HTC Touch clean up.

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I just got the HTC Touch and am trying to uninstall the software on it that I will never use. But I can't do it from the phone or Windows Mobile Device Center. They only show the stuff I have recently installed, not the stuff that's already on the phone.

There has to be some way to get into the phone to rid it of all the bloat.

First, I just wanna say that if anyone knows how to unistall default programs clean PLEASE postup the info. As far as I can tell there is no quick & painless uninsaller program for mobile windows sadly...so you need to resort to ripping other stuff from the OS to free up memory.

With that being said..

Not to sure about the touch, but I just got the s640 and in principle, it should be the same.

Managed to tear off and save about 5MB from bootup, but be carefull when doing things... like windows a lot of stuff is linked to something else..

I googled around and found registry hacks for the other win mobile devices, palms etc... about 95% of them are fine for nearly any model of phone that is running Win mobile 5 or 6. So just a matter of applying them to your phone.

BACKUP backup backup ! before you do anything!

(Im posting from work atm.. I'll toss up all my links in this soon as I get home for you all)

In general first thing you'll need is a registry editor for win mobi devices. get one that runs from your pc desktop and detects the phone via the activesync. they are by far the best IMO.

A quick get started site and a good chunk of the hacks is here -> http://wiki.xda-developers.com/inde...M5_Tweaks_Other

the cache hacks, change storage placements etc wll all have a felt effect when playing around with things after (remember to reboot!)

As for uninstalling directly, I did happen across a upgraded version of the task manager (installs over default version .cab file installer) that not only showed the running process, but dll and startup things too.

From there you would in theory only need to find the value in the registry and rip it out to prevent loading.(I just just got my phone so have not gotten around to that atm.. but I ill actually be doing this in a few days to try and get the most free mem possible) The key values are not that hard to locate once youknow what programs are running on the phone.

I came across a few more, but those will have to wait until i get home as I said b4..

All in all there were a few complaints about the s640 being suggish and a ram hog.. I agree if you left it factory set... I literally was booting up to only have 12-14mb of avail ram to multitask... I did about 9-10 hacks so far (most regisrty ones) and now I have 21MB of ram for multitasking.

Thats a good start for me! phone is crazy fast now :P

I promise the links will be on the way soon I might jus go and write up a wole hack thread as a one stop shop to help everyone... should apply to most wm phones anyways

Thanks for the link. There are some good hacks there. But if you ever find out how to remove things like IE and WMP let me know!!!

Why would u wanna get rid of wmp and ie?? To install other proggies that use less resources? Just curious.

I recently got the touch (sprint) and am about to start overclockin, cleaning it up and doin some customization. Lookin forward to the info that will b provided, thanks t3xboar.

I wouldnt recommend overclocking your phone. there is a very high chance you'll blow the chip. its not the same as PC cpu's. these are very touchy.

Aside from that, removing ie/wmp is personal coice really. If i could i would rip out wmp. I havea divx player that does the job better with less bloat. IE on the phone is more than fine IM. but again personal pref.

Bit over loaded at work atm, I will be posting up a guide tho, it did wonders and nobody shold have a factory set phone... so hang tight

Thats interesting. A lot of people say that overclocking to 286 is fine on the phone. Do you think overclocking even to this speed would b detrimental to the cpu integrity? I'm tryin to figure stuff out to make this thing a little bit faster, cause honestly its a bit slow and buggy. All this and I haven't really even started to do anything interesting on the phone. All I do now is talk, text and check my email and it still gets quite slow and in need of a reboot more often than I would like.

mines overclocked to 260 for 1 1/2 weeks with no problems.. i had it running at 286 for a week and it seemed fine, but i figured it may be pushing it and i want my phone to last. Its alot better at 260, definatly noticible compared to running at 200.

its a windows based machine. it feels sluggy due to windows - not being underpowered.

As long as you understand that, then you'll be ok. (hell if linux can run on scrappy pc's that windows cant even install onto, it does show that its non-hrdware related in the end)

In the end the qualcom 400mhz chips ar quite fast. its actually technically faster than the nintend DS chips, and they are sed to play games with 3d... granted not the same type.. but you undersand what im trying to say

If you overclock (please write up a nice doc in the hack section or link us to a good overclocking page btw) it is the same with PC cpu's for speed etc.. you will feel a difference when using the machine, thats a given. but there are big drawbacks. For pc's its more forgiving, but for cell phones its less forgiving... blowing 500 dollar phone..not cool...

****
A quick technical cpu run by:

-> PC based cpu's are rated via testing. lets say they wanna make 2.4Ghz cpu. they physically fabricate it, then test at that speed.

-> if it passes, they slap a sticker on saying 2.4Ghz, box and done. finishes there.

-> if it fails that speed test, then they try for 2.2Ghz... then 2.0... etc etc until it passes one. Tey then print out a sticker and slap it on, done.

That is wh for pc's some versions of cpu's like the old P4 prescott and the new dual core 4400e's you can crank the hell out ot them and be a happy camper.

At home here I have a 4400e chip that is running at 4.9Ghz (its rated for about 2.4Ghz)

They failed most tests for some reason until it for to the 2.4 range and got that sticker. but if you fiddle you can bring it to a beast of a cpu for a fraction of the cost (like in my case. paid 100 bucks vs buying a 5.0Ghz one t 1.2 grand...)

Now cell phone cpu's are not tested in the same fashion. they are standardised in the end. must pass "x" tests and rated all the same. done deal. no up down tests. just a flat line.

*****

So overclocking a cell cpu is a huge risk de to no flux (the chip was made from the start to cap out at that speed... not made higher and just failed the tests to get a lower speed sticker.) remember overclocking instantly adds heat to your cpu... and we dont have heatsinks in our cell phones... not like desktop pc's.

Thats why you *might* get some speed bosts, but I wouldn't bother persnally. its more of an issue of being bogged down by bloat winblows garbage on startup than being an "underpowered" machine.

anyways.. overclocking is only good in the case of gaming etc..where the muscle of the cpu is lackig.. 3d rendering, etc etc... multitasking tbh doesnt really hit up the cpu a lot, more memory to save it in "sleep" state... it will gobble only 1-2 cpu cycles to keep dormant till you tab t it again in email/txt/web etc cases. Hence why I prefer bloat hacks rather than cpu overclocking. especially on a cell phone

Still all that being said, if you have a link or instructions, post it up. I can rea and see along with everyone else =)

edited for spelling: stupid keyboard keeps missing letters laff

IE and WMP take up alot of resources and are feature poor compared to Opera mini and TCPMP. Those are the programs I use so why have my device store programs i'm not going to use?

I have my Touch overclocked to 221Mhz. A little boost but I don't worry about frying it.
