Hi, i just got my HTC touch and a big selling point was the fact that i can use GPS. i have a data plan to make it free but i just cant figure out how to use the feature. Do i have to download google maps? or some other application? i also heard of people using a external gps receiver, does that mean the touch does not have one built into the phone?

Any help would be very appreciated. Thank You.

The Touch does not have an internal gps. Dl Google maps. Make sure u have a data plan that is pretty big if you intend to use gps nav alot.

I've got an unlocked touch I use with tmobile, had it some time befre sprint started selling them. Data plan is very good.
I bought a gsat bluetooth gps off craigslist fr 30 bucks, runs awesome with the touch on google maps and yahoo maps on yahoo go.

i also have an unlocked gsm touch... i am using it with a freedom mini gps puck and it works flawlessly with google maps (and unlimited data, of course!)

I never thought I'd say it, but try it with yahoo go!...
I founf the GPS works a little nicer with it.
Anybody know of any other software that can be installed?
Maybe some talking software?

Once you have a BT GPS, you can also purchase navigation software like Tom Tom, iGuidance, CoPilot, OnCourse Navigator etc. Once you buy it, it's yours and you can install it on your memory card and there are no charges for data usage. Oh, and the plum is voice guidance....."turn left onto Jones Avenue in 500 feet".

so i have a bt holux gps receiver, and have tomtom navigator ( i had installed on my palm), how do i install on the touch, i don't have need for massive amounts of maps, just ontario/new york state, will a 512 sd card work for this, thx for any ideas. anne:-)

The Palm version of Tom Tom is not transferrable I believe. Check the manual that came with the CDs.

I have a Mogul and I've been using the Garmin Mobile XT with it. It works perfectly with the Mogul.

Hi goldenircle,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I think that you are out of luck with TomTom. First of all, Palm and the Touch use two different operating systems. It's like trying to install Mac software on a PC - it ain't happening. Your Palm TomTom software is written in a way that it can't be read by your Touch.

Secondly, I have TomTom on my Touch and there is no option for just downloading Ontario and New York State maps. Yet get all of North America, but this map is 922MB. If you are in the GTA, you could go to CanadaComputers and get a 1GB card for about $20.

Depending on your service provider, you may want to look at Google Maps. Otherwise, I've seen a couple of other companies that advertise maps for Windows Mobile 5/6, which is what you'll need for your Touch.

THat sucks, I was just about to order the TomTom software for my Touch when I saw this thread. Are you 100% sure the TT Software won't work with Touch?

I was the winner of the Visiontac GPS. I just received the product yesterday and hope to test it out by this weekend. I'll let you know how it works with the Touch (enhanced version).

Hi all,
thx for the ongoing ideas, i was looking at the delorme street atlas, it looks as if it will work with mobile software 2003, so not sure if it will work with windows mobile 6! i think that tomtom 6 will work with both palm and windows mobile. It is hard to give up on palm tx, it is a great pda and i think i will just have to put it in drawer and force myself to sell my soul to microsoft. looking at some of the prices of gps units, it is hard to justify spending all the money tomtom wants! anne:-)

The Windows Mobile/Pocket PC version of Tomtom works with the Touch. I'm running TomTom 6 now as we speak. Goldencirlce has the Palm version and that won't run on the Touch. TomTom is good, but you may want to talk to people that have it or at least check to see if the maps for your area are up-to-date. I know that my house shows up as an open field on TomTom 6. In Google Maps they have an old set of municiple maps and I'm living on a street that doesn't exist, which is weird because they overlay this over the correct satellite image.

If Delorme works on 2003, it should work on the Touch. I ran TomTom 6 on my PPC 2003 ipaq h2210 and I'm running it on my WM6 HTC Touch. Windows Mobile 5/6 (the PPC version, not SmartPhone) are the successors to PocketPC 2003.
