So I got my iPhone the 2nd or 3rd day it came out and decided not to upgrade to ANY of the firmware upgrades.

Now I am wanting to upgrade to 1.1.1, does anyone know how I would go about this?

So many of the threads are about DOWNGRADING, well I'm just trying to UPGRADE from the original 1.0 to 1.1.1.

Basically you need to get your hands on 1.1.1 firmware -- then specifically update to that using iTunes and holding ctrl/option while clicking update.

If you want to then jailbreak, jailbreakme.com is the place to go.

If you want to then unlock, you can then use installer to deploy an unlocker like anySIM or IPSF (which you need a license for).

I'm not trying to fully unlock the phone. I'm actually an AT&T customer. I've downloaded the firmware, and when I go into iTunes and hit ctrl/option, it asks me to select a file. What is the extension to upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1.1?

I'm also running 1.0. I'm thinking about upgrading to 1.1. I mean is it worth it? Not interested in unlocking just jailbreaking. I know this sounds noobish but does anyone have a guide outlining how to update to 1.1? Like the op said, all I see isthreads about downgrading or upgrading to 1.2. Thanks!!

Download the firmware file, and then hold down the control/option key while clicking update and select the firmware file you just downloaded. Then go to jailbreakme.com, install oktoprep, upgrade to 1.1.2, and run the jailbreak software. You will then have a jailbroken 1.1.2 phone. There is no reason to be running 1.0.0. There is a reason they came with the updates, it is not to make things worse. Especially if you are legit AT&T customers you have nothing to lose!
