hardware upgrade: HTC Touch and Rogers

hey everyone,

so im planning on upgrading to an HTC Touch with my current plan (or a better deal if possible), and after speaking with a Rogers CSR today it seems that i can get the HTC Touch for a 3 yr contract at 349.99 (before $50 rebate).

im not too familiar with pros and cons to these scenarios/things, so if you can offer up any advice pls do.

so far i dont see a problem with it....BUT i would definitly want a cheaper/better deal if possible.

on a side note, i actually spoke with 2 Roger's CSR's and on both occassions they seemed very slow and not too familiar with their own services or products.

for example: one CSR told me the HTC Tytn is older then the HTC Touch...and then another told me the exact opposite.

Thanks in Advance

The Rogers web site advertise $199 for a HTC Touch (w 3yr contract).

Since you are going for a 3 yr plan, there is no reason why you can't get a better deal.

hey Wingz thanks for the quick reply..

i believe i mentioned that to the Rogers CSR (because i saw an flyer advertising the same deal) BUT she said, the deal is for NEW Rogers Customers...those without a current plan or deal with Rogers.

that didnt make sense to me, because shouldnt CURRENT customers be given better or atleast the SAME deals as new customers???!!

the CSR rambled on some jibberish and seemed to be in a bad mood, so i didnt want to inquire anymore and just told her 'thanks'.

another question:

if i do NOT get data plan with Rogers but rather just stick with my Voice plan.....i can still use WiFi to surf the net, check emails, use Windows Live for free right???

(provided im in a WiFi accessible area)

Ummm.. if you don't mind porting your phone number over to Telus or Bell, and if the Rogers cancellation fee isn't too high, you can get the Touch for free on a 3 year contract. They also have the data plan on a short time special ($7 at Bell and $15 at Telus for unlimited web browsing but no tethering). If you talk with the CSRs at Telus and Bell they will try to match your current Rogers voice plan. Check the Telus and Bell forums for more details. The main difference between the Rogers/Fido and the Tell/Bell models are that the CDMA models may have a faster processor but no Wi-Fi.

thanks grouchy...

forgive my lack of knowledge, but whats 'tethering'?

well one of the main reasons i want this phone is b/c it 'seems' decently priced and its a WiFi capable phone..

i havnt been able to find too many WiFi phones.

which takes me back to my last question: "if i do NOT get data plan with Rogers but rather just stick with my Voice plan.....i can still use WiFi to surf the net, check emails, use Windows Live for free right???"

im not sure if im posting in the correct forums and whatnot..so i apologize in advance.

thanks again.

the rogers $199.99 price is for both new and current customers with a 3-year term, as long as you choose to add a unlimited data plan, which is $15 for unlimited surfing. this $15 plan is only available with Blackberry Pearl and HTC touch.

Tethering means using the Touch as a high speed modem to connect to your laptop or computer. If you aren't getting a data plan through Rogers, you definitely don't want to tether your Touch. There was an article last week in all of the major Canadian newspapers about a guy that tethered his Bell data device (probably a HTC Touch) to his computer and incurred $85,000 in data charges. He had unlimited web browsing but tethering to a laptop wasn't included.

You can use the wifi and surf for free even without a data plan.

FYI, the touch that is offered with bell/telus is actually an update to the touch offered by rogers. Faster cpu. And the data plan offered by bell is awesome. I would definitely take that into consideration. My only reservation with a touch screen-only phone is the lack of tactile feedback which makes blind typing impossible(typing without looking at the handset). If you are no longer under contract with rogers, port the number, go to bell. I would, but they don't have the handset that I really want.

It's not an update, technically it's a different phone, the Touch GSM's update was going from 64/128MB RAM/ROM to 128/256MB

Think about how much you want to use the internet (email, maps, weather) and then decide about gsm wifi(rogers)/cdma no wifi. Wifi will be free, but you will have to be able to find a signal, unlimited internet will work almost anywhere.

leak73 is correct that you can use wifi to surf and do email, however, I would check into that unlimited data plan Bell is offering. My understanding is that it is only good for wap sites. Therefore, if you want to surf regular websites or use a differnt browser like Opera, you may be out of luck.

thanks for the advice guys....really appreciate it.

btw, i figure the other forum i posted in is not frequented as much...so i'll just ask here as well:

basically ive decided on either the HTC TyTn (first one) or HTC Touch with Rogers (both with rogers)...

anyway i plan on text messaging, windows live, and surfing the net mostly through its WiFi availability.

can u tell me which one you would choose based on that?

thank you

The Tytn is the more powerful device. More memory, 3G speeds, faster processor, full keyboard. The touch makes many sacrifices to be more smaller. Although Touch has WM porfessional it is much closer to smartphone where the Tytn is almost a full blown PDA. Your choice is power vs. size.

Posted by: orangeapple

interesting...

didnt know those differences....well other then the size factor...

hopefully i can get a good deal with the TyTn from Rogers.

also, i saw a few threads on the TyTn and a common problem it has with over-heating???? and low battery life????

are these problems still common with the TyTn?

Posted by: orangeapple

and just out of curiousity...

is the TyTn 2 much better overall then the TyTn 1????

either way, i wont be get the TyTn 2 because Rogers does not have them yet....and i dont feel like spending $750 + for a TyTn 2.

im with rogers and got my HTC Touch for $99. I use the wifi alot, and i have a 10mb data plan with 3 months unlimited. Im sure rogers will come out with a decently priced data plan sometime in the near future.

if i ever wanted to have more data i would get the 1GB for $65 and i could use it to tether all i want with no restricitons.

You can use other browsers, it includes everything except tethering or just using mass amounts of bandwidth that they'll notice. You can use opera
