have my .mp4 file on hand, I open up my trusty P2KC and navigate to /e/mobile/audio folder on my V9 and copy the .mp4 file over.

I can now set my ringtone to the new .mp4 I've uploaded.

Alternatively, with an .mp3 file, I perform the same proceedure. However once the file is on my phone, I right click on the file using P2KC and change attribute to "0044" from the default "0004" when the .mp3 gets uploaded.

I can now set my ringtone to the new .mp3 I've uploaded.

Hope this helps!

That is interesting. I didn't know that they could override something like that. Not to doubt you, but have you confirmed this yourself?

umm...

I use Super to convert my files. I convert a full mp3 song to mp4. I upload it to my phone using motorola phone tools file transfer. it works as a ringtone. the end. no shortening tracks, no reducing size or quality.

Not just myself but many others including none other than the Cell Tower Specialist Mr. Steve Punter himself confirmed it on his website www.arcx.com/sites

I have used a variety of programs to convert the mp3s that I would like to use as my ringtones, and have now converted them into mp4. I hook up my phone through the USB cable and upload the songs, go back into the phone and try to change the ringtones and I get nothing, just the crap stock ones
HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
