On ATT how to bypass

i am currently on att have sim from my old phone 3G- put it in iphone can make and recieve calls and text can get on internet via wifi but unable to sync music or contacts or calender without activating - how can i bypass the activation or is there someway to get those items to sync with phone outside of activating since all other features work without the activation? I think i understand that since i am on ATT i don't have to unlock and i would only jailbreak if i want apps on the phone? Please let me know what i need to do and if i am misunderstanding anything.

i have and i guess i am having trouble understanding since some say have to unlock and jailbreak ect ect ect and other people say that since you are on att all you have to do is bypass well i have searched bypass and have come up with nothing other than unlock so please help me understand since i obviously don't or i would not be asking for help.

Well if you are making calls then you obviously have already bypassed activation.

What firmware? 1.1.1? If so then just visit Jailbreakme.com

That will install AppSnap and let you install custom apps.

1.1.2? You need to downgrade. Several ways, follow the stickies, and forgoet the unlocking part.

when i go into settings it says 1.1.1 (3A109a) firmware 04.01.13G
so if i jailbreak then i can install some type of software app that will allow me to sync the phone with contacts and calendar as well as music? Cause when i put it on dock itunes comes up and wants me to activate and i prefer not to. Just wanting to make sure that there is apps out there that is made for syncing without activation! Since you're running 1.1.1, there are several methods/websites, all of which accomplish the same thing. I prefer UnlockThatiPhone.com personally. Very nice walk-thru, will take you about 15 minutes to follow the step-by-step instructions.

When you jailbreak the phone it will bypass activation. iTunes will no longer ask you to activate.

I assume you also need to unlock the phone?

i plan on staying with att i just don't want to have to activate it thru them or add a data plan that i don't want at this time. Since my sim from my Palm treo is working i would guess that i don't need to unlock.

Correct. You only need to unlock it if you want to use a foreign (non-AT&T) SIM, such as T-Mobile, Vodaphone, Orange, et. al.

However 1.1.1 is so easy to unlock, I'd say go ahead and do it. UnlockThatiPhone.com has step-by-step, no PC required instructions that will take you about 15 minutes to do.

after jailbreaking and unlocking if it has to go back to apple do i have to do something to it prior to sending it off?
