Gwalt, you do need to do a search. I will help you with what to search for.
Downgrading firmware to 1.0.2.
Viriginizing baseband.
Upgrading to unlocked/activated 1.1.2.
It is very easy, do what the posts above said and search. There are so many threads on how to do all this it is ridiculous. It is also very easy, just look around.
