Right time to get a iphone

So my dad has had the same cell phone for about eight years, dont ask me how the thing is still going, i have no idea. Anyways he said that he wants a new phone for christmas, and since we are big apple people I want to get him a iphone. I was wondering since Jobs Keynote is mid January do you think I should wait and see if he updates the iphone at all, or should I just take the plunge now? Any advice would be helpful.

Well.. if your dad kept the same phone for eight years... I doubt he would care about the rumored announcement of a 3G iPhone. Get him the current iPhone. It is a great phone.

Jobs MIGHT announce the 3G version of the iPhone in January, but don't expect it to be sold until mid-July at the earliest, IMHO.

I'd say buy it now.
