Converted Vidoe files to MP4, itunes will not accept them

I converted a movie and music video in avi to mp4 but itunes won't accept it an thus I can't get it on my iphone.
I used Winx Media avi to ipod converter. The program has two options:
1. IPOD VIDEO- MPEG4&AAC...
2. IPOD VIDEO- H264&AAC
I tried both, what gives
