How to set up PUSH MAIL on the Touch?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: aristottle

Hi Everyone, I am a proud new owner of an HTC TOUCH. I would like to explore the push email capabilities of the touch.

I have never used pushed email before.....I have a HOTMAIL account that I want pushed. What are my options? Will it cost anything extra to have my hotmail pushed to the touch?

Could someone guide me through the process? I am a newbie at this so please be gentle.

Congrats Aristottle,

You may want to try out Windows Live on the phone. It comes pre-installed. When it asks for your windows live ID, use your hotmail address. I recommend that you search and read a few threads here about contacts and Windows Live. You need to decide if you want all of your Windows Live contacts sync'ed into the phone. Make that decision BEFORE you set up Windows Live. You will see numerous pots asking, "Windows Live put all my MSN contacts into my phone. How do I remove them..."

Anyhow, once you decide on that, run Windows Live, use your Hotmail address as your Win Live ID. In Win Live Options, select "As items arrive" in the Sync Schedule screen. That should do it. No fees from Win Live or hotmail for this service. Of course, it uses network data. If you are on the $7 unlimited data, you should be good to go.

can I use a yahoo or a Rogers email account to be "pushed" or does it have to be a Hotmail account.

TIA

I have a few email accounts. I have them all forwarded to the hotmail account. Then it is pushed to the phone. The only downside is that at present, Win Live does not support alternate "from" addresses. Any emails you send will show as from the hotmail account.

I have my Rogers and Yahoo accounts forwarded to my gmail account. Gmail archives all my mail (and filters out 99% of the junkmail) and forwards the first 140 characters or so of each email to my sms address:

1234567890@txt.aliant.net

in real time and it is free to receive regular sms with Bell!

If something is important and larger than a regular sms message I use the browser and read it from gmail.

Find out what your phone email address it and try it out.

doesn't the pre-installed windows live on the touch have the ability for push for @hotmail.com accounts? I have a ppc phone with mobile 6 and all I had to do was goto sync schedule and change it to "as item arrives" and "always". I tested it out several times e-mailing to my hotmail account from different ones and it was on my phone within seconds of sending.

Yes, it does...

Well I now have push email on my touch. I used the windows live program that comes with the touch. However.....some emails come right away....others take longer, or arrive when a second or third email is sent. It is almost like the connection doesn't always last long enough when my phone pings the server? Anyone else experiencing this?

Posted by: aristottle

From what I am observing, only about 60% of my emails are being pushed? Any suggestions. I am not using outlook for my hotmail.....would that make a difference?

I've been experiencing the same problem.

To me, it seems most likely a server problem on the Live/Hotmail network.

I say this because if I send myself a message that doesn't get 'pushed' to my Touch, I go to Messaging and do a manual Send/Receive on my Live account it still does not get the message (even though it actually is in my inbox if I login from my computer).

Yeah shifty...that is EXACTLY what I have observed through trial and error....I was wondering if I had configured some improperly....?

I wonder if MS is going to fix this "issue"?

I hope they will... but given the fact that it's a FREE service, I don't know how fast they would get to it.

Also.... I want to find out a way to report the issue to them. They may not be aware of it at all.

what about using IMAP with gmail, has anyone tried it...does it work for push email?

You can set up Gmail with IMAP through the messaging client. It will not be Push, though. You can set send/receive intervals.

There is a known issue with Gmail and IMAP on WM6 right now where only the header shows and the message body doesn't....

There is also an issue with Gmail and POP3 on WM6 where messages that are read dissapear from your inbox....

So basically.... Gmail needs to get their stuff straight.

Well Shifty, I played around windows live push hotmail all day....and about 70% of the time...the email would get pushed....however, a few times it wouldn't......if I checked from my desktop, or used internet explorer from my touch and went into my hotmail account....the email would be sitting there.

Sometimes, if a second email got pushed to me, it would kick out the first one that I never recieved and both would get pushed through to the touch.

So it is a bit of a drag, and is far from perfect in its present state, however...at any time I can log on to internet explorer and go into my hotmail account to check to see if I have missed anything.

Still, it would nice if the push email worked properly!!!!!

Thanks for the link, I actually already stumbled on that thread myself and it's got some interesting info. It seems to me, though, that they are experiencing a slightly different problem.

Luckily, I have no major issues with Live Messenger and do not sync my contacts with my Live account (just use it for email & IM).

I'm going to try the latest version 10.6.0033.0600 and see if that resolves the 'Push' email issue. Although I still believe this is a server-side problem.

I'll report back in a day or two

Thanks Shifty, I will keep an eye on this thread and see if you figure out anything. I only use windows live for email as well.

Actually... I don't even need a couple of days to test this.

I installed the latest Windows Live client, and it seems like it's got a few minor changes here and there but nothing significant.

The same problem persisted with the new version as well. I uninstalled it after an hour of testing. The original version works just the same and takes up a little less resources.

This makes me conclude that this is most likely a problem on the Live/Hotmail server side. It's also possibly a WM6 issue, but then the problem would most likely be more consistent.

I don't think there is anything we can do at this point but wait and hope Microsoft addresses the issue. I've logged a ticket with them tonight on the issue and gave them as much detail as possible. I will post any progress when they get back to me, if they do at all.

This is really discouraging. It's one of the main features on the phone I was looking forward to having. How often is this happening? Are you getting email pushed to the phone at all?

I've also read some posts aobut people noticing that their contacts are offline with mobile MSN messenger when they are truly online. Are you seeing this as well?

would something like this work for gmail on the touch?
http://services.mail2web.com/Default.asp

i dont have the touch yet otherwise i would have tested this
good luck and let me know if it works
thanks!

Well today went better.....100% of my emails got pushed....I did notice that a couple arrived after they hit my desktop. But push email is really neat.....I woke up this morning and there were 7 emails already loaded on my Touch waiting for me. Then today I was out and about and my touch would beep to tell me that I had email......it actually is REALLY handy!!!!!

I did recieve one piece of spam from Motorolla 4 times in a row...that was weird.

I do get MOST of my emails pushed instantly. The issue comes up randomly.

As far as MSN goes, I've had no problems with it at all... works pretty well, actually!

Posted by: aristottle

I don't use MSN, sorry can't get any advice on how it works.

Wirelessly posted (HTC Touch: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6) HTC-6900)

So I've been in contact with Microsoft technical support...
I described the issue to them in great detail and gave examples and scenarios.
I got a reply with some potential causes and fixes to try. I was told to keep my mailbox from being too full (not an issue), sign out and in Live Services (not solution as this repeats after resets as well), and contacting Bell and HTC for software updates.

I replied back explaining that this issue occurs with other devices and versions as reported on a few forums and explained the problem again in even more detail.
I got an almost identical cookie-cutter response telling me to contact HTC for software updates.

I don't think they even write the responses themselves, they probably just select one from a database.

A little disappointed .

I just got a touch and I'm loving it. For those who don't want to use Hotmail/MSN but have Sympatico.. you can use your sympatico e-mail for push e-mail. I just tried it and it works flawlessly.

I'd much rather have a xxxxxxx@sympatico.ca e-mail address than xxxxxxx@hotmail.com

There's a program called PushEffect that triggers a Send/Receive as the result of a text message being forwarded from your mail server. It's not TRUE push but effectively works similarly.

1) Mail is received at mail server.
2) A forwarder sends a message to ##########@txt.bell.ca
3) PushEffect sees the message and looks for a pre-configured leading character such as [
4) PPC initiates a Send/Receive and new message is received in your PPC inbox.

It works very, very well.
