I have a phone that I want to wipe, they said the only way to do it is through itunes but if I connect it won't it automatically update the firmware?

How do I do a master reset through iTunes without changing any firmware on the phone, I want to unlock this.

No it wont automaticly update, it will sync with the computer. All you do is download the frimware that it yours and once you have it hold shift then click restore and select the fw you downloaded and let it do the rest. Make sure you click shift or else it will get the latest fw and download and restore to that.

Yes, you will need to manually download the appropriate firmware first before doing a shift-Restore.

You should be able to get the firmware you need from the following location (info taken from the wiki):

Firmware 1.0.2 - http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite...28_Restore.ipsw

Firmware 1.1.1 - http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite...9a_Restore.ipsw

Just download it to a folder you can locate later, then go through the process Tito explained (and find and select the firmware you just downloaded).

Hope this helps.

Um, you dont even have to do this through Itunes -- you can reset through the iPhone /Settings/General/Reset/Reset All Settings and/or Erase All Content and Settings

umm I tried it with 1.1.1 and now it's showing the Yellow Constuction triangle with the ! in it.

Can I use ibrickr now to get it out of this mode as per these instructions:

Yea you can use ibrikr. All you do is get ibrikr and run it while in that screen and follow the instructions. I know there is that method that you go to settings and click erase but I think that just delete things and doesn't empty then reinstall a fresh clean fw.

Ok I got version 1.0.2 on there but then when I ran jailbreakme it said I need firmware version 1.1.1 so I went back on itunes and installed that.

Now I have a new problem:

The wi-fi bars are full and I visit jailbreakme.com in safari. I click at the bottom to do the installation, then before the page can finish loading it goes back to the "slide to unlock" screen????????????????????????????????

WTF is going on? I tried this 5 times already.

As soon as it goes back to the Activate iPhone screen, Slide To Unlock and leave it at the Dial Pad for 5 minutes.

...just wait, it will work, but it has to be at the dial pad.
