Warm, and exhausted, P910i

My venerable P910i which is over two and half years old; has accompanied me all over the place and to the UK on our trips, and which is my address book, my map system (I have a bunch of maps from Visual IT on it), my chess partner, my calendar, my alarm system, my modem, and I dunno what else - oh phone of course, has gone into GetHotQuickMode. For some weeks I have found the battery inexplicably flat! Today I am watching it on the dock as it keeps lighting up as if a call is coming in, and I watch as the battery - despite being on charge - is now less than half full after all night and this morning. The battery icon is doing its "Getting full" thing, so it THINKS it is being charged.

Yesterday I turned off bluetooth, annoying as I use a bluetooth headset, and it seemed to behave normally. Today it is simply discharging even though bluetooth is turned off. I notice that sometimes if I turn it off and remove the battery, then fire it up again, it will behave properly for a day or so; but then it goes nuts again.

It is also warm. Not hot exactly, but warm.

Any suggestions? Is this something that can be identified and repaired? Am I looking at a new phone and, in which case, what should it be? I want to retain my maps so that implies I stay with Symbian, which I would want to do anyway. I want to keep the chess program which is very good, and I just generally like the phone.

Thanks for any help.

Why dont you just buy a new battery?

Because I do not think it is the battery. I had a phone (my wife's) do exactly this last year and we put in a new battery and it made no difference. I have also found out that if I keep Bluetooth OFF, then the battery behaves fine and the rate of depletion is very slow, as when it was new or better maybe. With Bluetooth enabled it SOMETIMES goes into this suckDownTheBattery mode. I will turn on Bluetooth (as I use a Bluetooth headset) and then leave it on and sometimes the battery is just fine at the end of the day. Sometimes, a few hours later, I am being warned that the battery is about to expire. I disable Bluetooth and I can usually get through the rest of the day. It is sporadic, and it is odd!

I am wondering if the phone is hooking into some other Bluetooth device and the battery is being drained that way, I have no idea! At least I can keep the phone now for I like it a lot and I have no wish to learn another. I'd like an iPhone but I will not go with AT&T and I need it unlocked for traveling. Also, there are other problems and features missing - like my chess program!

If I get thoroughly cheesed with turning of and on Bluetooth I may find I need to get a replacement, but it shall be a Sony-Ericsson I think. Maybe.

Thanks for your reply - Lawrence

just because it happened with the other phone, doesn't mean its the exact same thing with this one. why don't you at least get a battery, so to eliminate the possibility. and then if the issue still occurs, get another phone.
