Screwing around with the jack.

So I've had some modding ideas floating around in the back of my head, many revolving around the iphone's special jack. Lucky me, I happened to come across a broken one, but it's not like many cables I've messed around with. I'm assuming it's for the iPhone, but I guess it could go to any product. There's the copper wire I was expecting, but there's also a red, green, and red-green twisted wire. I'm guessing these correspond to the buds, mic, and possibly something else. Can anyone help me identify which is which?

You do know you can buy an iPhone cable extension for like $3 on eBay, right? I'm all for modding, but not when the fix is cheap and readily available.

C'mon, give me a little more credit than that. You really thought I was trying to splice me a pair of new headphones?

What I planned on doing was splicing this cable and an Xbox 360 headset, so I would be able to talk and hear like normal, but also able to hook up my phone so my buds could hear some tunes.

I made a similar item before with a 3.5mm and headset jack, but I didn't incorporate the working headset idea into it.

I also had another item planned, and since this cable look like both a mic and earbuds, I thought it might work without having to dismantle any other objects. I thought I could splice on a IR transmitter and receiver, so I could take the IR signal from my TV remote to my PC, then take it's electrical signal and convert it into a .wav file and then output it via my phone so I could control my TV. In theory this could work...

So, if anyone can tell me which wires transmit what, that would be awesome.

Touché. Sounds like an ambitious project, I'll be interested to see how it turns out. The wiring diagram has to be out there somewhere, but alas, I have not seen it.

Oh yea those wires inside, I found out that pulling the headphones form under someone is a bad idea, all I did was use superglue and electrical tape to patch it... I hope you show pics. Man I would love those vib duo's

i would bet a cup of coffee that the pinout is:
red right earphone
green left earphone
red/green mic
copper neutral

if the xbox headset just has one earphone, then twist red and green together and connect to the one earphone

It took me a second to process, but I think that could definitely be it. The headphones I previously dismantled were really cheap, I doubt they are even stereo, so that would explain two separate cables in this one. I can't screw around with it until tomorrow, but I'll give it a try and report back. Thanks.
