krzr k1 ringtone customize ???

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Halle

I just purchased the "cd" software to add a ringtone that I have found and have stored in a folder on my notebook.
So now I have the cd and the cable and a ringtone that I would like to d/l but don't have a clue how to do this ???

I would assume that it would have to be d/l to the Ringtone selection area so that it is an additional choice that I can make ???

I really hope that a user that can in brief point form advise this Noob to all of this, as to how to go about this task.

And just wondering as well what sites are the best to d/l from ???

I appreciate everyone's time in guiding this fumbling user through this task !!
Again, I look forward to suggestions as I can't stand the ringtones on this new krzr k1, btw my provider is Rogers Canada and I must say that I love this phone !!!
Battery life is superb and the reception in areas which were impossible before are outstanding in the 2 that we have in our family. This upgrade from the V551 has been a great move !!!

Have you managed to get an answer to this question? I have just gotten a K1 today (Fido/Rogers) and though I am able to copy mp3s over to it, I can't set them as ringtones. None of the suggestions i have found thus far for getting around that seem to work.

I need tool kit for krzr k1

Posted by: Halle

No I am wondering as well b/c I have had not reply. I have the tool kit and software, however don't know what site to go to and the process.
I asked my neighbour and he said he just got a ring tone by a d/l to his phone and he opened his phone and it was a selection under Detail and he clicked on it to select it and that was his ringtone.

I really would appreciate a reply as I have been told true/false ???? that there are some not so good d/l ringtone sites out there.
Comments anyone ???

I would really appreciate some help as by the prior posts it appears that there others in this quandry as well.
Thankyou

I also have this phone - am watching to see if u get a fix. I am also wondering how to up-date my phone from Moto site - Rogers is not an option.

Got this phone for Xmas, my son got it from Amazon.com works great with Rogers Sim, but only Tellus is listed in updates for this model.

Wonder if there is a way to do a moto update with out a service, as in the unlocked state I received it??

Appreciate any one who takes time to respond.

Tks

Still waiting to find out about polyphonic ringtones, I do have the tool kit.
I have been warned that there are some bad sites out there that can cause problems with fones if one does a d/l from them, so I am looking for a decent site with a song tone that is of my "vintage" as we are not of the present generation in age !! (it seems the new age polyphonics and ring tones are what is out there). This is OK if that is your age bracket...but for us it is not what we are looking for !!!

need to unlock first then u can play ringtone

Posted by: Airman32

Actually my phone came unlocked - just plugged in the Rogers Sim and walla! I also have a host of ring tones and not sure I'd need to download new ones.

I love the ability to make my own wall paper by taking a photo - camera very nice and am surprised to see the pics - very clear.

Am hoping to up-date with Rogers software from Motorola, unless there is a way to update with out selecting a phone provider.

Unlocking is not a problem; there should be someone in your area that does it - takes about 5 minutes.

Hmmmm.....just wondering how I know if my phone is locked ???
And again wondered what is a good site to d/l from as it was the software tech at my office that warned me about some sites that lurk out there that are not good and also a security forum that I have belonged to for several years.
So I guess my question is 2 fold.
Thankyou.

If you try to use a different providers SIM card and it does not work, then likely your phone is locked. Or, when you bought it, did it come with a plan? Likely it is locked.

Cheers,

Posted by: Halle

es we do have a Rogers plan, if it is locked....we can't d/l polyphonic ringtons And if we get it unlocked, how is that done and will it void the moto warranty which we have for 2 more years ???

Not sure what locked means, thankyou

Posted by: Airman32

Locked simply means that you can not use the phone with Tellis or Bell or any other GSM provider - that is, if you used and existing SIM card from another provider, it would not work! Or, if you went on vacation and bought a sim card in the Carib, or USA, it would not work - it only works with Rogers!

In your case, does not matter as you are with Rogers - however, if you go to www.motorola.com and try to download lastest updates for phone, it will ask you to choose a service provider - Tellis is there, but not Rogers.

My phone has lots of different ring tones - I bought it UNLOCKED which means there is no service providers i.e. Rogers, software already instelled. I frankly don't understand the need for d/i ring tones, and I am sure there is a way to get them, I just never tried.

You phone should have the rogers stuff on it - mine just shows Rogers on the upper left screen from my Sim Card.

Good luck - great phone.

