HTC s730 issues on AT&T Network

So my wife dropped her beloved Cingular 2125 in her cup of Diet Pepsi. Off to get a new phone, but since the 3125 wasn't available anymore, her only choice (since she loves the 2125 form factor) was the Panatech Duo. She had researched and the Duo didn't get the best reviews.

So, we took a chance and bought the HTC s730 new from Mobile Planet. She (and I) LOVE the phone, but we're having some significant issues using it on the AT&T network. It makes and receives calls fine, and data works (it actually auto retrieved the settings!), BUT my wife is a HUGE MediaNet user, and no matter what we try, we can't get MediaNet working. We've gone through detailed walkthroughs, such as this one from AT&T's own website: https://cingular.atgnow.com/cng/tutorials/KB82467.html and we've worked with AT&T data support who, while willing to help, obviously wouldn't guarantee any success because it wasn't one of their phones.

Believe it or not, the apparent inability of the s730 to use MediaNet is a BIG problem for her....enough that she may not keep it! Can the s730 access MediaNet? If not, why not (isn't it just settings, or are additional things needed, such as software, etc.)?

Also, we've heard chatter that the s730 does NOT support the 3G frequencies that AT&T uses here in the USA. Is that true? If so, that's significant, but, believe it or not, not as big of an issue for her as MediaNet not working

I can't thank the person (or people) enough that can answers these questions! TIA!!!

The S730 is a 2100 MHz ONLY phone for HSDPA/UTMS (3G). AT&T uses 850 and 1900 MHz for 3G.

I have had an S710 and a Dopod C730, as well as a couple other phones that are unlocked. NONE will access MediaNET and you must have an AT&T branded phone for it to work 90% of the time.

EDIT: This also means no cellular video and mmedia SMS messages may also not work.

Your problem is that your phone is not recognized by MediaNet. You likely need to edit your registry to reflect one of AT&Ts phones. The key you need will be named something similar to "user agent". Find a registry editor, and a valid AT&T model you can solve this problem. I am sorry, but I do not own the phone so I cannot guide you through the registry change, but if you search enough I am sure you can find it.

@Baretta,
You are correct in that the 3G will not work on AT&T which means no video etc., but lack of 3G will not prevent access to MediaNet or MMS messages.

aadadams,

Thanks! Now I know why. I could give a crap about MEdiaNet, but it's nice to know I could get to it if I really wanted to. I'll have to dig around to see if I can find the reg key.

Update us when you sort it out.

Same here. Data works fine, but can't access Medianet "Home" page. Keep us updated.

brianchris,

I posted about the MEdia Net problems in the HTC section:

I also discovered that my S730 does not have an FCC ID on the phone (which should be listed on the label under the battery), on the box or any reference to an FCC approval or ID in the regulatory section of the manual. I'm curious if your phone has an FCC ID on it.
