Seeking GPS Software Recommendations

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I am asking for advice regarding GPS software to be used on the AT&T Tilt.

I was hoping to use CoPilot 7 but it crashed every time I tried to enter a destination from my Outlook Contacts.

Garmin Mobile XT sent me the wrong way, through Boston instead of around, from Worcester, MA to Marblehead, MA.

On Course Navigator 6 doesn’t navigate to Contacts but to POI’s.

I tested those first because they had trial periods.

The next two, iGuidence4 and TomTom6, do not.

What have been your experiences with iGuidence4 and/or TomTom6 in the manner in which they integrate Outlook Contacts with route planning?

Thanks for your advice.

tomtom6 will allow you to navigate to an address in your outlook.

tom tom's the only thing I haven't tried, and so far I've been most impressed with iGuidance by iNav. It's similar in appearance and function to co-pilot (except that I haven't had any trouble with it on my tilt, 8125, or pc.)

edit:
unfortunately iGuidance gives me an error when I try to load an address from contacts.

Thank you for the replies to this thread.

Just for giggles I tried CoPilot Live 6 on my Tilt, what could it hurt?

It works great!

The maps are slightly out of date, i.e. the big dig in Boston, but I can still use it while waiting for ALK to "fix" version 7 to work with contacts on the Tilt.

Apparently the error in iGuidance was due to a missing file (strabbr.bin) on the first release of 4.0 that has since been corrected. Anyone else who gets the bad or missing strabbr.bin error can find the file here: strabbr.bin

TomTom is the way to go. I've used a couple others all with less success.

I've used TomTom on my old Nokia N80, as well as on my friend's old iPaq phone (Windows Mobile).

I haven't used it on my Nokia N95, as it does not support the internal GPS chipset (which is horrible anyways), and I haven't tried it on my HTC Touch either since I sold my bluetooth GPS receiver with my Nokia N80... however .... I'm waiting on a new Holux m1200 to arrive so I can play with.

I'm 100% confident it will work fine and I'm definitely sticking to TomTom when I get my new GPS receiver.

Doesn't the Tilt (Titan, Mogul, P4000) come with a built-in GPS? I just needs to be unlocked right?

Wirelessly posted (HTC-8900/1.2 Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6))

i'm surprised no one's mentioned Google Maps...for free, it's got a good feature set and recognizes the Tilt's built-in GPS out of the box.

yea but google maps doesnt give spoken directions it is real good though as well as windows live gps thing ive used telenav as well and it was alright right now im in the process of putting tomtom on my tilt will report back on how it is

I have been testing a couple of GPS apps, and have not been impressed with google maps for navigating as it doesn't seem to reliably update position.

I have also tested smart2go and it is not worth buying. The interface is a little strange, the voice prompt mispronounces kilometre, the rerouting is insane, the maps are all dynamic so a good cell connection and an unlimited data plan are needed, once the license expires you cannot navigate at all, customer service is unresponsive to my questions..... all in all not a good thing.

I hope someone can tell me something about TomTom 6. Is there text to speech?

i just installed tomtom6 on my tilt last week, it works perfectly, connects to sats in 15-30secs everytime i start the program. voice directions are easy to understand and the celebrity voices keep you entertained on longer trips. one thing i've noticed, they didn't do a great job integrating the phone features.

i've never tried navigating to a contact so i can't comment on it, but i'll try it out tomorrow.

what is text to speech?

Posted by: LightAges

Text to speech is when the GPS pronounces the name of the streets. Instead of "turn right at next intersection", the GPS(software) will say "turn right at Main Street"

Well, I'm a little confused by this... you don't like Garmin because it sent you through Boston to get to Marblehead from Worcester? The best route from Worcester to Marblehead is straight out 90 to 1A-N. It happens to run straight through Boston. How can you decide you don't like Garmin based on it doing what it's supposed to do?

Not that I care too much, but you sound like my grandfather who hates his Magellan because it tells him that there is a better route to get where he's going than the route he's been going for 50 years.

Hi there - I know this SHOULD work (because there are countless people on this & other forums who've actually accomplished it already...) but I can't seem to get this working yet - my device isn't recognized. I can't even figure out how/where/at which point to enter in the product code.

Help me out someone - I'm totally frustrated & about ready to dropkick the phone, my laptop, and anything else remotely nearby!

thanks.

cheers! ~kj

True. If you don't like going through boston you can calculate another route at the touch of one button and im sure that the next route calculated would not go through boston... but may take a bit longer.

need to know how to unlock gps on my htc p4000.

i use route66 on my smartphone. works great so far, pretty excited to have gps on my phone.

Garmin Mobile XT works great on Windows Mobile. Installed it on my MIO P550 and it's way better than Miomaps.

Wish my HTC P4000 had a working GPS so I could use it there instead.

AT&T Navigation. $10.00 a month.

Current maps. Traffic updates, etc.

Unless you're looking for a long term solution you may be better off choosing a software package instead of a subscription but over a 12 month span you'll wind up getting a bit more for your money and spend less with AT&T Navigation, and who really knows how long you'll be using a WM device?

Don't know if you have selected a program yet but I have been using the Garmin Mobil XT with the BT receiver for my Motorola Q and love it. In fact, I recently purchased a Blackberry Curve but will be switching to the HTC Touch because I can't install the Garmin software on the Curve. The Blackberry Service is only Subscription because Blackberry can't run the program from the card.

Anyway, back to the GPS software. I use it extensively for work entering multiple address and via points almost daily. It will sort the via points for me and determine my best route. Granted it doesn't always know fastest vs shortest. This is a setting and the fastest will always go with as many highways as possible not always taking into account traffic or the expedience of less congestion. None of them are very good at that. I have a Tom Tom as well for my wife's dash and frequently will compare the routing and the Garmin wins every time. It is right on with estimated time of arrival and always seems to pick a better route. The only thing missing in the XT software is the audible street names which would be nice sometimes. The other problem I run into is that if I'm on the phone, it doesn't alert me to a turn audibly in any way but again, same problem with any phone based program. Google maps and MS live are both good free programs but don't provide the turn correction or flexibilty that Garmin does. For relatively short money its a big winner.

By the way, Worcester to Marblehead could go either way depending upon time. Sometimes the Pike is a nice straight shot. 128 and 495 can both take forever.

Hope this helps. I spent a lot of time agonizing over GPS software.