OK, now I understand that I am confined to Rogers which I had assumed anyways b/c of the 3 year contract. We have been renewing with them for the past in excess of 15 years now.
The store that I deal with said that all I had to do to get a ringtone...polyphonic that I liked was to purchase the Toolkit, which I did and that I also know that I can use it to d/l pics etc as well; however have been warned by so many people to be careful of the sites that I decide to d/l a polyphonic Ringtone from as experience with these other Rogers users here is that there fones have become candidates for malfunctioning after attempting a d/l.

Why would my fone be locked with Rogers and Not be on the Moto site for upgrades while the same model of fone here in Vancouver BC apparently is listed as upgradeable with Telus provider ?
Is there a reason that this is done?
We have always been with Rogers b/c my better half travels overseas and his office recommended Rogers as the provider and Not Telus.

Again I mention that we have been warned about going to some polyphonic sites that ask for the fone number for the site to send a Text message to so that you can get their Ringtone. We have checked at the Rogers site and find the "funky" sounds are not in our age bracket era and have seen better ones at other sites but don't know whether the site is good or whether the fone will accept the polyfonic tone. (as other users have expressed issues with d/l ringtones with this specific fone and Rogers ??? )

It sounds like Rogers simply wants us to use a lame duck unupgradeable fone that now causes us limitations.

I asked if it was Unlocked whether that would help our polyphonic ringtone issue and if it was unlocked whether it would damage our Warranty on the fone with Rogers and I also now don't understand what this could do with our Rogers SIM card that came with the fone ????

Again I am hopeful that experienced users will reply, thankyou for your interest and time. Kind Regards.

Wish I could be more helpful... I frankly do not know what would happen if you unlocked your phone and since you are a long standing Rogers customer, franky, I don't see the need.

Unlocking likely would not make a difference as far as adding ring tones, but hopefully someone in the know will address this.

Our KRZR is much like a mini computer - virus infections may well disable the phone if you download from a dodgy site.

If you got your phone from Rogers unlocked on a cheap plan, then went to Europe with your husband and installed a Euro SIM, which is far cheaper for the service there, then Rogers would loose big time...

KRZR K1M is available at Tellis, and Bell and I know that Bell's phones do not have SIM cards so there is no way to unlock and use with a different provider. The only difference with the 1M is the little digital music player indicators on the front - arrows left and right. But, it costs about $60 more than our model.

Did I mention I bought my phone from Amazon.com and I know that tigerdirect.ca has it available - unlocked.

Good luck with this.

Thx for enlightening this rather noob here. Yes that is what I have been warned about in going to a site and doing a d/l of a ringtone where the fone number is asked for to get a text message confirming the ringtone. I have been looking at mobiles24.com as they have our age bracket of tones, however no one will confirm if this is a legit site or even recommend one for me to look at.

This fone as mentioned, came with depressing sound ringtones compared to our old v551 although the fone as a whole is very good.
I will have to look into the Rogers site a bit more, however the last time I checked it out it was full of funky rap tones...not our era.

The only other problem that I am having that really frustrates both of us is that we are professionals with our work and have the fones blocked so that our cell number is not readable by our clients and this has worked for the past 20 years when we called another colleague or friend that would not take blocked calls all that we had to punch in was *31#and the fone number, but I have now been told that Rogers does not have this feature and so I am unable to call from my fone to a party that does not accept blocked calls. Why this feature was stopped I have no idea.
The better half could speed dial me and the name would be displayed and now all that comes out is "Private Call" and I have to gamble to pick up the fone as when I am at work there are people that do have my number that I really don't want to get into dialogue with at that particular time.

Telus continues with this service, we even have it on our Home phone system with them. I have been getting frustrated with Rogers after all of these years and good features being dropped and the cost of plans higher. We have stuck with them through the years as they have always provided good service, however now major changes seem to be occurring.

Our biggest dilemma really here in British Columbia is that when we go into the interior there are blank spots where the fones simply do not work, however Bell and Telus do.
Rogers reply is that they are working on it.....yep as fast as a snail.

We have often thought about getting a pay as you go fone from Bell or Telus to use for these trips out to those areas, however the cards expire from lack of use and the calls are more costly, so we end up between the devil and the deep blue sea.
Anyone else experiencing these issues and any other feedback on polyfonic ringtone d/l would be appreciated.
I guess I only have this version 4 of Moto tools to d/l pics, an expensive outlay for only that feature.

I look forward to replies from other end users, thankyou for your time.

Posted by: Airman32

Halle, you do have a choice...

1. get a Bell/Tellis PAY AS U GO - only costs $10 - let it expire, then pay $10 - bingo
2. switch to Bell/Tellis - coverage is essential; where I live Rogers has best coverage or I'd switch
3. when one of those calls come that you don't want to enguage - tell em, come on you are in charge here.

I'll take a look at that site and see what I can figure out for you. And remember, we are only talking about 'ring-tones' in the big picture of life, can not even see them.

You have a wonderful day

Halle - I checked out the www.mobiles24.com and believe it is legit - register for their forums and get answers to your many questions. If you bounce over to a Canada only site, go back and click on 'register' and follow...

No one have any suggestions to anything in my recent post #11 ???

I am still hoping to add ringtones and also find a way around the ability to show ones fone number when the party calling does not receive blocked calls. If in an emergency how do I call family who have this call block feature on their fone and home phone?

Why is Rogers doing this to its faithful customers? Isn't Telus only useable in this province and not an International fone, and Fido bought out by Rogers so I don't want to go there.

After all this time with Rogers we are getting really "ticked" with the options available that have changed since we went with Rogers from day 1.
We are now unhappy campers and it seems trapped into either Bell or Telus up here in Vancouver BC and there does not seem to be much difference???

1. Get the program "p2k commander" from the web.
2. make your mp3 ringtones from whatever songs you want (30 seconds or less)
3. connect your Fido KRZR K1 Red to your computer with USB cable.
4. open p2k commander and from the top right roll down menu click a/P2k Phone system.... then open directory a/mobile/audio - there you should see your original ringtones labeled ~AlertFile0??.mp3 etc.
5. rename your personalized clips with original file names. then open the folder containing these mp3's in the left top roll down menu.
6. delete original file.(phone side) (copy them to a back up folder first if you want)
7. replace with your file of the same name. (left side to right side - copy button - bottom right)
8. close program, disconnect phone and restart phone.
9. on the krzr, go to the ringtone you replaced, and it should now show "apply as" in the options.
10. congrats - you have just put your own ringtone on your KRZR for free - repeat as often as you like - thanks for nothing FIDO.
(btw - with this method you could have like 300 of your own ringtones on your phone - just use ~AlertFileXXX as the name of the file where the XXX is a number between 001 and 300...enjoy!)

I've done exactly this, and my custom mp3/ringtone is there in the ringtone list, but will not allow me to set it as my ringtone. Any ideas?

Posted by: Halle

I gather then that we are simply stuck with these less than attractive ringtones compared with our old v551 that this one replaced.
Really annoys me as the Rogers vendor sold me the Moto Tools and said it was "good to go" to d/l ringtones as he himself agreed that the tones leave something to be desired.
All this locked and unlocked fone business is something new to us and never believed polyphonic ring d/l would be such an issue.

With this method, any ringtone you put in the phone will have its "motorola" file name instead of the original name of the file. So, for example, I used a clip of a Radiohead song and called it ~AlertFile221 - it shows up on the motorola as "Zen" - Now, I don't know what the orig. moto. ringtone Zen sounds like, nor do I care, because when I click options on this file, "Apply as" is there and its Radiohead, not some crappy stock file. This should be the same for you- remember, the critical part is the file name. Once the phone sees the right file name, it doesn't have a choice whether to show 'apply as' or not, it just does.

awesome! i will have to try this out when my new phone arrives!

NOT AT ALL DUDE!!! I am former V551 user and I just got this phone... turned all my OLD V551 ringtones into the proper file names of the KRZR as stated above "~AlertFileXXX.mp3" and they all went over to the phone no problem. they have a funny name on the phone, but they all work perfectly for RingerID's and as call ring tones too! I grabbed the lastest p2k I could find and I was able to edit my phone pretty good

Thanks for the awesome guide... if anyone has questions, just PM.

cheers

You're welcome dude---next thing is for someone to write a java app that replaces the really weak and slow Rogers music player with iTunes. That would be sweet if the KRZR could also be an iPod! (with a 32GB micro SD card!!!)

No one here does MP3 d/l music. Our fone is simply a fone. We were wanting to d/l a poyphonic ringtone from a legit site??
Does anyone know about this or now we have to start to d/l mp3's which we are not the least bit interested in nor are the other members of the family.

We are simply not music buffs interested in a plug in the ear to listen to, we have our stereo systems to do that for us in our homes.

Wouldn't even want to start with mp3 stuff on our fone as they are our line of communication no more and no less.
No one here is interested in mp3 players.
I hope some ideas for this non techie music world family.

Thank you.
